BTEC Production: Intro to the Tech
The Foyer – Reception area (Entrance area for audience).
Front of House – School canteen (Gives audience access to refreshments and merchandise.
Accessible by both staff and audience members. May also be the front of the proscenium
arch).
Auditorium – School hall (Where the seating for the audience is, in front of the stage. Grey
curtains hide the walls and windows so light can’t be reflected/enter the hall. Seats get
pulled out and put into place).
Light, Sound and Visual Area (AKA The Box) – Behind the auditorium seating (Out of the
audience’s sight).
The Rig – Up on the ceiling (Also out of audience’s sight. Lights and air conditioning attached
to it).

Backstage – A bit in the wings, a small area behind the stage, and the Gym (For
actors/actresses, dancers etc to wait for their turn to go onstage. Depending on the theatre,
can include dressing rooms due to the size of the space behind the stage that acts as
backstage. School requires use of the gym because of limited space).
Flies – Above the stage (Holds lights and small mics, as well as other things. Hidden by
Borders).
Front Tabs – Red curtains in front of the proscenium arch.
Legs – Hides the wings from sight (also known as flats if they’re made of food and not fabric)

Cyclorama – Backscreen (has to be stretched and really tight)
Trap Door – Indicated by a white ‘X’ on the stage (Lifts up, allows access to under the stage)
Flight Case – Holds and protects heavy and fragile equipment like lighting, music
instruments, etc.

DSM/Prompt Corner – Where Deputy Stage Manager sits during performance (Stage Left.
Contains controls and a screen. The Box has a camera so the DSM can see the stage from
the POV of the audience. Headset and mic used to contact cast and/or orchestra)
Store – Out of sight, to the stage right (tabs, equipment, etc are held in that room)
