ROADMAP TO NET-ZERO CARBON
IN BUILDING SECTOR
ABOUT VIETNAM GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL (VGBC)
1,5°C TARGET – REMAINING CARBON BUDGET
To limit global warming to 1.5 C – a threshold the
Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC)
suggests – carbon neutrality by 2050 is essential.
This target is also laid down in the Paris
agreement signed by 195 countries
• Carbon neutrality means having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon
from the atmosphere in carbon sinks.
• Removing carbon oxide from the atmosphere and then storing it is known as carbon
sequestration.
• In order to achieve net zero emissions, all worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will
have to be counterbalanced by carbon sequestration.

At Saint-Gobain, we promote a “fabric first”
approach, meaning that the building should
first be energy efficient through its highly
performing envelope. Needs for heating,
cooling and lighting should be limited to the
unavoidable minimum, and the remaining
needed energy supplied with renewable
and decarbonized sources. This principle
applies both to renovation, to reduce the
energy consumption of existing buildings,
and for the design of new buildings, that
should have energy needs close to 0.

EMBODIED CARBON REDUCTION
The four most important construction materials are cement, steel,
aluminum and plastic. Of the remaining material categories, insulation,
doors, windows and glass products, and gypsum, cement and mortar
categories also stand out in importance.

How important is embodied carbon in building? Life cycle analysis
LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS (LCA)
WHAT IS LCA- life cycle analysis ?
A life cycle assessment accounts for all the resources consumed and the substances emitted during the
life cycle of your product. Resources can be energy carriers like electricity and fuels, or materials and
chemicals. Substances emitted can be greenhouse gases emitted to air or phosphate contributing to the
pollution of water bodies.

  • 4. ABOUT VIETNAM GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL (VGBC)
  • 5. 1,5°C TARGET – REMAINING CARBON BUDGET To limit global warming to 1.5 C – a threshold the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) suggests – carbon neutrality by 2050 is essential. This target is also laid down in the Paris agreement signed by 195 countries
  • 6. • Carbon neutrality means having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in carbon sinks. • Removing carbon oxide from the atmosphere and then storing it is known as carbon sequestration. • In order to achieve net zero emissions, all worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will have to be counterbalanced by carbon sequestration.   • 17. WHAT IS LCA- life cycle analysis ? A life cycle assessment accounts for all the resources consumed and the substances emitted during the life cycle of your product. Resources can be energy carriers like electricity and fuels, or materials and chemicals. Substances emitted can be greenhouse gases emitted to air or phosphate contributing to the pollution of water bodies.
