2. Empire, which is the name of the magazine, is
the first thing that catches the eye of the buyer,
it’s red on black with a perfect contrast of colors
so we already now from a first sight, what we
are going to buy
The Title of the movie has a completely
readable size, and the color scheme fits
with any color of the dominant image, the
title doesn’t cover any important feature of
the image, we can clearly see Tony’s face,
his gun, his wounded arm, his clothes and
his blood.
The main front cover is occupied by the iconic
Al Pacino’s Tony Montana play, and it also has
the text “Scarface” on it, the purpose of this
dominant image is to inform the buyers on what
this edition is going to be about, and to
persuade every fan of the movie.
To recognize and be persuaded by the movie,
the buyer needs to know the name of the movie
and read it on the front cover and need to
know who the main character is, who’s picture is
shown on the foreground.
In a print magazine, the barcode
needs to be on the front or on the
back page of it, this would help to
be scanned more quickly.
In this case it’s on the front, without
going over any important bits of
the images
The background leads the color scheme of the whole front
page, even if the background it’s cropped, and Tony’s
image doesn’t perfectly fit in for a stylistic choice, the
orange-red color lets the text boxes to follow the same
pattern of it. The golden texts it’s readable on any color of
the dominant image, and the quote of the movie in white,
relates with Tony’s white shirt.
The main features of the dominant
image are a lot of blood and the gun in
Tony’s hand, this could give an idea of
what the movie features, also because
it’s a frame from one of the most
important scenes of it..
Empire always had a range of audience of
15 years or older people, but in this case
the target seems a few years older, this
because Scarface has an age rating of a
minimum of 18 years old, for the violence,
the drug abuse and the strong language.
The purpose of this magazines is to entertain
an audience who has an interest in cinema, in
this case, an interest in 80s classics, to inform
and persuade people who never watched a
movie, to watch it or to give them enough
information so they can understand if they’re
interested in it or not, giving them reviews
about mainstream movies.

3. PRINT MAGAZINE
The Screenshots of the ambient and
the Tony Montana’s logo create this
gangster mood, this because the logo
has this black and silver color and
shape which reminds of some flag and
family coats from other gangster
movies like The Godfather which also
stars Al Pacino
The dominant image, is the original
poster of the movie, readapted with
the black and white colors of the first
official poster of the movie.
The website, the sponsors and the “out now” text are in the
least visible spot of the page, this because the reader will not
pay much attention at this minor details but will focus more on
the informative and persuasive language.
The Screenshots from the official videogame show the
buyer how the game is set and produced, and it also
shows and links to what the genre the game will be,
which is violent and with bad language like the movie is.
The title of the videogame has the same font used for
the movie title, the only difference now is that, the text
“The World Is Yours” which also is a quote from the
movie, is linked to the original logo of the movie.
The same quote used in the front page is
repeated here again, but only this time is red on
black, which are the colors of the original movie
poster, and this time the quote has the font of the
movie too.
The purpose of the use of the persuasive
language in this catchphrase, is to attract
any gamer to buy the game and play
Tony Montana’s character, just to feel how
it is to be a drug and mafia lord, trying
to impersonate and pretend to have the
money and the power that the character
had in the movie.
The major use of the red color also
emphasizes the blood and violence of
shown in both movie and video game,
and it also links to the colors of the
posters and covers of the DVDs and
the marketing elements.
All this icons inform on which I the minimum age to play the game and
which are all the available platforms you can play the game on. This helps
any possible buyer to check if he has on of the listed console if he wants to
buy the game.
4. The Masthead is the name of the magazine, which is
usually on the centre top of the page, like most of
the name of magazines, it’s masked/covered by the
leading characters of the dominant image.
The tagline goes with the logo
of the name of the magazine,
which specifies what kind of
magazine it is, so it helps the
reader of what he will read
about once he’s going to buy it.
The Skyline on the name of
the magazine promotes the
three ore hyped and waited
movies that are going to be
released on the same period
but they’re just not hyped as
Terminator is.
The main sell line is TERMINATOR
DARK FATE, this because when the
magazine came out, Terminator
was the biggest franchise that was
getting a sequel in that period,
especially because of James
Cameron who came back at the
production. The colours are the
same black and red used for all
the other texts, and I doesn’t cover
the faces and the guns of the
actors.
