significant influence in the development of
instrumental music in the Philippines. They
introduced various instruments that facilitate
performances, festivities, and other
entertainment in our country. This culminated in
the creation of various musical groups, bands,
and ensembles. The musical instruments are
classified into five categories using the
HornBöstel-Sachs system:

Idiophones – produce a
sound by the vibration of the
actual instrument itself. This
includes the instruments that
are part of the idiophone
classification. Examples of
these instruments include
the cymbals, xylophone,
marimba, vibraphone,
glockenspiel, triangle,
tambourine, gong, chimes,
castanets and bells. These
idiophone instruments of the
orchestra are more commonly
known as percussions.

Aerophones – produces
its sound by the vibration of
air. Aerophones
are instruments that create
noise by pushing vibrating
columns of air through
them. ... In non-free
aerophones, the vibrating air
is confined inside of the
instrument (eg. ocarinas and
bagpipes). Most instruments
traditionally referred to as
woodwind instruments are
non-free aerophones.

produce sound by
the vibrating of
strings. String
instruments, or
chordophones are
musical instruments
that produce sound
from vibrating
strings when a
performer plays or
sounds the strings in
some manner.

produce sound when a

Membranophones
are instruments that
produce sound by
vibrating a membrane.
The Hornbostel-Sachs system
divides membranophones
into five categories: struck
membranophones, plucked
membranophones, friction
membranophones, singing
membranophones, and other
membranophones.

is a Philippine National Treasure,
the Bamboo Organ can be found in
St. Joseph’s Church Las Piñas City. It
is made of 902 bamboo pipes.

is a Filipino marching band that uses
woodwind instruments that are made
of bamboo.

popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the
Philippines”, is an orchestra that plays music using
non-traditional bamboo instruments.

ANGKLUNG ENSEMBLE
is a small group of musicians who plays angklung bamboo
instruments. The angklung instrument is made of bamboo-rattle tubes
attached to bamboo frames. Angklung is an Indonesian musical
instrument consisting of two to four bamboo tubes suspended
in a bamboo frame, bound with rattan cords.
