3. Performance- Based Music Video Analysis of
‘Girls’ by The 1975
The introduction of the song ‘Girls’ is represented in a series of close up shots of musical instruments
(specifically guitars) showing an illustrative link between the musical sounds of the guitars in the song and
the visuals of the artists playing the guitar as suggested by Andrew Goodwin. In relation to this, it portrays
the band as talented artists who are skilled in making music and putting on a great performance.
Throughout the video, the band members become replaced by girls, who
sing the song. This relates to the song title ‘Girls’ as well as relating to
certain lyrics in the song such as ‘now she’s living in my house’ which
suggests these girls are trying to take over their lives, represented with
the visuals of them taking over their music.

Throughout the video the audience comes across wide shots of the band that reveal them
playing certain instruments. Their positioning in the music video (as portrayed in the
screen shot) is positioned as if they were to perform to the audience, with the lead
vocalist in the middle, the two guitarists on either side of the lead vocalist and the
drummer behind them. There is a contrast in colours between the black on their clothing,
speakers and certain parts of their instruments, and the white background. This allows the
band to stand out against the white background as they perform, giving them the centre
attention. The rectangle border surrounding the drummer, acts as a motif for The 1975.
This is because, a similar concept of this rectangle features in the album cover of their
self-titled album.

‘Magic’ by Coldplay
This music video opens up with similar characteristics as a film
opening, as it makes use of a title sequence to present the director of the
music video, the artist and the song title. The black and white effect
placed on this opening, and the use of jazzy music suggests a black and
white, no sound film, a common type of film in the olden days. Certain
visuals such as the two hats placed at the bottom of the screen, and a
spiral pattern, complement the song title ‘Magic’ as they are objects
used in a stereotypical magic show.
Throughout the music video, text is used to allow the audience to
follow the narrative. It acts as subtitles to the movie they are
watching, portraying conventions of a narrative music video. As well
as that, it also follows the conventions of a olden days movie
whereby recordings were made on film.

The music video ends on a resolution whereby the problem of the
female magician’s husband abusing his wife is resolved and the
assistant has his spotlight in the show, as he becomes the main
magician. Again this conforms to Todorov’s theory of narrative, as
the ending involves a happy ending for both lead protagonists (in a
way) of the music video, hence suggesting a narrative based music
video.
Finishing the music video on ‘the end’ conforms to typical conventions,
more so of a book than a film. This again follows the conventions of a
narrative based music video as it wraps up the story, letting the audience
know it has ended. This also follows the theme of the music video, being
based on olden time film means that it will be presented as an olden time
film, whereby using ‘the end’ was commonly used.

‘Waiting All Night’ by Rudimental
This music video is based on the true-life story of San Francisco-born BMX champion and actor Kurt
Yaeger, who became an amputee after an accident in 2006. All the characters are pro BMX riders and
friends of Yaeger. This music video follows through a set of emotions that are triggered in the
audience, constructed in a way that portrays this media text as a documentary. This changes as
thesong ‘waiting all night’ begins to play, and it immediately becomes a it is portrayed through a new
angle as a concept-based music video. Certain camera shots such as close up shots of Yaegar
comatose, his friends distressed and literally ‘waiting all night’ at the hospital creates a sympathetic
response from the audience.
When the beat picks up, we come across certain accomplishments Yaegar has made, the up beat
music reflects these accomplishments creating feeling in the audience. Certain lifts in the mood
are created as smiles and jokes start to fill the screen, suggesting Yaegars improvement,
mentally and physically. His constant presence around bikes also suggests he is not ready to
give up on his passion, and portrays his determinism in going back up there.

Wide shots and close up shots are used to emphasise Yaegar’s struggle
as he starts to walk and bike again. The bridge in the music is also used
as tension to portray Yaegar’s hard work in having to learn to bike and
walk again. His body language reveals frustration and anger as he
throws the bike.Similarly, his friend’s facial expressions portray the
uncertainty of whether or not he will fight for his passion as they all
watch him.
During the bridge of the song, a tense atmosphere is created as Yaegar
stands on the bike, ready to go. Ultimately the tone changes, the beat
picks up and Yaegar starts riding his bike, doing what he could do
before the accident. Certain cut to clips of his friends watching him with
smiles on their faces and joining him suggest that they wish to engage
in this joyous moment. Wide shots of Yaegar doing some stunts and a
close up shot on his leg as he rides are components of a lifted mood that
the video portrays, creating happiness in the audience.
