8. In Essay on the Principle of
Population, Malthus proposes the
principle that human populations
grow exponentially (i.e., doubling
with each cycle) while food
production grows at an arithmetic
rate (i.e. by the repeated addition
of a uniform increment in each
uniform interval of time).
9. Stages of Demographic Transition
Stage 1 - High Fluctuating
Birth Rate and Death rate are both high. Population growth is
slow and fluctuating.
Stage 2 - Early Expanding
Birth Rate remains high. Death Rate is falling. Population begins
to rise steadily.
Stage 3 - Late Expanding
Birth Rate starts to fall. Death Rate continues to fall. Population
rising.
Stage 4 - Low Fluctuating
Birth Rate and Death Rate both low. Population steady.
10. As of 2017, it is estimated at
7.5 billion by the United States
Census Bureau (USCB).
The USCB estimates that the world population exceeded 7 billion on
March 12, 2012
According to a separate estimate by the United Nations
Population Fund, it reached this milestone on October 31, 2011.

World Population Scenario
12. The world population has experienced continuous growth since the end of the Great
Famine and the Black Death in 1350, when it was near 370 million.
The highest growth rates – global population increases above 1.8% per year –
occurred briefly during the 1950s, and for longer during the 1960s and 1970s.
The global growth rate peaked at 2.2% in 1963, and has declined to below 1.1% as of
2012
Total annual births were highest in the late 1980s at about 138 million, and are now
expected to remain essentially constant at their 2011 level of 134 million, while
deaths number 56 million per year, and are expected to increase to 80 million per
year by 2040

17. World Population
• Population in the world is currently (2017) growing at a rate of
around 1.11% per year (down from 1.13% in 2016). The current average
population change is estimated at around 80 million per year.
• Annual growth rate reached its peak in the late 1960s, when it was at 2%
and above. The rate of increase has therefore almost halved since its peak
of 2.19 percent, which was reached in 1963.
• The annual growth rate is currently declining and is projected to continue
to decline in the coming years. Currently, it is estimated that it will
become less than 1% by 2020 and less than 0.5% by 2050.
• This means that world population will continue to grow in the 21st
century, but at a slower rate compared to the recent past. World
population has doubled (100% increase) in 40 years from 1959 (3 billion)
to 1999 (6 billion). It is now estimated that it will take a further 39 years to
increase by another 50%, to become 9 billion by 2038.
• The latest United Nations projections indicate that world population will
reach 10 billion persons in the year 2056 (six years earlier than previously
estimated).

19. World Population Milestones
• 10 Billion (2056)
The United Nations projects world population to reach 10 billion in the year 2056.
• 8 Billion (2023)
World population is expected to reach 8 billion people in 2023 according to the United Nations (in 2026 according to
the U.S. Census Bureau).
• 7.5 Billion (2017)
The current world population is 7.5 billion as of July 2017 [1] according to the most recent United Nations
estimates elaborated by Worldometers. The term "World Population" refers to the human population (the total
number of humans currently living) of the world.
• 7 Billion (2011)
According to the United Nations, world population reached 7 Billion on October 31, 2011.
The US Census Bureau made a lower estimate, for which the 7 billion mark was only reached on March 12, 2012.6
Billion (1999)
According to the United Nations, the 6 billion figure was reached on October 12, 1999 (celebrated as the Day of 6
Billion). According to the U.S. Census Bureau instead, the six billion milestone was reached on July 22, 1999, at
about 3:49 AM GMT. Yet, according to theU.S. Census web site, the date and time of when 6 billion was reached
will probably change because the already uncertain estimates are constantly being updated.Previous Milestones
