Evaluation
Thisreportis an EvaluationforThe FilmOpeningTitle Sequence Project,duringthisprojectIhadto
complete sevendifferenttaskstocomplete it.These tasksincludedAnalysingthree differentfilm
openingtitle sequences,analysingfilmreports/reviewsfromamagazine completingsome
secondaryresearchanalysis,generatingideasformyownopeningtitle sequence,the pre-
production,ProductionandPostProduction.
Pre-Production:
Mind Map: For the start of my pre-productionIhad
to start my ideasgenerationbycreatingamindmap.
I had to create manydifferentsectionsforeachgenre
that I wouldbe interestedindoingformyfilm
openingtitle sequence,Ihadto label whatIwould
include foreachgenre,suchas locations,typesof
characters,props,costumes,shotsetc.Thiswouldbe
basedon whatI wouldlike toinclude andalsowhat
wouldtypicallybe includedinthattype of film.The
picture at the side isan example of howthe mind
map wouldlooklike,withbarelyanyimagesand
mostlytext. Eachsectionstateswhatis includedina
filmopeningtitlesequenceandthe labelscomingoff
it showseachgenre andwhat isincludedforeach
one.For mostgenre’sIwrote notesbasedonwhat I
wouldinclude orwhatistypicallyincluded,forothers
I wrote paragraphsto give more detail whenitcame
to describingwhatIwouldbe includingandwhy.For
thistask I dofeel like Icouldhave includedsome
more detail whenitcame to describingwhatI
wantedtoinclude.
Mood Board: The nextstepof the pre-production
was decidingonagenre and creatinga storyboardforthat chosengenre.The moodboard had
differentslidesbasedonwhatwouldbe included,eachslidecontainedmanyimages,andthe images
wouldbe fromdifferentmoviesthatare in thatgenre.I had chosena Supernatural Horrorformy
filmopeningtitlesequence,Ithoughtthatchoosinga supernatural horrorwouldbe interesting
because connectstothe target audience’sdeepestfears.FormymoodboardI had focusedon
movieslike Annabelle, Paranormal ActivityandInsidious.Thesewere the mainfilmsIchose tolook
at whenitcame to includingimagesformymoodboard;all three are supernatural horrorsandare
all differentattractingdifferentaudiences.Ihadto lookat the differentkindsof shotsincludedin
thisgenre,locations,costumes/props,charactersetc.Everythingthatisincludedinhorrorfilmsthat
I can generate intomyownidea.Thisisan image takenfrommy moodboard; thisslide showedthe

differenttypesof charactersthatare includedinsupernatural horrors.Onthisslide Iincluded
ghosts,murders,psychopaths,possessedchildrenandalsopossesseddolls.Iwantedtouse some of
these kindsof charactersinmy own
idea.Maybe evenbringa few
characters intoone.
SecondaryresearchAnalysis: Forthis

to choose a mediamagazine fromthe
libraryandfindan article regardinga
film,itcouldbe reviewortalking
aboutpast or upcomingfilms.Ihad
chosenan article aboutthe film
Attack the Blockthat was releasedin
2014, the filmisa BritishSci-Fi drama
and focusesonLondon’syouths.Ihad
to readthrough the article andlookat
whatthe authorhad writtenandwhetherhis/her
mainquestionhadbeenanswered.The mainquestion
for thisarticle was“Attack the Block:B-movie or
Blockbuster”,itturnedoutthat due to the tight
budgetof the company,the filmfailedtogetthe
supportfromany Hollywoodblockbusterstudios.
Anotherquestionwasaskedtowhetherthe film
shouldhave stayedasa lowbudgetBritishfilmorhave
beena Hollywoodblockbuster.Itcame to the
conclusionthatthe filmshouldremainalow budget
Britishmovie because itturnsoutthat if itwouldhave
gottenthe attentionof anyHollywoodBlockbuster
studios,mostof the scriptwouldhave beenchanged
to lowerdownthe age rating,theywouldhave taken
out a lotof the swearinganddrugsthat are originally
included,thiswouldhave changedmostof the film
and eventhe plotandpersonalitiesof afew of the
characters.
IdeasGeneration: The final partbefore continuingonwiththe final stage of Pre-production,wasto
write a proposal forthe mainidea,I had toinclude whatgenre Ihad chosen,the content,Target
Audience,Ihadto explainhowmyopening title sequence wouldattractmytarget audience and
howit will interestthemandalsowhatthe filmcreditswill looklike.
I had chosena Supernatural Horroras my genre;Ihad chosenthisgenre because Ifindaninterestin
those typesof filmsandTV shows,I findtheminterestingwithhow the writerscome upwiththe
ideasandhowtheymake themwork fortheirtarget audience.Forthe locationof the sequence,it

