1. Creativity
AS coursework (magazine):
Creativity is a key part of creating a magazine and making it successful. I had to be creative in order
to make my magazine stand out from the rest. I was mainly creative through the aspect of
technology. On InDesign I was able to place my images in a way that would entertain the viewer. For
example, on one of my double page spreads a used five sized down images of my model doing
different this like smiling, dancing, posing etc and put a black and white saturation on them (through
the use of Photoshop). I then put them in a line just above the middle of the double page spread,
and in the middle of the line of pictures I placed a long shot of my model holding a microphone in
colour. Using the range of different photos of my model striking different poses meant that there
was a variety of images to keep the audiences entertained and engaged. I also felt that if my model
was being ‘silly’ is some images it would make the audience feel like they could connect to her more
as she’s is portraying the ‘girl next door’ personality type. Creativity also cropped up when I was
trying to come up with sell lines and all the text for the contents page. I had to think of appropriate
stories/ features that would attract the audience who were interested in the genre of my music
magazine. I also had to be creative when writing the interview for my double page spreads. I
gathered ideas from noting down what my friends and I (my target audience) would like to know
about a music artist if we had the chance to interview them. I thought it would be best if I discussed
topics and gave answers that the audience could relate to, for example her celebrity crushes and
where she shops for her clothes. I gave the answer that she brought her clothes in high street, as this
would make her a down to earth person which my target audience could relate to as many other
music artists are able to and choose to shop in branded shops such as Gucci, which many of my
target audience would not be able to afford. I also was able to be creative when taking my photos. I
thought of using different places to shoot, for example the studio and also outside. The poses were
also very important and I thought it would be best to use serious photos of my model but also
humorous ones as I wanted my magazine to not be to serious. Overral, creativity has been extremely
important when creating my magazine as it has allowed me to produce something different and
independent and not something that I have just copied from a already known magazine.
A2 Coursework (music video and digipak):
Creativity is a key part of creating a magazine and making it successful. I had to be creative in order
to make my magazine stand out from the rest. I was mainly creative through the aspect of
technology. My creativity was used when editing the photos for my digipak. I had ideas of placing a
‘moody’ effect on my images that were already taken in front of a black background. I created this
moody effect by placing saturation on the images on Photoshop. This made the black background
turn purple which I felt looked really good. It also emphasized the models features i.e. her curly hair
which portrays her wild personality which are seen in the actual music video. The purple background
then allowed me to choose the colour scheme for my magazine advert and my digipak (purple and
white). I also had to be creative when editing together my footage. I found this the most difficult,
2. especially as I change my song half way through the course which meant I changed from
performance to narrative. My creative side came out when coming up with the idea of the narrative
for my music video. I was able to come up with a narrative within a week which shows that being
creative helped me get back on track. In terms of editing I had to take the footage and place them in
a timeline. This timeline would later become my finished music video however I had to make sure
that I had a range of different shots and transitions and also that my music video flowed. This was
important as it would later mean that my music video would look professional and well put together.
