Film magazine analysis
1. Film magazine analysis
analyse three film magazine covers preferably with an image from a similar
film on the cover. Important to analyse genre, narrative, representation,
audience and language used. Annotate cover.
James Kinnear
2. The main image is of the two characters
standing one behind the other to give the
cover depth. The female character is looking
at the reader which instantly engages the
reader and our male character is looking
away giving another addition of depth to the
cover. The female is standing with crossed
arms and facing straight towards the target
audience, this shows that she is a stronger
character and enforces that she is our main
character. They are also standing in front of
a city backdrop which obviously shows
where the film is set.
The text is basic in colour at white for the film title, yellow for the magazine title and black
for the subtitles. The title entertainment is covered up by the film magazine image, this is
because the title is obviously well known and therefore attracts attention not only to the
main image but to he title behind it. Again it gives the magazine depth with the
“entertainment” behind and the “Divergent” in front of the image. The text for
entertainment is bold with very little letter spacing. Divergent is the very opposite to the
entertainment title with bigger letter spacing and thinner letters over all, it makes the film
look more sci fi, futuristic and modern.
From the magazine cover we can see the genre
which from the main image and from the title I
can suggest that is probably a Sci-Fi, this s
because it is pure white with thin letters and big
line spacing. It makes it look futuristic and slick
therefore leading me to think that it is in fact a
Sci Fi film. I also think from the main image that
it cold be a romance film because the two
characters are standing very close to each other.
They could be standing in any position on the
cover but they are standing just in front of each
other. Finally I think that it will be a thriller as
well because of the clothes they are wearing. If
it was just a romance they would be in normal
clothes but because she is wearing cargo
trouser with what appears to be knifes in them I
think there will be some thriller elements in it.
Audience and language. The audience of this
magazine and film will be roughly the same.
It is a young adult film aimed at both
genders if based off what I think the genres
are. The language is also very basic and an
easy read, therefore I feel that it is also
based at a young adult that is looking for an
easy read that informs them about the film.
3. The main image is of our main character and
world famous actor Matt Damon. He Appears
worried and scared. He also is filthy in dirt and
dressed in some sort of Exo suit holding a gun.
He looks ready to go to war again because
after the look of him he has already been to
war. The background is dark and impossible to
work out where he is. His eye contact is away
from the target audience/reader showing
there is something off the image to be scared
of hence his reaction. It has represented him
as a soldier who is fighting alone because he is
the only one on the front cover.
The titles on the magazine cover are all again similar colour schemes with total film in
black and white, as well as the Film Title Elysium in white. Matt Damon is also in yellow
bringing attention to his name in hopes it will sell the film more and the magazine. The
title Elysium is in the same font and bold appearances as total film but Elysium has much
more letter spacing compared to total film. Matt Damon covers the main title again like
the last magazine, this is probably because the title is in the background and allows the
main image to have depth and get the readers attention. Elysium is in front of the main
image again adding to the depth of the cover but also to make sure it is in the readers
attention
From the magazine cover we can see the
genre is most probably Sci Fi again because of
he futuristic suit he is wearing, he wouldn't be
wearing that if it wasn’t Sci Fi. Because of the
gun he is holding it says to me that the genre is
most probably action adventure as well
because props like that are usually involved.
Audience and language. The audience of this
film and magazine is likely to be middle aged
adults and potentially young adults mostly of
the male gender. The reader of this magazine
however is likely to be fairly similar but slightly
older than the target audience of the film. This
is because the older adults will be more likely
to read this magazine than the younger adults.
The language is slightly more complex as it is
based for adult reading and gives reviews on
films but it wont be too complex or too simple
as it is a well known film magazine and has to
appeal to a large audience.
4. The main image is of our main character
standing in a desert landscape making eye
contact with the reader or target audience. He is
dressed in brown with a coat and cargo trousers
on. He appears to be holding some sort of a
weapon and a crowd or something is following
him in the background. He appears to be in a
desert background with a cloudy dark skyline
suggesting that a storm is coming.
The titles on this magazine are very bold with very little line spacing. “Mad Max” is a
very basic font in pure white with the words “Fury Road” in black in a smaller font size
underneath. It is just under the E of Empire and is onto f the black skyline which makes
the white very visible and easy to read. The colour scheme of the writing seems to be
red, black and white. With the Red colours being most important, white writing being
the second most important things for the reader to read on the magazine cover. The
Title of Empire is behind the head of Tom Hardy as the main character needs to have
his face shown engaging eye contact with the reader.
Audience and language. The audiences of
this film and magazine will likely be young
adults from the age of 18-26. This is because
the film itself Is roughly aimed at this age
bracket but also because the Mad Max series
has a lot of fans from the older films they will
be attracted to reading this Empire
magazine. The language on the magazine
cover will be basic but inside the language ill
potentially be more complex because the
people reading the empire magazine are
most likely to be older and therefore will
have a more complex vocab.
From this magazine cover we can see that the
genre will be action and adventure and even
potentially sci- fi. We can see this from the
clothes that Tom Hardy is wearing a jacket, cargo
trousers this shows that he is probably travelling
or on some sort of adventure. The reason I have
said Sci-FI is because t looks somewhat based in
the future or maybe not even on earth at all.
