The document discusses using a questionnaire created with Survey Monkey to gather opinions for a documentary. The questionnaire asked about gender and preferred documentary genres. The results showed that interviews and voiceovers were most popular documentary conventions. Peer feedback on drafts was also valuable, helping to improve designs and ensure the final product met audience needs. Focus groups and interviews could provide additional perspectives beyond what a questionnaire captures alone.
1. When carrying out the research for my documentary I wanted a wide variety of other peoples opinions so I created a
questionnaire by using Survey Monkey. I wanted to see what types of documentaries people would be interested in seeing. The
results from the questionnaire would enable me to gain and collect a range of results, which then would enabled me to have a
documentary suited towards audience preference.
The first question I asked was what their gender was, I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t gender biased. I did this because I
wanted it to be a fair survey and it also would allow me to get differing results based on what men prefer and what women
prefer.
Following from that question, I asked the audience to select some different documentary genres that they would like to see on
TV, with a list of different genres I wanted them to tick at 1 genre that they preferred. Collecting these set of results based on
this question was really beneficial because then I could make a decision what genre my documentary would be based on
audiences preference.
When it came to asking the audience what codes and conventions they would want to see in a documentary, it was clear to say
that the majority said interviews and voiceovers, I took this data into account when producing my own documentary making sure
there were lots of interviews to give that variety and different opinions about school life.
2. Advantages Disadvantages
Provides accurate amounts of data for analysis If everyone answers are the same, there are very limited
answers
A broad variety of data can be collected Some people may be confused by the questions given and
might give a dishonest answer
Easier to administer Some participants may be uncomfortable with answering the
questions
It is accessible via phone, e-mail, online Some participants may not be able to expand on their
answers
Made anonymous which would mean more honest answers
3. Different Data Collection Advantages Disadvantages
Questionnaire • A questionnaire is easily distributed
• A questionnaire is easy to evaluate
• Contains both open and closed
questions
• Fake answers leads to inaccurate data
• Some of the data may be too similar to
get a different variety of data
Interviews • The interviewee id by themselves so
they are more likely to be more honest
• You can get a proper understanding of
the type of audience you are observing
• Some people might complaining that the
interview is time consuming
• Interviewee may feel uncomfortable
being asked questions
Focus Groups • Can have a good conversation about the
subjects and also receive different
opinions that would prove to be useful
• Dominant characters may have a greater
influence on others
• Not everyone gets to express their own
opinions
Peer Feedback • People who are working on the same
project can offer useful tips and help
• Encourages student involvement
• Someone may pressure someone else
• Someone may have false answers
4. When I was constructing my ancillary task I made a lot of drafts to help me decide what design would look best and would grab
the most attention.
Peer feedback was important for my drafts as it could help me to see which design worked the best and what didn’t work. The
feedback given from my peers was beneficial because it gave me feedback based on what I needed to do to improve. For peer
feedback, I decided to receive opinions from students in my class. I did this by printing my designs and told them to write down
areas which they didn’t like, what didn’t look appealing and what I needed changing. Overall I felt this was really useful as the
advice given to me about making improvements to my products allowed me to have an effective product for all tasks.
However, I did feel that feedback from my documentary was the most significant because this was the main product that I was
producing and editing, with the documentary feedback my class watched what I had made so far and then they gave feedback
based on improvements. The advice given was very useful because it enabled me to overall produce a product suited again for
audience needs.