wouldbe filmedinsideof aforest,aroundautumn/wintertime,thisgivesareallycreepy effect
especiallywhenthe sunisgoingdownandwhenit’sgettingclosertogettingdark,the branches
blowinginthe windgivesacreepyeffect,like achild’snightmare.Itgave the ideaof branches
lookinglike thinfingersinthe shadows.The propswouldbe mirrorsandoldcreepydolls,the mirrors
wouldbe placedonthe flooras if theyhad beensmashedandbeenthere fordecades,the shotfor
thisprop wouldshowthe treesinthe mirrors,andthe dollswouldbe hungfroma tree kindof
makinga recreationof the hangingdoll tree inMexico.Ourtargetaudience wouldbe aimedtowards
teenagersandyoungadults,withthe age groupbeingaround15+ it wouldgive awideraudience,it
wouldbe aimedatboth malesandfemalesmakingitfairandequal,and anyone thathas a like/love
for horror/thrillermovies.Iwantedthe sequence toappeal tothe audience,Iwantthemtobe
intrigued,andforthemtowant to continue watchingtofindoutwhathappensnext.Forthe title
creditsthe original ideawasforthe title tobe ina fontcalled“OctoberCrow”the fontlookedcreepy
and branch like,butwiththe effectsthatI wantedtobe includedwiththe textthe fontcouldn’t
workfor the sequence.The creditswere all meanttohave astatic effectaddedtoeach of them.In
the endthe maintitle wasthe onlypiece of textthathad the staticeffectincluded. The Plotwas
that decadesagopeople startedwalkingintothe forestbuttheynevercame back,eversince the
forest’sonlyresidentdied,people have gone missingandtheirbodieswouldappearmonthslaterat
the forest’sentrance.
Presentation: The final stage of the
ideasgenerationwastopresentthe idea
to our teacher,myself andmypartner
for thisprojectMeganhad to create a
presentationthatwoulddescribe and
showoff our FilmOpeningTitle
Sequence idea,the presentationhadto
not include thatmuchtext,more
images. Thisisan example slide from
the presentation;there were onlyfour
imagesincludedandonlyalittle amount
of text.Thiswas to showthe chosen
locationsandpropsthat wouldbe
includedinthe sequence.The
presentationlastedafewminutesanditwentprettywell,butIthinkthat I couldhave presentedmy
workwithoutlookingdownatthe scriptor lookingbackat the boardduringmy presentation.
Storyboard:For mystoryboardsI had to draw out eachof the shotsthat I plannedtofilmduringthe
Productionstage.Ihad to include whattype of shotthiswas,add a descriptionof whatishappening
inthe shot,anytextincluded,andeffects.The image atthe side isa page of the storyboardthat I
created.The descriptionwasaddedinonthe computeras well asall of the details.Ithenprintedoff
the storyboardsand thendrewthe shotsontothe page,I had to scan the pagesonto a computer
and place themina folderreadyto be uploadedontomyblog.The image at the side wasfor shots3
and 4. The firstshotfeaturedalarge tree that wouldhave dollshangingfromthe branches,the
recreationof the hangingdoll tree inMexico.The secondshotwasan extreme close upof one of the

