ELECTRIC VEHICLE(EV) and its major Parts
Electric Vehicles
• Electric cars use stored chemical energy in
battery, though they release it
electrochemically, without any kind of
combustion
• There's no burning of fuel, no air pollution
from the tailpipe, and no emissions of any
kind are produced as ICE . They are
generally called BEV(Battery Electric Vehicle)
or PEV (Plug in Electric Vehicle)
• Hybrid Cars: Many of the electric cars on
the road today are actually hybrids that

Why EV ?
• The Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI) is a multi-
government policy forum established in 2009
under the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM)
• The EVI engaged private stakeholders in
roundtables in Paris in 2010, in Stuttgart in 2012
and at COP21 in 2015
• The EV30@30 campaign, launched at the Eighth
Clean Energy Ministerial in 2017, set the
collective goal for all EVI members of a 30%
market share for EV in all vehicles by 2030.
• India , although a late comer has planned all
fossil fuels to be replaced by EV in 2030 : a vision
of NITI Aayog , GoI thinktank
Why EV ? Advantage of EV
• Electric Vehicles (EVs) are almost five times
more energy efficient as compared to ICE
vehicles,
• Use only 25 to 30 moving parts as opposed to
over 2000 moving parts in an ICE vehicle,
amounting to far greater reliability
• And with the battery prices falling, the EVs
will have their capital costs (for vehicles
without range anxiety) equal to the ICE
vehicles with their operational costs about a
fifth of that of ICE vehicles
Global Scenario of EV
• Norway with 29% market share is the most
successful deployment of electric cars in terms
of market share, globally. It is followed by the
Netherlands
• With a 6.4% electric car market share, and
Sweden with 3.4%. China, France and the UK all
have electric car market shares close to1.5%
• China was is largest electric
car market, accounts more than 40% of the
electric cars sold in the world and more than
double the amount sold in the United States

designs and charging modes have been
developed & deployed throughout the world
• Some of the major charging standards
followed
around the world are described below:
MODES: The charging mode refers to power
levels that charger and its connectors are rated

Charging Stations and Type
• EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), is
backbone of EVs and has potential of business
and employment opportunities
Charger Type and Standards
• The type and power levels for the charging
standards determine the cost of charging
stations. Charging station standards may be
selected in a manner to enable
interoperability (charging of different makes
of vehicles) so that third-party service
providers can set up charging stations catering
Charging Stations and Type
• IEC committee has defined IEC 62196-2 types
socket outlets.
• Both 3 ,4 wheelers, and buses can primarily use the
DC EVSEs, depending on the EV OEM preferences,
based on the battery chemistry.
• Four different standards for DCFCs in practice :
• CHAdeMO: Japan set up the CHAdeMO association
(Charge de Move) in 2010. CHAdeMO charging
station can only be used for cars with a matching
CHAdeMO inlet
• The CHAdeMO is typically rated for 125 A and 500 V
DC, which translates to 62.5 kW, even allow the
peak power charging upwards of 125 kW
Charging Stations and Type
Combined Charging System (CCS)
•The Combined Charging System (CCS) or
Combo was developed by the Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) for EVs with DC
charging requirements. CCS-supported EVSE can
only be used for cars with a matching CCS inlet.
There are two versions of the CCS connector:
•(1)The U.S. version combines the Type 1 Yazaki
AC design with the additional DC pins, and (2)
The European version combines the DC pins
with the Type 2 Mennekes AC design.
Charging Stations and Type
• Type 1 is available for sale rated up to 200 A and 600
V on the DC lines, which translates to 120 kW peak
power at best. European Type 2 seems much more
capable with 200 A and 850 V, which in theory gives
170 kW peak power.
• GB/T is a Chinese standard (20234), which can run
up to 250 A and 750 V, which means that it is
actually the most powerful DC fast-charger in the
world with
187.5 kW capacity

EV CHARGER STANDARDS IN INDIA
• Automobile Industry Standards (AIS)0138
was prepared by the Automotive Research
Association of India (ARAI) in 2016. This
covers charger standards for both AC (Part
1) and DC(Part2)
• BIS, the national standards body has
constituted a technical Committee (ETD-
51) which is presently preparing standards
for EVSEs for India.

