Lennon Riley conducted a survey of 10 respondents to help determine the focus and design of a new music magazine. Most respondents were under 18, listened to music daily, and preferred rock, pop, hip hop, and electronic genres. The magazine will focus on these genres and target 14-18 year olds of both genders, coming out monthly for around £3 per issue with aspects of popular magazines like Q, NME and Mixmag.
2. Question 1 – What is your gender?
10 people responded to my survey,
with 5 of the respondents being
male and the other 5 being female.
This tells me that the magazine
should appeal to both genders in
order to not alienate half of the
potential readers. This will be
done by using fonts and colours
not associated with either gender.
3. Question 2 – What is your age?
All respondents were under the age of
18, which shows that my magazine
should aim to appeal towards a younger
audience. This can be done by
showcasing artists that most people in
this age category are interested
in. However, the sample of respondents
can be seen as somewhat biased, as the
survey was mostly taken at college by
college students. This should be taken
into account when making the
magazine as older potential readers
wouldn't have had the same opportunity
to respond to the survey.
4. Question 3 – How often do you listen to
music?
7 of the respondents said that they
listen to music more than once
every day, and 1 respondent said
that they listen to music at least
once a week. This implies that
most teenagers listen to music,
which means that the magazine
will most likely need a general
appeal towards all
teenagers/young people.
5. Question 4 – How often do you buy music?
More than half of the respondents don't buy music
whatsoever, which implies that is they do indeed
listen to music, they most likely either stream or
torrent music. Even if you take out the 2 respondents
who don't listen to music, it still leaves 4 respondents
who do listen to music who don't buy any, which is
equal to the amount of respondents who do buy
music. Since the magazine can't approve of torrenting,
the magazine should aim to bring attention to music
streaming services. Other respondents said that they
do buy music, with 2 buying music at least once every
month, 1 buying at least once every week, and 1
buying music every day. This shows that there are
teenagers who are willing to fork out the money to
buy the music that they like. The magazine should
focus on ways to buy music as well as streaming
services, like CDs, Vinyl records or digital downloads.
The 2 methods should be equally focused on, as the
respondents who listen to music have half buying the
music they listen to and half not.
6. Question 5 – What genres of music are you
interested in?
This question allowed the
respondents to choose more than
one answer if they wanted to in
order to get a wider range of
answers. I felt this was necessary
as this question could potentially
change what type of magazine I
am going to make. The most
popular genres chosen were rock,
pop, hip-hop and electronic, so
these genres should be the main
focus of my magazine.
7. Question 6 – Who is your favourite music
artist or band?
This question only allowed write-in answers, in order to let the respondents answer the question
freely. All of the responses given fit into the four most popular genres chosen in the previous question:
• Rock
• Coldplay
• Ray LaMontagne
• Nirvana
• Catfish & The Bottlemen
• Pop
• George Michael
• Hip-Hop
• Watsky
• Anderson .Paak
• Death Grips
• Electronic
• Matoma
I will aim to focus my magazine on these genres and artists similar to the ones written in.
8. Question 7 – How often do you buy music
magazines?
The majority of the respondents
said that they don't buy music
magazines, and the ones that do
buy them either monthly or yearly.
Since monthly is a smaller
timeframe, and a monthly
magazine would be more than
likely more popular than a yearly
magazine, I should aim to make
my magazine a monthly release. I
should also aim to draw in those
who don't buy music magazines in
order to widen the magazine's
audience.
9. Question 8 – What are your favourite music
magazines?
Although the majority of
respondents in the previous question
said that they didn't buy music
magazines, 19 answers were given
in (discounting the Other option,
with both write-ins saying they don't
read music magazines). This implies
that some of the respondents who
don't buy music magazines still read
them if they can. The three most
popular choices were NME, Q and
Mixmag, so I will design my
magazine to have similar aesthetics
to those three magazines.
10. Question 9 – How much money are you
willing to spend on individual music
magazines?
Almost all of the respondents
prefer magazines to be cheaper
than £10, so my magazine needs
to be in that price range.
Considering how overwhelming
the result is for the magazine
being the cheapest option, I have
decided to make my magazine cost
a lot less than £10 to around £3.
11. Question 10 – What kind of music magazine
would you prefer?
Half of the respondents said that they
would prefer a magazine that covers
more than one genre, and 2 people
said that they would prefer a
magazine that covers all genres.
However, 3 people said that they
would prefer a magazine that only
covers one genre. To compromise, I
will make my magazine cover
multiple genres (the ones touched on
in previous questions) but have one
genre be touched on more than
others. Rock will be the main genre
as it had the most votes in Question
5.
12. From the responses that I have collected, I have decided to focus
my music magazine on rock music, although my magazine will
also focus on pop, hip-hop and electronic music as they proved
to be popular in the survey. My magazine will target 14-18 year
olds of both genders as all respondents were under the age of
18, although my magazine won't be afraid to try and draw in older
audiences. My magazine will try to draw in teenagers who don't
usually read magazines by including exclusive interviews with
artists that most teenagers may be interested in, since most of
the respondents said that they don't usually buy music
magazines. I will release my magazine weekly and make it cost
around £3 so that my target audience will be able to buy every
issue without spending too much on it. My magazine will take
design aspects from Q, NME and Mixmag.