dollsfaces,the original planwastodo a pan shotof the doll,the ideachangedwhenwe decided
that itwouldcreate a bettereffectif we filmedthe doll onagreenscreen,thenaddthe tree
backgroundinlateron. We did geta
shotof the large tree we justdidn’t
include the dollsafterdecidingtodo
it bygreenscreen.Most of the shots
were plannedtoonlylastfor5-9
seconds.
RiskAssessment: The riskassessment
issomethingwe hadto try to stickto,
thisinvolvedusgoingoutof college
and intoour chosenlocationtocheck
on whatrisksthere wouldbe during
filminginthatchosenlocation.The
mainriskswere:
● Weather– Too cold forthe cast and crew,rain.
● Slips,Tripsandfall (Injury) –due to us filmingveryclose toariverandin a forest.
● Productioncouldbe delayed –Noaccess to equipment,orextremelybadweather.
Whenfiguringoutwhatrisksthere couldbe duringfilming,Ihadto rate the riskfromlow to
extreme.The only extreme riskwasinjuryandthe productionbeingdelayed.Ithinkthispartof the
pre-productionwentverywell,we knew whatrisksthere wouldbe filmingoutsideandespeciallyin
that chosenlocation,we knewwhattodoto preventthatrisk fromhappeningorbeingpreparedfor
that risk,if it happensduringfilming.
LocationRecce:During the time we tookcheckingwhatkindsof risksthere couldbe inour chosen
location,we tookpicturesforourLocation
Recce.The Location Recce was to showwhatwe
wouldbe filming,whenwe will be filmingand
howthiswouldfeature inthe openingtitle
sequence.Thisimage isone of the picturesthat
we tookwhenfillinginthe RiskAssessmentand
the LocationRecce.This shotwas goingto be
usedas the hangingdoll tree,itwouldbe awide
shotand the dollswouldbe hungbytheirnecks
and one doll wouldbe satat the bottom of the tree.The Location Recce includedmapsof where
filmingwouldtake place,the imagesshowedwhatshotswouldbe takenandwhere,this alsohelped
out withgivingevidence forourRiskAssessment,because the picturesgave evidenceof where we
were filmingandthe risksthatcouldhappen.Thispartof the pre-productionwentsmoothlyandI
wouldn’tchange anythingaboutwhatwe didduringthispartof the project.
Production

On the day of the productionwe lookedthroughthe RiskAssessmentandmade sure thatnone of
the riskswouldhappensofar the weatherwasfine,the skywasgreywhichmade it creepierfor
filming.
We startedoff outside of the forest,tocapture the firstshotof the entrance;the firstshotwouldbe
the introductionof the openingtitlesequence.We were preparedforthe terribleweatheritdidn’t
rain butwe had to make sure we were careful withthe equipmentdue toitbeingmuddyinthe
forestthatwe were filmingin.Duringthe productionthere werepartswhenwe decidedtoadd
shotsintothe video.
For example one addedshotwasjustafterfilmingthe shotof the deadbody,I decidedthatitmight
add a more creepyeffect.Inthe previous
shotthe bodywaslay downonthe floor
and I got a trackingshot of the arm anda
camera waslocatednexttothe hand.For
thisaddedshotI got a camera POV,the
shotwill looklike the victim’scamerawas
still recordinganda pairof feetappearin
the shot (Villain).We filmedalotof
differentshotsasbackupsfor shotsthat
didn’tworkoutin the sequence inthe
end.The image at the side isa screenshot
of the addedshotthat we decidedtoadd
lastminute.ForthisshotI hadto crouch
downontothe floor,withthe cameraplaced
low down,I hadJameswalkinfront of the
camera andface it,thisshot makesitlooklike
the villainislookingdownatthe victim’sbody.
Thisshot wasan original ideaslightlychanged;
we couldn’tgeta holdof manymirrorslike we
had planned,soIgathereda few of my older
phonesthatare no use to me anymore.Made
it looklike there hadbeenastruggle witha
victimandplacedit onthe floorandgot a
trackingshot of the phone,I dida pull focus
technique toshowthe reflectionof the treesandalsothe cracks in the phone toshow signsof a
struggle.
Withthispart of the productionI dofeel asthoughI couldhave gottensome bettershotsthatI
couldhave includedinmyFilmOpeningTitleSequenceIfeel asthoughIwouldhave hadlarger
optionof shots.
To filmthe doll sceneswe hadtoset upa greenscreenandfilmthe doll thatway,our original idea
was to setthe doll infrontof the greenscreenanddo some panningand trackingshotsof the doll in
a close up.In the enda memberof staff suggestedthatwe take a pole andhangthe doll fromthere

