Introduction
â—Ź As managers, it is your responsibility to ensure employees are provided
with appropriate tools and training to be successful.
This training will help you to determine the best approach for creating a collaborative
training model in your company.
â—Ź Purpose: Provide you with tools to effectively implement social learning.
â—Ź Objectives:
â—‹ Evaluate social learning: professional advantages and benefits/limitations.
○ Evaluate four social media sites: pro’s/con’s and features for social
learning.
Social Learning Through Social Media
â—Ź Social Learning
â—‹ A self-motivated and self-directed social learning process that allows us to learn with and from
others passively and actively, formally and informally, synchronously and asynchronously (Reed,
et al., 2010)
â—Ź Social Media
â—‹ Tools to share ideas, goals, and questions synchronously or asynchronously such as
“communication (such as blogs), collaboration (such as wikis), communities (such as Facebook),
reviews and opinions (such as Amazon reader reviews), and multimedia (such as YouTube)”
(Bozarth, 2010, p. 9). These tools encourage continuous feedback, collaboration, and reflection
by providing up-to-date information in a variety of formats while removing barriers to learning
such as geography, time zones, socio-economic levels, and ages (Kind & Evans, 2015).
Social Learning Through Social Media
Barriers and Remedies
â—Ź Lack of Time (due to understaffing or
workload)
â—‹ Set aside time (during shift or week)
â—Ź Weak Learning Culture
â—‹ Set a precedence, make a learning culture
â—Ź Poor Leadership
â—‹ Take charge of the social media program
â—Ź Fear (of Change, Technology, or Other)
â—‹ Embrace it, practice, adapt and overcome
Ethical Dilemmas and Resolutions
â—Ź Inaccuracy of Information
â—‹ Ensure accuracy of released information
â—Ź Confidentiality and Privacy
â—‹ Do not share company secrets or coworker
information
â—Ź Boundaries (Work/Home/School)
â—‹ If you would not say it out loud, do not post it.
Be professional
â—Ź Spamming, Bullying, and Bashing
â—‹ Chain letters, rumors, and negativity do not
belong on the company intranet
Social Learning Through Social Media
Effect on trainer role
Everyone becomes a mentor and learner
through sharing, collaboration, and co-creation
by sharing ideas and best practices, thus
enabling social media to enhance learning.
(ShareKnowledge, 2018)
Importance of Social Learning
Organizations tend to place a low importance
on social learning because they fear that
employees will spend more time posting than
working.
To address that fear organizations can
Set Social Media Policy.
Create a visible “best practices”
infographic.
BUSINESS ISSUES AND
STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS
THROUGH SOCIAL LEARNING
A. Social Learning Effects on Organizations’
Goals and Objections:
â– Facilitate interaction, collaboration, and
active involvement
â– Good communication between employees
results in reciprocal trust between them that
will lead to improved overall organization’s
performance.
BUSINESS ISSUES AND STRENGTHENING
RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH SOCIAL
LEARNING
B. Indicators of Success of Social Learning in an Organization
â—Ź Klout index: measures quantity: the employees activity and
responding.
● Measuring quality: use the “K” to mark the posts that inspired you
C. Resource Allocation Affect the Effectiveness of Social Learning in an
Organization
â—Ź Resources are distributed equally among employees for
transparent exchange of knowledge
â—Ź a support system to enable you to adopt and use the social
learning tool in the organization.
BUSINESS ISSUES AND STRENGTHENING
RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH SOCIAL LEARNING
D. Social Learning Environment Establish Employees’
Perception of Hierarchy
â– Encourages free communication between employees disregarding the
limitations of their positions in the organization.
â– Top management set the tone
â– Middle management elaborate on the shared information
E. Social Learning Effect on Relationships Among Diverse
Skill Set
â– Social learning environment encourages employees to freely share
their ideas
â– Non formal discussions enable diverse ideas to surface
â– Different employees with different skills collaborate to create unique
outcome
SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY
â—ŹProfessionalism-
o Every member of the team is responsible for
representing themselves in a
professional manner at all times.
