• Becoming aware of the nuances and meanings of a language is part
of language learning
• By increasing students’ language awareness the student are better
able to understand, appreciate and use the language

• ‘An understanding of the human
faculty of language and its role
in thinking, learning and social

BACKGROUND
• The concept of language awareness is not new. Van Essen,
Donmall and Van lier are conceptulised this idea of Language
awareness in different ways
• It is closely related to the whole language movement which
started in the US in the 1970
LANGUAGE AWARENESS IN CLASSROOM
• Organisational structure
• Grammatical Structure
• Style and tone
• Word choice
• Reading/ Pronounce Strategies
HOW CAN STUDENT’S LANGUAGE AWARENESS BE
INCREASED?
• Learn concept in SL through an Examination of their own
language’s structure
• Word etymology can also be used to see patterns in word
formation and related meanings
CONTINUE
• Many Activities that can done
to help students in increasing
their own language awareness.
E.g , Synonyms and expression
• Open Discussion
• Language variation or Dialect
CURRENT AND FUTURE TRENDS AND DIRECTIONS
• Language Awareness has created an identity that assures it a place
within educational linguistics.
• A number of researchers are now looking at this Language studies
including awareness and linguistic
CONCLUSION
• Language awareness is part of what the teachers, choose
to teach. As language teacher know, there is much more
to a language than simply knowing vocabulary and
grammar; reproducing them in either written or oral form.

Presentation On language Awareness

  • 2. LANGUAGE LEARNING • Becoming aware of the nuances and meanings of a language is part of language learning • By increasing students’ language awareness the student are better able to understand, appreciate and use the language

  • 4. INTRODUCTION • What is language awareness? • Background • How do we build awareness in the SL classroom? • How can student’s language awareness be increased? • Current and future trends and directions
  • 5. WHAT IS LANGUAGE AWARENESS? • ‘A person’s sensitivity to and conscious awareness of the nature of language and its role in human life’( Donmall) • ‘An understanding of the human faculty of language and its role in thinking, learning and social life’
  • 6. BACKGROUND • The concept of language awareness is not new. Van Essen, Donmall and Van lier are conceptulised this idea of Language awareness in different ways • It is closely related to the whole language movement which started in the US in the 1970
  • 7. LANGUAGE AWARENESS IN CLASSROOM • Organisational structure • Grammatical Structure • Style and tone • Word choice • Reading/ Pronounce Strategies
  • 8. HOW CAN STUDENT’S LANGUAGE AWARENESS BE INCREASED? • Learn concept in SL through an Examination of their own language’s structure • Word etymology can also be used to see patterns in word formation and related meanings
  • 9. CONTINUE • Many Activities that can done to help students in increasing their own language awareness. E.g , Synonyms and expression • Open Discussion • Language variation or Dialect
  • 10. CURRENT AND FUTURE TRENDS AND DIRECTIONS • Language Awareness has created an identity that assures it a place within educational linguistics. • A number of researchers are now looking at this Language studies including awareness and linguistic
  • 11. CONCLUSION • Language awareness is part of what the teachers, choose to teach. As language teacher know, there is much more to a language than simply knowing vocabulary and grammar; reproducing them in either written or oral form.