This is some fan-service, because they used some
dialogue-language to recall the most famous line
from the first movie, reused in the 2nd
, the 4th
, and
the 5th
, which is “I’ll be back”, and it’s said again by
Linda Hamilton in this chapter, who returns as Sarah
Connor as the first two Cameron’s Terminators.
There is a little line of circles which
separates the two tittles PAUL
BETTANY and Jodie Whittaker
The target audience of the magazine has
always been 18-34 years old, this because
they’re the only one interested in cinema, who
want to expand their knowledge using the web,
because of the generation they belong to.
The background show explosions, dust and smoke,
this because the movie is going to be an action
genre movie, so we will see a lot of action
sequences with guns and explosions, and it also
has this post-apocalyptic mood because the
Terminator movies have this Judgment day
feature in every chapter of the franchise.
This sub-quotes from the actors, in this
case Linda Hamilton and Arnold
Schwarzenegger, who are the two
leading faces of the dominant image,
talk about their experience doing the
movie, and are extracted by the
interview they did for the magazine
and this attracts the reader to buy the
magazine and read their interview.
DIGITAL MAGAZINE
In the same period, more movies are
getting released or have news/rumours
about, but they are not as important as the
ones in the main sell line or the skyline, but
they have a little text box in a secondary
space of the page.
5. The number of the page
doesn’t exactly help you to
know how many pages you
already read, especially on
a digital magazine, but
being a movie magazine, it
says under the number the
name of the movie that the
article is about.
The main headline of the double page
spread has the repetition of the word
“something” which remains in the reader
mind, at it also has a black color, which is
readable on the light background, and it
also has the same italic font that the
movie’s logo has.
The article is written in columns and
paragraphs, with a simple font to keep the
text clear and tidy, giving smoothness and
making the reader comfortable with being
informed about the movie, and letting him
reading in tranquility some keys details that
he won’t find in the selling lines, the headings,
etc…
The text has a cap drop which shows the reader
where to read from also the font is set to 11
usually and pretty much all the time magazines
use areal font but this could change over time.
The Background it’s just a simple land
scape, which is blurred to give the two
main element the main focus both in the
photo and in the reader’s eye, the sky
has a similar colour of the car, while the
ground is al autumnal but with some light
colours.
The colour scheme is perfect, this because you can clearly see every
element in he shot.
The Aston Martin has a complete detachment from the background
even if its colour it’s similar to the sky’s colour.
And James Bond is the only element to wear dark colours, which is
completely different from all the light colours in the rest of the shot.
The Leading character of the
dominant image is James Bond,
this because his attitude permits
him to has so much room in the
double page spread, which is
nearly one page occupied just
from him
The Aston Martin has nearly half of a page
of space, this because the brand of the car
has accompanied the 007 franchise forever,
this is why the car needs so much importance
in the dominant image
The purpose of the magazine is to entertain, informing
and talking about rumors in the cinema industry, and to
make the reader enjoy some fun facts and interview
about the cast and crew of certain movies.
Genre : Film Magazine
Subheading, in this case is
just an introduction to the
article, and the purpose
of it, is to guide the
reader to ask himself if
he’s going to enjoy the
reading or not.

7. TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
PRINT
You should follow a standard A4 layout, once you printed,
you can’t go back if you made a mistake, but you’ve got to
print all over again the right version
People read from left to right and from up to down, so you
must put your main lines and slogans on the left and on the
top if you want to eye catch the audience.
Printing will cut off everything you put out the bleed line, so
you have to check if everything you want to be in the page
is in the border and if it has at least 5mm of distance from
it to be sure.
Make sure your color scene is fully filled with an RGB scale
colors, this because most of the printers use this kind of
standard structure for all their print outs.
DIGITAL
You don’t have to follow any specific layout but using a
clear layout will help you to organize better your work.
On a computer, or any kind of other screen, people don’t
tend much on have a linear reading path, so try to eye
catch as much as you can the reader on your main articles.
You don’t have any bleed line, but you must optimize your
website for any kind of device, because different screen
have different website reading, so you have to shrink it for
smaller displays if you don’t want to your website to be cut
off.
Most of the websites use a CMYK color scale, so try to
make sure that every element you put in, it’s filled in this
structure.