Government of India Policies to Promote e-mobility
National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 :
➢GoI launched NEMMP 2020 with targetof min

million sales every year .
➢With the support from the Government, cumulative
sale is expected to reach 15-16 Million by 2020
Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &)
Electric Vehicles (FAME India):
➢GoI launched the scheme namely FAME under
NEMMP 2020 in for 2015-16
➢Indian thinktank NITI Aayog has planned complete e
mobility by year 2030 and replacing it with fossil fuel

➢Under the scheme, a total of 150,550 hybrid
and electric vehicles received incentives till July 26,
2017 and the scheme is now being handled by Niti
Aayog, GoI think tank on e Mobility .
11 Cities selected for pilot project of Multi-Modal
Electric Public Transport under FAME India:
➢GoI is providing Rs 437 crore subsidy to 11 cities
under FAME India, for launching electric buses, taxis
➢The cities include Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore,
Jaipur, Mumbai, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Indore and
Kolkata, plus two cities – Jammu and Guwahati
under special category. The nine big cities in the list
will be given subsidy for 40 buses each while

• Himachal Pradesh: Goldstone Infratech Ltd has
started e Bus operation Himachal Pradesh . The
electric buses are manufactured in a tie-up with
Chinese firm BYD
• Punjab: Chinese major Zhuhai Yinlong launched a
pilot project
in Amritsar
to run electric cars and
to set up an electrical
buses

manufacturing facility in Punjab.
•Andhra Pradesh: Toyota Kirloskar has inked a MoU
with Government of Andhra Pradesh in Amaravati
to introduce electric vehicles in the state.
• The Bengaluru Transport Corporation tender
documents in process to procure 150 electric buses

• The Pune Smart City Development
Corporation Limited (PSCDCL) is submitting a
proposal for procuring 60 electric buses
under the National Electric Mobility Mission
Plan 2020.

•Mumbai's bus service, is

•The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is

EV Battery
• An electric-vehicle battery (EVB) is a battery used to power
the propulsion of battery electric
vehicles (BEVs). Vehicle batteries are usually a secondary
(rechargeable) battery.
• Rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles include
NiCd, nickel–metal
hydride, lithium-ion, Li- ion polymer, and, less commonly,
zinc–air and molten-salt batteries.
• The most popular battery is Li ion .
• But Li availability in Indian subcontinent and ASEAN
is minimal and is dependent on import from China
,Japan and South Korea , so development of alternate
technology is must of Indian future energy security

• All batteries have depth of discharge (DOD)
beyond which its life is reduced. For most Lithium
Ion batteries the DOD is 70% (max).
• For example ,100 kWh battery should not be
discharged below a residual 30 kWh level. As the
residual power in the battery decreases towards
the DOD levels, the stress on the battery increases
• The State Of Charge (100%) of a battery is the
opposite concept – it is equal to 100% when the
DoD is 0%, and 0% when the DoD is 100%

Effort towards Indigenous

• ISRO’s lithiuŵ-ion battery technology is
transferring under the ’Make IŶ IŶdia’
initiative for electric vehicles
• Metal-air batteries have high specific energy
because the cathode is provided by the
surrounding oxygen in the air. India has
signed an initial pact with Israel's Phinergy
Ltd for developing ultra lightweight metal-air
batteries that can be used in EVs
Sodium batteries: The new hallenger to
lithium-ion for use in electric vehicles
•Sodium makes up the ďatteƌy’s Đathode,
aĹśd the anode is made from phosphorus, with
the addition of a compound called myo-
inositol, which can be derived from rice bran
or corn, this chemical combination yields
efficiency rates comparable to that of lithium-
ion batteries at a lower cost

• Stage One – Developing battery pack
manufacturing capacity and establishing R&D

• India will be manufacturing primarily battery packs
from imported cells during this period, India stands
to capture 25–40 percent of the economic
opportunity from battery sales, an economic value
of between INR 0.4 lakh crore and INR 0.5 lakh crore
• Stage Two – Scaling supply chain, capitalizing on
research and development, and realizing the
benefits of the consortium-led approach to set
strategy and planning for battery cell manufacture.

will still be manufacturing only packs in this period, India
continues to capture 25– 40 percent of the total economic

•Stage Three – Scaling end-to-end manufacturing capacity
for batteries, particularly focusing on battery cell capacity
2026 and 2030 will be at least 2,410 GWh

Assuming that India will be manufacturing both
cells and packs while importing only cathodes
(depending on technology used), India stands to
capture nearly 80 percent of the total economic
opportunity, an economic value of INR 9.3–13.7
lakh crore.

. Feebate is a market-based policy combining fees
with rebates to reward energy-efficient or envi-
ronmentally friendly investments or practices and
penalize inefficient and non green one

Why EV ? • The Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI) is a multi- government policy forum established in 2009 under the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) • The EVI engaged private stakeholders in roundtables in Paris in 2010, in Stuttgart in 2012 and at COP21 in 2015 • The EV30@30 campaign, launched at the Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial in 2017, set the collective goal for all EVI members of a 30% market share for EV in all vehicles by 2030. • India , although a late comer has planned all fossil fuels to be replaced by EV in 2030 : a vision of NITI Aayog , GoI thinktank

