Exercise: Analyzing Diversity Commitment On Web Sites
Purpose
The purpose of this exercise is to analyze the way that
organizations communicate their understanding of
and commitment to diversity through their Web sites.
Guidelines
Note: For this exercise to be done in-class, computer access is
necessary.
1. With the entire group, describe the purpose of an
organization’s Web site. Why do people typically
visit an organization’s Web site? How important is it for an
organization to have a comprehensive yet
easily accessible Web site? Explain.
2. Divide participants into groups of about five people. Have
each group choose five to ten
organizations’ Web sites to examine. Groups may choose Web
sites representing organizations that
interest them, or they may choose any of the organizations
listed in DiversityInc’s Top 50 Companies
for Diversity; for example:
• American Express Co. (http://www.americanexpress.com)
• Cisco (http://www.cisco.com)
• Coca-Cola Co. (http://www.coca-cola.com)
• Ernst & Young (http://www.ey.com)
• Ford Motor Co. (http://www.ford.com)
• Johnson & Johnson (http://www.jnj.com/connect)
• Marriott International (http://marriott/com)
• MGM Mirage (http://www.mgmmirage.com)
• PepsiCo (http://pepsico.com)

3. As you examine each organization’s Web site, answer the
following questions:
• Is material on diversity or a link to a diversity section found
on the Web site’s homepage?
• Is the organization’s definition of diversity and its diversity
mission statement clearly articulated
on the Web site? Is it easy to locate?
• After reading the main diversity section, do you clearly
understand the company’s stance on
diversity?
• Is there a statement on the Web site by the CEO reflecting the
organization’s commitment to
diversity?
• Does the Web site material address diversity-related issues
such as employee-resource groups,
recruiting strategies, diversity training, supplier diversity,
community relations, and so on?
•
Analyzing Diversity Recruiting Materials
Today many organizations make available a tremendous amount
of information on their websites to support their recruiting
efforts. Go to the websites of two of the Top 50 Companies for
Diversity (see DiversityInc.com). Then select two companies
from the Fortune500 who are in the top 50 companies for
diversity (see
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500).
Go to their websites. Examine the degree to which each
organization promotes its commitment to diversity using the
questions listed under number 3 on page 297 of the Canas &
Sondak (2014) textbook to guide your analysis. Describe the
strengths and weaknesses of each organization's website in
terms of their representations and communications about their
diversity commitment.
In a two to three page paper, compare and contrast the two Top
50 Diversity companies with the two Fortune 500 companies.
Describe your analysis, key findings, and your conclusions.
Utilize at least one of the readings on recruiting in your paper.

Examine the degree to which each organization promotes its commitment to diversity using the questions listed under number 3 on page 297 of the Canas & Sondak (2014) textbook to guide your analysis. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of each organization's website in terms of their representations and communications about their diversity commitment. In a two to three page paper, compare and contrast the two Top 50 Diversity companies with the two Fortune 500 companies. Describe your analysis, key findings, and your conclusions.