â—ŹLegal/Liability Concerns-
The following are of special concern when using social media for company use:
â—‹Computer Hacking
â—‹Copyright and Fair Use
â—‹Privacy Policy
â—‹Defamation
â—ŹMisconduct- Discrimination/Harassment will not be tolerated.
Social Media Tools
> Facebook
â—Ź Description: This is the largest social network in the world. This network has the capacity and
ability to connect friends, families, and colleagues from across the globe and allow them to interact in
a way. They each get the opportunity to broadcast their lives and share their experiences with each
other through posts, and such.
â—Ź Benefits:
â—‹ Allows people to maintain relationships with people who are not always close by .
â—‹ People can reconnect with old friends and find people that they may have disconnected from.
○ Some individuals who don’t watch the news can get information and read articles on this site.
â—Ź Limitations:
â—‹ Many people develop and addiction to this website because of how much time they spend
online.
○ It gives people a sense of false realities because they look at other’s lives so much.
â—‹ It can cause people to be unfocused when at work.
â—Ź Organizational Application on Behalf of Social Learning Examples:
â—‹ People can set up groups where they can share information and hold discussions with other
people who share interests about certain topics.
> YouTube
â—Ź Description: This tool is specifically used to broadcast videos and it is the most popular video
distribution site used in social media. Users can upload and share videos, watch entertainment
videos, music videos, as well as academic lectures.
â—Ź Benefits:
â—‹ It is a free online resource that provides people with many videos that cover all topics.
â—‹ People can watch infinite videos about the topics that interest them at the click of a button.
â—Ź Limitations:
â—‹ Since YouTube is a public site, if you upload videos, your privacy is not so protected and you
cannot filter the people who watch your videos.
○ It gives people a sense of false realities because they look at other’s lives so much.
â—‹ It can cause people to be unfocused when at work.
â—Ź Organizational Application on Behalf of Social Learning Examples:
â—‹ Groups can create and upload videos that match the specific needs of the people in their group
and spread these videos among employees or learners
and such. By creating their own videos these organizations can
then use these videos for professional development.
> Twitter
â—Ź Description: This outlet allows for a blogging environment to exist, when users can customize their
own profiles with short and concise posts and images they
choose to upload, as well as chatting with other people. Users
can follow who they choose to and exchange ideas across this
platform.
â—Ź Benefits:
â—‹ It is a quick and accessible social media tool that can be accessed anywhere.
â—‹ People can share and receive information from fellow individuals, even those who are not
anywhere near them.
â—‹ Communication is enhanced and can improve among people.
â—Ź Limitations:
â—‹ Once your post it out there, there is no privacy ultimately, even if your account is on private.
â—Ź Organizational Application on Behalf of Social Learning Examples:
â—‹ Users can engage in discussion with other about topics that are circulating around the network,
and by having these discussions, individuals can learn from each other. Organizations can also
promote themselves and further engage with their audience.
> LinkedIn
â—Ź Description: This is a platform used specifically for professional networking. Users can customize
their accounts according to their resumes and such, where employers can then browse among these
professionals to seek hires.
â—Ź Benefits:
â—‹ It provides quick online networking between professionals seeking for jobs.
â—‹ Employers can access hundreds of applicants at the touch of a button.
â—Ź Limitations:
â—‹ Setting up a profile takes a great amount of effort and time, it is not as quick as it may seem.
â—‹ There is a big privacy concern since others can view your profile as well.
â—Ź Organizational Application on Behalf of Social Learning Examples:
â—‹ By driving learners to create LinkedIn profiles and engage in professional networking, they are
in a way also engaging in social learning, which is for their benefit. Nowadays, having a social
presence is almost required and LinkedIn is a way for
professionals to connect with one another. Employers
might also consider having their employees be present on
this site to further expand social learning in the workplace.
Review
Keep in mind:
a.) always be professional;
b.) if you have nothing positive to say, do not post it;
c.) Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn are tools, use them responsibly;
d.) social learning happens with or without social media, and is not always announced as learning; and
e.) social media, when used properly in the workplace, can help solve immediate issues, give two way
communication between customers and businesses, and eliminates barriers such as geography, skill set, and age.
