• w. Singular countable nouns: something mentioned for the first time (I
saw a man last night. One man, unknown up to that point in time, to me.)
• A job or a profession (She is a surgeon.)
• Expressions related to time, frequency, speed and price per amount
(We have classes five times a week.// He was driving 60 miles an hour.//
Apples are 90 dinars a kilo.)
• Expressions with have (Let’s have a look around, shall we?)
4. More specific use of the definite article the
• Reference to something that has been mentioned before (The man looked confused.)
• Reference to something that both the speaker and the listeners know (The classroom
is big and spacious.)
• Something that is unique or one of a kind (The Sun sets in the west.)
• W. Nouns theatre, cinema and radio
• W. Morning, afternoon and evening (but not with noon, midnight, dawn and dusk)
• W. Musical instruments when we want to say that someone is playing them (She plays
the piano well.)
5. More specific use of the definite article the
• W. The superlative form of adjectives (She is the most beautiful girl in our
school.)
• W. Ordinal numbers (My brother scored the second goal for his team.)
• W. Some countries (if there is a common noun in the name or the name itself is in plural
form: the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom)
• W. Mountain ranges (the Alps// the Himalayas), rivers (the Nisava, the Danube),
seas (the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Sea), oceans (the Pacific Ocean), islands in
archipelago (the Bahamas), deserts (the Sahara)
• W. The names of cinemas, theatres, museums, galleries, hotels
6. Zero article
• General things (Children are inexperienced. // I love music. )
• W. Buildings and places if you work or live there (We have a lot to study at
school. // He was sent to prison for killing 2 people. // They graduated from
university in 2002.)
• W. Expressions for/ at/ to breakfast, lunch, dinner (but We had a delicious lunch at the
weekend); by car/ bus/ plane/ train; on foot; hand in hand, face to face, side by side
• W. The names of continents, countries (there are some exceptions to this rule),
cities (the Hague is the exception to this rule), lakes, single islands and mountains
(Corfu, Kopaonik...)
