I came from agencies, where even the worst client you have internal support. It was exhausting – just 5 people. There were internal politics, stresses.
We’d joke about bad clients – “$100/minute,” dinner out.
But I loved it. We were always there for each other.
I’ve been taught to dream big. I was ready to move on from small agency life, so when the opportunity came to try out Fidelity, a company of 40,000, I jumped at it.
First day: lots of security. Very adult. Very grown up.
Interview discussion – lots of problems to solve!
I imagined it would just be huge responsibility, huge workload, but also fascinating and we would laugh together and joke together and work our butts off together – a bigger version of agency life. Instead…
I ended up in Office Space. How did this happen? I had 7 managers.
“we all come on for 6 months. I’ve been here 2 years. They don’t treat you like crap.”
NOT A RINGING ENDORSEMENT!!
We spent hours in meetings, doing nothing. Talking about nothing.
I would look at a problem, unsure where to start with it. And when I brought it up in a meeting, people said…
That’s not my job. We don’t have time for that, or budget for that. We were told to focus on this other thing instead. But it’s all interrelated (I said)! But it’s not my job, they said.
Here’s the problem with “not my job.” When we say something isn’t our job, what we’re saying is that we can’t take ownership of it. We aren’t responsible for it.
Fear is dangerous. It separates us from the things we care about. It isolates us, makes us less human. Fear is what makes us yell at one another, snap at a stranger for bumping into us, or honk at another car cutting us off.
Jon Colman spoke at Confab last year, and he touched on the danger of fear. We can’t let fear overtake us.
He also reminded us that we can overcome it.

I fell into the trap of fear. Fear of giving up.
Some kids had to work really hard in school. For me it was easy. I met my teachers early because my mom knew them. I read easily, I loved learning.
But that meant I never learned to study. So when I got frustrated, as an 18yr old, I turned into a toddler. I threw tantrums, rather than step away from problems or admit I needed help.
But I never gave up.
Years of TKD
More recently, years of Doctor Who – something always comes along, if you just keep plugging away.
Heads down, pushing ahead is not the way to go.
Being demoralized but “not giving up” is useless.

Stop trying to fix it, and just step out of your own way.
It almost doesn’t matter what you do – you just need to get away from the stress of the moment, and the problem that is causing the rut
