Since we don’t have a seminar tonight and I won’t have an opportunity to “discuss” the paper with you, I wanted to provide you with some early guidance, so you will have ample time to ask questions, if needed.
Based on feedback from students last term, I have added my personal notes to the standard rubric. In addition, I have created an “assignment guide” – somewhat like a template. Each contain essentially the same information but in different formats.
My goal is for each of you to do exceedingly well on these papers! My recommendation is that you get started on the introduction ASAP – this will allow you time to write a great goal to maximize organizational performance through leadership. Next, locate the research and other sources you desire to use and “map” them to the various sections of the paper. The way this is organized, you should be able to write about the various topics independently … or a little each day. Allow time for the research portion to “soak in” and then you will be ready for the analysis followed by your recommendation.

Unit 2 - Assignment 1: Focus Paper
Write a seven to nine (7–9) page paper (2000–2500 words), not including the title and reference pages, explaining the leadership necessary to accomplish business goals and maximize organizational performance that includes the following:
· Introduction to specific business and organizational performance goals you desire to achieve through leadership.
· Discussion of the behaviors, skills, and attitudes necessary for effective leadership.
· Research on charismatic, transformational, contingency, and situational leadership.
· Selection of two of the researched leadership theories and analysis of the ability of those leadership styles and approaches to accomplish the goals as stated in the introduction. Be sure to connect the research to the analysis.
· Based on the analysis, provide a recommendation for the leadership style most appropriate for achieving the business and organizational performance goals identified in the introduction. Connecting the research to the recommendations will make them stronger.
· Conclusion should summarize the primary points of the paper and bring forward a call to action.
The Assignment will be evaluated using the Unit 2 Assignment Grading Rubric. Therefore, please ensure it is written with proper grammar, in APA format (including clear section headings), and includes a minimum of four cited and referenced resources—at least two of which must be peer reviewed (scholarly) journal articles.
The overall point distribution for the Assignment will be as follows:
· 50% (75 points): Content, focus, use of research, and organization
· 30% (45 points): Analysis and critical thinking

Case Study 2: Going Global: What Does it Take to Make Cross-cultural Teams Successful? will serve as the central organizing influence of your Portfolio. The case describes issues, problems, and challenges related to developing high-performing cross-cultural teams in an organization integrating new employees after an acquisition. The Portfolio’s overarching goal is to convince the client to hire you as an organizational change consultant. Portions of the Portfolio will reflect your actual work, management, and learning experience, when it exists. It will be important to set some broad guidelines and ground rules as well as highlighting the dissertation structure that your supervisors would like their students to adhere to. Suffice to say these issues have already been highlighted and discussed with you in detail in your PRISM unit.
In summary, when you start working on your dissertation and develop your thinking and findings a bit more, you may wish to have a chat with your supervisor; a call or Skype or using some other online tool. Also a good idea to send your supervisor your chapters as you complete them so that they can provide their comments as you make progress on other chapters. However please consult your supervisor if he/she wishes to consider an alternative approach.
There is a document called Assessment Guidelines on this Moodle site that gives a very brief outline of the suggested chapters involved in your dissertation and an idea of the number of words that are usually expected in each chapter.
In the meantime, as far as your dissertation structure is concerned, let us just remind you that as a general rule, we would suggest the following chapters and sections for your thesis.
-Title: A clear, concise statement of the topic.
-Abstract: The abstract is a summary of the whole dissertation. It presents all the major elements of your work in a highly condensed form. Maximum of 500 words.
- Contents page: clearly describing chapters and any sub-sections and related page numbers.
- Acknowledgement- Chapter 1 - Introduction: You need to set the scene for your dissertation, tell a story by providing some background to the importance of your chosen subject. You should also make your aims and objectives of the report very clear, by for example providing half a dozen bullets clearly describing what you have in mind and what you wish to explore. You should clearly state your "Research Question (s)" and state why your research is important, what is the research gap, how it contributes to the body of knowledge and potentially it’s significance to the practitioner’s world, and, what benefit will be achieved in carrying out your chosen piece of work.
- Chapter 2 - Literature Survey (LR): This is a very important part of your dissertation (particularly if you only rely on acquiring secondary data and body of knowledge). The aim will be for you to provide robust and credible literature relating to the subject matter. Use of some models/frameworks is encouraged. You will also get a better mark by providing a sound critic in your LR, i.e. what you agree with and what you don't, and, the reasons behind your argument/rationale.

