◦ Set of eight gongs made of bronze,
on a wooden stand in the shape of
a Sarimanok
◦ The eight small gongs differ in pitch
◦ To indicate the dimensions of the
whole set, the length of the
Sarimanok-shaped stand is 2.60 mtr,
from head to tail.

◦ The agung is a large, heavy,
wide-rimmed gong shaped like
a kettle gong
◦ The agung produces a bass
sound in the kulintang orchestra
and weighs between 13 and 16
pounds

◦ A native xylophone in Sulu, a
bamboo keyboard on top,
constructed out of wood.
◦ Ordinarily, its main body is shaped
like a coffin; keys are struck with 2
mallets, each with a strip of rubber
fastened to its underside.

◦ A 2-string plucked lute instrument made of
wood which resembles and elongated guitar.
◦ It varies in sizes
◦ It is performed just like a typical guitar.
◦ Eight frets originally held in place, placed on
the neck of the lute by a sticky rubbery
substance
◦ The tail is carved to represent a stylised
crocodile head.

◦ Is made mainly of “tamiang” bamboo, a long, thin-walled
bamboo tube. The mouthpiece of the suling is circled with a
thin band made of rattan near small hole
◦Sulings can have either 4 holes or 6 holes
◦There are two factors that affect a fine suling's tone:
1. Fingering position.
◦ The fingering position changes the wavelength of sound
resonance inside the suling's body
2. Speed of the airflow blown by the mouth.
◦ The airflow speed also can modify the tone's frequency

demonstrate the parts and how it is being used
Membranophone Improvise The group will devise a musical instrument and will
showcase their work to the class
Idiophone Perform The group will be given an instrument, their task is to
prepare a performance using the instrument

  • 21. 1. K U l i N t a n G ◦ Set of eight gongs made of bronze, on a wooden stand in the shape of a Sarimanok ◦ The eight small gongs differ in pitch ◦ To indicate the dimensions of the whole set, the length of the Sarimanok-shaped stand is 2.60 mtr, from head to tail.
  • 22. 2. A G U N G ◦ The agung is a large, heavy, wide-rimmed gong shaped like a kettle gong ◦ The agung produces a bass sound in the kulintang orchestra and weighs between 13 and 16 pounds
  • 23. 3. g A b b a n g ◦ A native xylophone in Sulu, a bamboo keyboard on top, constructed out of wood. ◦ Ordinarily, its main body is shaped like a coffin; keys are struck with 2 mallets, each with a strip of rubber fastened to its underside.

K U d y A p I ◦ A 2-string plucked lute instrument made of wood which resembles and elongated guitar. ◦ It varies in sizes ◦ It is performed just like a typical guitar. ◦ Eight frets originally held in place, placed on the neck of the lute by a sticky rubbery substance ◦ The tail is carved to represent a stylised crocodile head.

The mouthpiece of the suling is circled with a thin band made of rattan near small hole ◦Sulings can have either 4 holes or 6 holes ◦There are two factors that affect a fine suling's tone: 1. Fingering position. ◦ The fingering position changes the wavelength of sound resonance inside the suling's body 2. Speed of the airflow blown by the mouth. ◦ The airflow speed also can modify the tone's frequency
