wearing them and not feel like the spectacle are
strange
The spectacle do not sit on the child’s cheeks and
cause pressure marks and discomfort.
The spectacles should not be higher than the
eyebrows or wider than the face
4. Win the parents -
The child is only going to convey his liking or disliking of the
frame , it is the parents who would be giving the approval for
the final spectacles.
While discussing the option use sentences like – ‘this frame
and these lenses would the spectacles more
comfortable/safe/UV protected/ for your child’s eyes.
‘WIN THE CHILD’ is also very important for the spectacle
dispensing.
5. Choosing the Frame -
The spectacle frame should not be too big or too small.
Understand the requirement , read the prescription for any
special requests like centration , UV protection , Hi-index ,
aspheric , bifocals , progressives etc.
It is better that we use the technical knowledge to select few
frames based on the requirement keeping in mind the
favorite color and designs.
8. (1) Safety-
The spectacles should be safe for the child’s precious part of
eyes.
Frame -
Plastic frames are better suited than metal frames.
Saddle or large pads bridges would provide better stability
to the frame.
Memory material would to better to keep the frame in
shape in the long run.
9. Lenses -
Lenses have to be high impact
resistance .
Stress free polycarbonate or Trilogy
lenses would be indicated.
Parents have to be educated about
the safety aspects of child’s eye wear
so that they would be convinced
about buying impact resistance
lenses
10. (2) Comfort -
Frame -
Should be comfortable to be wear.
Avoid giving smaller frame which eventually would feel tight
and uncomfortable.
Parents may have tendency to choose large frame because
the ‘child is growing up fast’.
Avoid this as the large frames would require more
decentration of lenses and would increase the over all weight
of the spectacles.
11. A snug fit with perfect bend would make the frame stable and comfortable to
wear.
The temples could be comfort cables, to avoid frame accidentally falling down.
Some dispensers feel that an elastic band should be recommended.
12. Lenses -
Lenses should be light weight.
Lesser specific gravity would mean lighter
lenses.
Avoid glass at all costs.
Polycarbonate , CR39 are preferred .
If the frame is selected as per the child’s
IPD the lenses would end up being lightest
14. (3) UV Protection -
A property of pediatric spectacles which is a must have for
children’s eye wear.
All the times they are exposed to lot of UV rays.
Because children most often play outside and go to school or
even for vacations.
Maximum damage due to UV rays , occurs at this age as the
exposure is more.
Polycarbonate offers protection upto 385nm and
16. (4)Allergies -
Frames especially metal can cause allergy.
If metal frames have to be used it is better to use NICKEL
free frames through they may be little more expensive.
Cellulose Acetate frames may not cause any allergies but
external materials absorbed by frame can produce rashes.
Frame should be of good quality and non absorbent.
17. (5) Clear vision -
If the refraction and power dispensed is correct then the
vision would be clear .
18. (6) Cosmetics -
Choose lenses with higher index and asphericity for better
cosmesis.
Use of anti-reflection coated (scratch resistant) lenses is
recommended.
In case of high plus powers ordering reduced diameter
lenses with asphericity would get the best finished product.
High minus lenses could be high index with aspheric.
Both cases Anti- reflection coating is recommended.
19. Sports glasses for children -
Ball sports or judo are the particularly challenging for
children wearing spectacles.
There are also special sports spectacles for children that,
depending on the model, are made completely out of plastic
, with temples that do not have hinges.
An elastic strap on the temples that is worn around the back
of the head can also ensure that spectacles sit securely.
21. Special Instructions -
Children may not take as good care of spectacles as adults.
So explain the proper procedure to clean the spectacle
lenses and even the frames.
Sweating would spoil the lenses and hence wash the lenses
and frame in running tap water.
For dry cleaning use of microfiber cloth after blowing the dry
dust should be encouraged.
Regular reviewing and frequently change of glasses should
be recommended due to the possibility of frequent scratches
and mishandling of frames in children.
