Environmental benefits of steel recycling
• Recycling steel saves energy and natural resources.
• In a year, the steel industry saves the equivalent energy to power about 18 million
households. When one ton of steel is recycled,
• 2500 pounds of iron ore,
• 1400 pounds of coal and
• 120 pounds of limestone are conserved.
• By making recycling integral to steelmaking, the steel industry leads the buy recycled
effort. Each year, more than 62% of the steel the domestic industry produces is
recycled.

Basic Oxygen Furnace
• The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) process uses 25 to
35 percent old steel to make new. It produces
products— such as automotive fenders,
encasements of refrigerators, and packaging like
soup cans, five-gallon pails, and 55-gallon drums—
whose major required characteristic is drawability.

Therefore, the total recycled content to produce the
44,503,000 tons of raw steel in the BOF is: 14,552,500 / 44,503,000 = 32.7%
(Total Tons Ferrous Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel)
Also, the post-consumer recycled content is:
(13,592,500 - 2,256,400) + 10,000 = 11,346,100
And 11,346,100 /44,503,000 = 25.5%
(Post-Consumer Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel)
Finally, the pre-consumer recycled content is:
(760,000 + 2,256,400) / 44,503,000 = 3,016,400/ 44,503,000 = 6.8%

Electric Arc Furnace
• The electric arc furnace (EAF) process uses more
than 80 percent old steel to make new. It produces
products— such as structural beams, steel plates,
and reinforcement bars—whose major required
characteristic is strength.

Therefore, the total recycled content to produce the 61,329,700 tons of raw steel in
the EAF is: 57,199,300 / 61,329,700= 93.3%
(Total Tons Ferrous Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel)
Also, the post-consumer recycled content is:
(41,710,600 - 6,924,000) + 85,000 = 34,871,600
And 34,871,600 / 61,329,700 = 56.9%
(Post-Consumer Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel)
Finally, the pre-consumer recycled content is:
(12,323,000 +6,924,000) / 61,329,700 = 19,247,000 / 61,329,700 = 31.4%

BOF Steel Recycled Content Value for Typical Product: Culverts
Value = ($10,000) (25.5% + ½ 6.8%) = ($10,000) (28.9%) = $2,890
(Positive net contributor to 10% and 20% goals)
EAF Steel Recycled Content Value for Typical Product: Storm Drains
Value = ($10,000) (56.9% + ½ 31.4%) = ($10,000) (72.6%) = $7,260

MR Credit 4: Recycled Content
1–2 Points
Intent
To increase demand for building products that incorporate
recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting
from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

Requirements
• Use materials with recycled content1 such that the sum of postconsumer2 recycled content plus 1/2 of
the pre-consumer 3 content constitutes at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of the
materials in the project.
• The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows:
• Recycled Content Points
• 10% - 1
• 20% - 2
• The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the
assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value.
• Mechanical, electrical and plumbing components and specialty items such as elevators cannot be
included in this calculation. Include only materials permanently installed in the project. Furniture may
be included if it is included consistently in MR Credit 3: Materials Reuse through MR Credit 7: Certified
Wood.

Potential Technologies & Strategies
• Establish a project goal for recycled content materials, and identify material
suppliers that can achieve this goal.
• During construction, ensure that the specified recycled content materials are
installed. Consider a range of environmental, economic and performance attributes
when selecting products and materials.

1–2 Points
Intent
To divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in
landfills and incineration facilities. Redirect recyclable recovered
resources back to the manufacturing process and reusable
materials to appropriate sites.

Intent
In addition, if demolition work is done on the job site – such as
removing old culvert -- up to two points that can be gained if the
weighted average values of steel and the other construction
materials meet the minimum values.

Summary
• Steel is North America's Number #1 Recycled Material. Each year, more steel is recycled than aluminum,
paper, glass and plastic combined!
• Scrap has become the steel industry's single largest source of raw material because it is economically
advantageous to recycle old steel into new steel. In light of this, steelmaking furnaces have been designed
to consume steel scrap.
• In fact, in the past 50 years, approximately 50 percent of the steel produced in this country has been
recycled through the steelmaking process. Thanks to the steel industry's impressive history of recycling, a
wide variety of collection programs exist to recycle steel products.
• All of these programs tap into the steel recycling infrastructure, a well-established network of more than
2,000 ferrous scrap processors and more than 70 end markets. This steel recycling infrastructure, which
has grown and matured over the years in its efforts to meet the steel industry's demand for steel scrap, is
the reason today's steel recycling efforts actually supersede those of the past.