The final project for this course is a leadership case study analysis. You will be given a specific case study that centers on leadership strategies to form the

Case Study 2: Going Global: What Does it Take to Make Cross-cultural Teams Successful? will serve as the central organizing influence of your Portfolio. The case describes issues, problems, and challenges related to developing high-performing cross-cultural teams in an organization integrating new employees after an acquisition. The Portfolio’s overarching goal is to convince the client to hire you as an organizational change consultant. Portions of the Portfolio will reflect your actual work, management, and learning experience, when it exists. It will be important to set some broad guidelines and ground rules as well as highlighting the dissertation structure that your supervisors would like their students to adhere to. Suffice to say these issues have already been highlighted and discussed with you in detail in your PRISM unit.
In summary, when you start working on your dissertation and develop your thinking and findings a bit more, you may wish to have a chat with your supervisor; a call or Skype or using some other online tool. Also a good idea to send your supervisor your chapters as you complete them so that they can provide their comments as you make progress on other chapters. However please consult your supervisor if he/she wishes to consider an alternative approach.
There is a document called Assessment Guidelines on this Moodle site that gives a very brief outline of the suggested chapters involved in your dissertation and an idea of the number of words that are usually expected in each chapter.
In the meantime, as far as your dissertation structure is concerned, let us just remind you that as a general rule, we would suggest the following chapters and sections for your thesis.
-Title: A clear, concise statement of the topic.
-Abstract: The abstract is a summary of the whole dissertation. It presents all the major elements of your work in a highly condensed form. Maximum of 500 words.
- Contents page: clearly describing chapters and any sub-sections and related page numbers.
- Acknowledgement- Chapter 1 - Introduction: You need to set the scene for your dissertation, tell a story by providing some background to the importance of your chosen subject. You should also make your aims and objectives of the report very clear, by for example providing half a dozen bullets clearly describing what you have in mind and what you wish to explore. You should clearly state your "Research Question (s)" and state why your research is important, what is the research gap, how it contributes to the body of knowledge and potentially it’s significance to the practitioner’s world, and, what benefit will be achieved in carrying out your chosen piece of work.
- Chapter 2 - Literature Survey (LR): This is a very important part of your dissertation (particularly if you only rely on acquiring secondary data and body of knowledge). The aim will be for you to provide robust and credible literature relating to the subject matter. Use of some models/frameworks is encouraged. You will also get a better mark by providing a sound critic in your LR, i.e. what you agree with and what you don't, and, the reasons behind your argument/rationale.
- Chapter 3 - Research Methodology: Here you should describe the methodology used in gathering the data and information. In this chapter, Collins begins the process of identifying and further developing from the research those unique factors and variables that differentiated the good and great companies. One of the most significant differences, he asserts, is the quality and nature of leadership in the firm. Collins initially told the research team to downplay the role of top executives in the good-to-great process. It became obvious that there was something different that these leaders did. Collins went on to identify "Level 5 leadership" as a common characteristic of the great companies assessed in the study. By further studying the behaviors and attitudes of so-called Level 5 leaders, Collins found that many of those classified in this group displayed an unusual mix of intense determination and profound humility. Characteristics used to describe these leaders included words like quiet, humble, modest, gracious, and understated. Yet there was also the stoic resolve and an unwavering determination evident. They were low-key executives, rarely appearing in the media, who demonstrated a relentless drive for results. These leaders often had a long-term personal sense of investment in the company and its success, often cultivated through a career-spanning climb up the company’s ranks. The personal ego and individual financial gain were not as important as the long-term benefit of the team and the company. As such, Collins warned of the liability involved in employing a bigger-than-life charismatic leader —personalities often brought in from outside the company or organization by a board seeking a high profile figure. The data suggested that a celebrity CEO brought in to turn around a flailing firm was usually not conducive to fostering the transition from
Good to Great
(Collins, 2001).
Why is this important?
Collins was asked and did not want to use "servant leader" for the Level 5 leader (Lichtenwalner, 2012). The team chose the term, “Level 5 Leadership” over Servant Leadership, in part, for fear readers would misinterpret the concept as “servitude” or “weakness.” In his mind, this position looked like something else. And so a new leadership phrase was born. What is interesting is that many but not all of the leaders profiled had a faith background. Lichtenwalner, (2012) in his research suggests that Servant Leadership is a key aspect of Level 5 Leadership. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
