3. What is Relative Clause?
• A relative clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun
and gives more information and supporting details about a
noun, and that dependent clause must be followed by a main
clause.
• A relative clause is also called an adjective clause.
4. Introducing Relative Pronouns
• Who – refers to people
• Which – refers to both animals and objects
• That – used to refer to both people, objects or animals (informal)
• Whom – used an adjective clause that already has a subject
• Whose – refers to the possession of people, things or animals
6. How to identify an Adjective Clause
• Adjective clause is used to combine two sentences
together into one that contains an adjective clause.
Ex: I know a woman. She works at the bank.
I know a woman who works at the bank.
(relative clause)
7. How to Use Relative Pronouns
• Who => for people
• As an object!
Ex: He needs a woman. She understands his heart.
He needs a woman who understands his heart.
• As a subject!
Ex: Pisey is friendly. She studies English at Aii.
=> Pisey who studies English at Aii is friendly.

• Which => animals or objects
Ex: I bought a book. It talks about Khmer history.
I bought a book which talks about Khmer history.
Ex: Ford is located in the U.S. It is one of the world’s richest vehicle
companies.
=> Ford which is one of the world’s richest vehicle companies is located
in the U.S.
9. How to Use Relative Pronouns
• Whom: for people (when there is already a subject in the relative
clause.)
Ex: Piseth married a girl. He loves her so much.
=> Piseth married a girl whom he loves so much.
Ex: Sean can speak 10 languages. I have known him for 5 years.
=> Sean whom I have known for 5 years can speak 10 languages.
10. How to Use Relative Pronouns
• Which: for objects or animals (can also be used when there is already a
subject in the adjective clause)
Ex: Nissan GTR is a sport car. It is very fast.
=> Nissan GTR is a sport car which is very fast.
Ex: A puppy is 2 weeks old. It has a cute face.
A puppy which has a cute face is 2 weeks old.
Ex: The research paper was written in English. Mr. Sam wrote it last year.
=> The research paper which Mr. Sam wrote last year was written in
English.
