General stage terms definitions
Front of house- The area open to the public before a show where refreshments can be
bought and the shows merchandise, it is much like a foyer.
Foyer- the room that the public wait in, often adjacent to the auditorium
Auditorium- The room in which the show is performed.
The Box- The area in which the sound and lighting technicians work.
Lighting rig- The metal work attached to the ceiling that lights are attached and positioned
to.
Proscenium- Frames the action of a stage, it can be squared or arched.
Flies- A system of ropes and pulleys above the stage that allow items/people to be
lifted or lowered.
Tabs- curtains that hang at the sides of the stage perpendicular to the proscenium
arch to hide the wings.
Boarders- Curtains to hide the flies
Legs- narrow drapes to hide the wings.
Flats- Permanent wings, often made out of something like wood.
Cyclorama- Curved, stretched white cloth for light projections.
Trapdoor- Hatch in the stage floor.
Flight case- For storing lights and other equipment

Tracks- The rails that curtains go on.
DSM corner/Prompt corner- Usually positioned stage left the DSM calls the show
from here.
Gauze- Curtains used to often provide dramatic or moody effects, or to hide the
stage.
Backdrop- A piece of cloth hung across the back of the stage in order to be used as
scenery.