withstring.We hung the doll fromthe poll andspunthe doll,whenitsloweddownwe
startedfilmingfromthe tripodandalso free handed.We gotdifferentshotsfromwide
shot,to extreme close up.Thispicture wastakenbefore we startedspinningthe doll.
Thisshot isfromof the
manyshots we got off the
doll,thisone wasdone free
handed.The filmingwent
well,eventhoughwe
couldn’tgetsome of the
propsthat we plannedto
get.But we managedto
make a compromise,anduse otherpropsinsteadwhichgave the same effect.Forthe greenscreen
shotsI thinkI couldhave gottensome bettershotsfromdifferentangles,some worm’seye view
shotsand some birdseye viewshots.

Editing:Istartedmy editingformyFilmOpeningTitle Sequence onAdobe afterEffects,Ihadchosen
the shotsthat I wantedto edit,andI importedthe footage intoaftereffects,Iwantedtomake each
shotdark and blackand white.Iclickedonthe shotI wantedto editandwentto the colour
correctionoptionandselectedBlackandWhite,thisoptionautomaticallysentthe footage intoblack
and white,Iwantedtomake it evendarkersoI selectedBrightnessandContrast.Iincreasedthe
contrast andloweredthe brightness
slightly. Thismade all of the dark
parts inthe footage standout a lot
more.WhenlookingforeffectsI
managedto findaneffectcalled“Old
Warp TV” thiseffectmade the
footage looklike itwasbeingviewed
throughan oldTV screen.I addedthis
effectina couple of shots,those shots
beingthe DeadBodyPOV, and the
maintitle.Ithoughtof onlyadding
thiseffectwiththese twoshots
because forthe firstshot itgivesthat
videocameralook,andfor the main
title itworksfor the whole creepyand
edgyfeel of the sequence.The image above iswhatthe footage lookslikewiththe effects,blackand
white andbrightnessandcontrast.
Aftereditingthe footage onaftereffects,
I createda secondprojecton after
effectstocreate the credits,the credits
wouldbe addedontothe premierwith
the footage lateron. I useda simple font
and thenaddeda shaky/staticeffectthis
wouldmake the textshake.

For the baby doll clipIhad to use the Keylightoption,thiscontainedanoptiontoselectthe
backgroundcolour.Before doingthisIhad toselectthe footage of the tree and place itabove the
babydoll footage.Ithenclickedonthe baby doll
footage andclickedthe tool onthe Keylight
effect.Thisremovedthe greenbackgroundand
replaceditwiththe tree footage.Ithenselected
the black andwhite,brightnessandcontrast
colourcorrectionoptionforbothpiecesof
footage.Ithensetmodeson the tree footage to
“Scene”.Whenthe footage playedtogetherthis
made the tree merge intothe doll'seyesandhalf
of the doll’sface whenthe doll spunaround. The
imagesabove isa comparisonof the two.The
firstone beingafterthe effectshadbeen
addedand the secondbeingbefore.
For the start of the sequence Iwantedto
make it lookprofessional,soImanagedto
geta clipof the WarnerBros. logo,I then
tookit to aftereffects,made itblackand
white andincreasedthe contrastslightly.I
thenwentto affectsandfounda rain
effect.Igot thisideafromthe start of the
Harry Potterfilms.
Afterfinishingthe creditsandthe footage Ihadto render it all,Iclickedonone of the clipsand went
to the compositionbutton,Iclickedonthe “Addto renderqueue”Ichangedthe videosettingsto
“Quicktime”made sure thatthe settingswere settoRGB, I thenwentto “FormatOptions”and
changeditfrom AnimationtoH.264. I thenselected“Outputto” selectedwhereIwantedthe edited
footage togo and thenclickedrender.Irepeatedthisforeachclip.
Whenit came to renderingthe textcredits,Ihadto change the format optionstoAnimations,thenI
had to change the RGB to RGB+Alpha.Ittook longerorthe footage torenderthanit didthe text,
due to the amountof differenteffectsare includedinthe footage.

