2. GERUNDS
A gerund is a non-finite form of a
verb used to make a verb phrase that
can replace a noun phrase. The
gerund shows as a verb that ends
with “ing”, and it allows us to refer to
the action of the verb nominally, so it
can be used as a subject or object.
Definition Characteristics
• The gerund can perform the function of subject, object and
predicative: Smoking endangers your health.
• It consists of the base form of a verb with “-ing” at the end.
• Like a noun the gerund can be modified by a noun in
the possessive case, a possessive adjective, or an adjective
• The gerund can be modified by an adverb.
• The gerund can be preceded by a preposition.

4. INFINITIVES
An infinitive is the verb form
that has “to” at the beginning,
for example, “to do” or “to drink”.
An important point to note is
the role of the word “to” in this.
“To” can be used as a
preposition, but in this case it’s
actually a part of the verb itself.
• It acts as a noun, adjective, or
adverb, and it is actually made up
of two words: to + verb.
• The most common way to use
infinitive verbs is as a direct
object or an indirect object.
• Infinitives can be used as
subjects of a sentence.
• They are used after many
adjectives.