Advantage of EV • Electric Vehicles (EVs) are almost five times more energy efficient as compared to ICE vehicles, • Use only 25 to 30 moving parts as opposed to over 2000 moving parts in an ICE vehicle, amounting to far greater reliability • And with the battery prices falling, the EVs will have their capital costs (for vehicles without range anxiety) equal to the ICE vehicles with their operational costs about a fifth of that of ICE vehicles

It is followed by the Netherlands • With a 6.4% electric car market share, and Sweden with 3.4%. Charging station standards may be selected in a manner to enable interoperability (charging of different makes of vehicles) so that third-party service providers can set up charging stations catering

Charging Stations and Type • IEC committee has defined IEC 62196-2 types socket outlets. • Both 3 ,4 wheelers, and buses can primarily use the DC EVSEs, depending on the EV OEM preferences, based on the battery chemistry. • Four different standards for DCFCs in practice : • CHAdeMO: Japan set up the CHAdeMO association (Charge de Move) in 2010. CHAdeMO charging station can only be used for cars with a matching CHAdeMO inlet • The CHAdeMO is typically rated for 125 A and 500 V DC, which translates to 62.5 kW, even allow the peak power charging upwards of 125 kW

Charging Stations and Type Combined Charging System (CCS) •The Combined Charging System (CCS) or Combo was developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for EVs with DC charging requirements. CCS-supported EVSE can only be used for cars with a matching CCS inlet. There are two versions of the CCS connector: •(1)The U.S. version combines the Type 1 Yazaki AC design with the additional DC pins, and (2) The European version combines the DC pins with the Type 2 Mennekes AC design.
  • 23. Charging Stations and Type • Type 1 is available for sale rated up to 200 A and 600 V on the DC lines, which translates to 120 kW peak power at best. European Type 2 seems much more capable with 200 A and 850 V, which in theory gives 170 kW peak power. • GB/T is a Chinese standard (20234), which can run up to 250 A and 750 V, which means that it is actually the most powerful DC fast-charger in the world with 187.5 kW capacity For bus, Manual DC connection at high power—SAE J- 1772
  • 24. EV CHARGER STANDARDS IN INDIA • Automobile Industry Standards (AIS)0138 was prepared by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) in 2016. This covers charger standards for both AC (Part 1) and DC(Part2) • BIS, the national standards body has constituted a technical Committee (ETD- 51) which is presently preparing standards for EVSEs for India. India EV Outlook Government of India Policies to Promote e-mobility National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 : ➢GoI launched NEMMP 2020 with targetof min 7 million sales every year . ➢With the support from the Government, cumulative sale is expected to reach 15-16 Million by 2020 Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME India): ➢GoI launched the scheme namely FAME under NEMMP 2020 in for 2015-16 ➢Indian thinktank NITI Aayog has planned complete e mobility by year 2030 and replacing it with fossil fuel

India EV Outlook ➢Under the scheme, a total of 150,550 hybrid and electric vehicles received incentives till July 26, 2017 and the scheme is now being handled by Niti Aayog, GoI think tank on e Mobility . 11 Cities selected for pilot project of Multi-Modal Electric Public Transport under FAME India: ➢GoI is providing Rs 437 crore subsidy to 11 cities under FAME India, for launching electric buses, taxis ➢The cities include Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Mumbai, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Indore and Kolkata, plus two cities – Jammu and Guwahati under special category. The nine big cities in the list will be given subsidy for 40 buses each while

The electric buses are manufactured in a tie-up with Chinese firm BYD • Punjab: Chinese major Zhuhai Yinlong launched a pilot project in Amritsar to run electric cars and to set up an electrical buses vehicle manufacturing facility in Punjab. •Andhra Pradesh: Toyota Kirloskar has inked a MoU with Government of Andhra Pradesh in Amaravati to introduce electric vehicles in the state. • The Bengaluru Transport Corporation tender documents in process to procure 150 electric buses

  • 30. EV Battery • An electric-vehicle battery (EVB) is a battery used to power the propulsion of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Vehicle batteries are usually a secondary (rechargeable) battery. • Rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles include NiCd, nickel–metal hydride, lithium-ion, Li- ion polymer, and, less commonly, zinc–air and molten-salt batteries. • The most popular battery is Li ion . • But Li availability in Indian subcontinent and ASEAN is minimal and is dependent on import from China ,Japan and South Korea , so development of alternate technology is must of Indian future energy security

For most Lithium Ion batteries the DOD is 70% (max). • For example ,100 kWh battery should not be discharged below a residual 30 kWh level. As the residual power in the battery decreases towards the DOD levels, the stress on the battery increases • The State Of Charge (100%) of a battery is the opposite concept – it is equal to 100% when the DoD is 0%, and 0% when the DoD is 100%

India has signed an initial pact with Israel's Phinergy Ltd for developing ultra lightweight metal-air batteries that can be used in EVs