Adobe PremierPro: ForthisnextpartI had to openup Adobe Premier,Ihadto name my sequence,
thenI had to selecthowmanyframesthe footage had.Ihad to go to my footage inmydocuments
and thenrightclick,go to
propertiesandthenlookatthe
detailstofindouthowmany
framesthere are.I wentback to
premierandselectedthe correct
optionthatmatchesthe amount
of framesfromthe footage.I
thencreatedtwodifferent
foldersinPremiertoseparate
the footage fromthe text.I
importedthemintothe right
foldersandstarteddraggingin
the editedfootage intothe order
I wantedthemin.I thenstarted
to lookthroughthe footage whentheywere all placedinthe rightorder,Iusedthe Razor tool to cut
downsome of the footage makingthe videoshorter.
For some shotsI sloweddownthe footage,togive itamore creepyand edgyeffect,Isloweddown
the clipsthat featuredthe hanging/spinningbabydoll,Isloweddownthoseclipstoaround70%. This
made the effectsmore noticeableanditalsomade ita lotmore intense.Iaddedone of the extreme
close upsof the babydoll intothe secondshot,the secondshotbeingthe entrance tothe forest.I
cut some parts of the babydoll shotusingthe razor tool,and didthe same withthe forestentrance
shot,and I filledinthe emptypartsof the forestentrance withthe doll footage.With the musicthat
I had chosenitfitsperfectly.
Wheneach piece of footage wasinplace,Ineededtoaddin the text.I draggedthe textthat I
neededandplacedthemabove the footage thatIwanteditin.

footage forthat text.Ihad to make sure that the textwasn’ttooclose to the edgessothat it

wouldn’tgetcutoff whenithad beenexported.Imade sure thatall of the textforeach one wasthe
same size sothat each shotdidn’tlookodd.
I had chosenthe musicoff YouTube,the personwhouploadedandcreatedthe songsaidthatit was
available tobe usedbyviewerssothenIknew thatit wouldn’tbe anissue whenitcame to usingit
for myopeningtitle sequence.Iconvertedthe musictoan MP3 and thenaddedit below the
footage.Whenitcame to findingthe musicitwasquite hard because Ididn’t know if itwouldwork
withthe sequence,the computerthatIwasworkingon hadan issue withearphonesIsomething
was stuckinside the computersoIcouldn’tputmy earphonesin,Ihad to use myphone and play
boththe audioandthe sequence atthe same time tomake sure it worked.Luckilyitdidanditwas
readyto be exportedintoamediafile.IexporteditandthenuploadeditontomyYouTube channel
and straightto myblog.
Final EditFeedback: Whenmyfinal editwasuploadedIsentthe linktoa few people togettheir
feedbackonhowitlooked.
“I think it's great, i don't think you have to
improve anything really, but just a
suggestion on the last part why don't you
actually put like the actual ending of that
song like so that it sounds like it's actually
ended just that”
Looking back on my final edit I am happy
with how it turned out, but I do agree with
the feedback and it would have a better
effect if I did add something into the audio
at the end to finish the sequence. I do
think that I could have chosen a better
font for the sequence, possibly
something that would match the genre
and plot of the “Film”. My favourite part of
the sequence is the baby doll shots, I
love how both shots merge together
making it look like the doll is burning. And
how the eyes suddenly look black like a
demon. It makes the sequence, it makes
the entire idea.
