Mark Gillow (Learning Designer) will describe how ICTE-UQ has entered the eLearning space, and the lessons we have learned from undertaking projects including the IELTSx MOOC, with over 500,000 participants, online English support for university students and scenario-based online courses.

2. Why did ICTE employ a learning designer?
• Conceptualize a learning experience then develop it
• Create / write / develop course outcomes, text-based materials,
multimedia resources, interactive exercises, assessment tasks etc
• Advocate for learners – divide material in learner sized chunks
• Ensure good consistent design throughout

3. Working with SME’s
• Important to establish your own ‘street
cred’ – they are subject matter experts but
you are an expert as well
• Listen, Understand, Imagine, Make,
Check
• Never say ‘never’ – I always say ‘no
problem’ then figure out how to make it
later
• SME’s need to be quarantined from other
duties (ideal)
• Accept when your creative urges need to
be scaled back

4. Project Management
• Resist the urge to jump right in and start
building
• Follow design process – ADDIE or AGILE
• Documentation is not the enemy
• AM’s, LD’s and SME’s have three different but
complementary roles

5. Part of the team
• Visit their classroom
• Attend PD presentations
• Work together to improve learning outcomes
• Build for teachers
• Choose correct tool (software) for the job
• Share your knowledge & build capacity
• Always give credit to the entire team