  • 3. © 2009 NCSPA Environmental benefits of steel recycling • Recycling steel saves energy and natural resources. • In a year, the steel industry saves the equivalent energy to power about 18 million households. When one ton of steel is recycled, • 2500 pounds of iron ore, • 1400 pounds of coal and • 120 pounds of limestone are conserved. • By making recycling integral to steelmaking, the steel industry leads the buy recycled effort. Each year, more than 62% of the steel the domestic industry produces is recycled. Big Picture

  • 9. Basic Oxygen Furnace • The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) process uses 25 to 35 percent old steel to make new. It produces products— such as automotive fenders, encasements of refrigerators, and packaging like soup cans, five-gallon pails, and 55-gallon drums— whose major required characteristic is drawability. © 2009 NCSPA

BOF Rates Therefore, the total recycled content to produce the 44,503,000 tons of raw steel in the BOF is: 14,552,500 / 44,503,000 = 32.7% (Total Tons Ferrous Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel) Also, the post-consumer recycled content is: (13,592,500 - 2,256,400) + 10,000 = 11,346,100 And 11,346,100 /44,503,000 = 25.5% (Post-Consumer Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel) Finally, the pre-consumer recycled content is: (760,000 + 2,256,400) / 44,503,000 = 3,016,400/ 44,503,000 = 6.8% (Pre-Consumer Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel) © 2009 NCSPA
  • 11. Electric Arc Furnace • The electric arc furnace (EAF) process uses more than 80 percent old steel to make new. It produces products— such as structural beams, steel plates, and reinforcement bars—whose major required characteristic is strength. © 2009 NCSPA

EAF Rates Therefore, the total recycled content to produce the 61,329,700 tons of raw steel in the EAF is: 57,199,300 / 61,329,700= 93.3% (Total Tons Ferrous Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel) Also, the post-consumer recycled content is: (41,710,600 - 6,924,000) + 85,000 = 34,871,600 And 34,871,600 / 61,329,700 = 56.9% (Post-Consumer Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel) Finally, the pre-consumer recycled content is: (12,323,000 +6,924,000) / 61,329,700 = 19,247,000 / 61,329,700 = 31.4% (Pre-Consumer Scrap / Total Tons Raw Steel) © 2009 NCSPA

Sample Calculation Steel Recycled Content Value = (Value of Steel Product) (Post-Consumer % + ½ Pre-Consumer %) BOF Steel Recycled Content Value for Typical Product: Culverts Value = ($10,000) (25.5% + ½ 6.8%) = ($10,000) (28.9%) = $2,890 (Positive net contributor to 10% and 20% goals) EAF Steel Recycled Content Value for Typical Product: Storm Drains Value = ($10,000) (56.9% + ½ 31.4%) = ($10,000) (72.6%) = $7,260 (Positive net contributor to 10% and 20% goals) © 2009 NCSPA

  • 15. LEED Credit Info MR Credit 4: Recycled Content 1–2 Points Intent To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials. © 2009 NCSPA
  • 16. LEED Credit Info Requirements • Use materials with recycled content1 such that the sum of postconsumer2 recycled content plus 1/2 of the pre-consumer 3 content constitutes at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project. • The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows: • Recycled Content Points • 10% - 1 • 20% - 2 • The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value. • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing components and specialty items such as elevators cannot be included in this calculation. Include only materials permanently installed in the project. Furniture may be included if it is included consistently in MR Credit 3: Materials Reuse through MR Credit 7: Certified Wood. © 2009 NCSPA

LEED Credit Info Potential Technologies & Strategies • Establish a project goal for recycled content materials, and identify material suppliers that can achieve this goal. • During construction, ensure that the specified recycled content materials are installed. Consider a range of environmental, economic and performance attributes when selecting products and materials. © 2009 NCSPA
  • 18. LEED Credit Info MR Credit 2: Construction Waste Management 1–2 Points Intent To divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in landfills and incineration facilities. Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process and reusable materials to appropriate sites. © 2009 NCSPA
  • 19. LEED Credit Info MR Credit 3: Materials Reuse 1–2 Points Intent In addition, if demolition work is done on the job site – such as removing old culvert -- up to two points that can be gained if the weighted average values of steel and the other construction materials meet the minimum values. © 2009 NCSPA
  • 20. LEED Credit Info MR Credit 5: Regional Materials 1–2 Points Intent To increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation. © 2009 NCSPA

  • 27. Summary • Steel is North America's Number #1 Recycled Material. Each year, more steel is recycled than aluminum, paper, glass and plastic combined! • Scrap has become the steel industry's single largest source of raw material because it is economically advantageous to recycle old steel into new steel. In light of this, steelmaking furnaces have been designed to consume steel scrap. • In fact, in the past 50 years, approximately 50 percent of the steel produced in this country has been recycled through the steelmaking process. Thanks to the steel industry's impressive history of recycling, a wide variety of collection programs exist to recycle steel products. • All of these programs tap into the steel recycling infrastructure, a well-established network of more than 2,000 ferrous scrap processors and more than 70 end markets. This steel recycling infrastructure, which has grown and matured over the years in its efforts to meet the steel industry's demand for steel scrap, is the reason today's steel recycling efforts actually supersede those of the past. © 2009 NCSPA
