Lesson Plan: Determining Occupational Safety and Health Practices
in Making Handicrafts
Grade Level: 8 Subject: Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE)
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the importance of occupational safety and health
practices in making handicrafts.
2. Identify potential hazards in the process of making handicrafts.
3. Apply safety measures to ensure a safe working environment
when making handicrafts.
4. Develop skills in using tools and equipment safely.
Standards:
1. Recognize the importance of safety and health practices in the
workplace (TLE-HE-8-1).
2. Identify potential hazards, risks, and safety measures in specific
work situations (TLE-HE-8-2).
3. Demonstrate proper use of tools, equipment, materials, and
processes in the creation of handicrafts (TLE-HE-8-3).
Materials:
Safety goggles
Gloves
Dust masks
Various handicraft materials (e.g., paper, glue, scissors, beads,
yarn)
Handicraft tools (e.g., scissors, hot glue gun, needle, pliers)
Procedure:
I. Introduction (10 minutes)
A. Engage students by showing them examples of different
handicrafts and ask them about the skills and materials required to
create them. B. Introduce the concept of occupational safety and
health practices in making handicrafts, emphasizing the importance of
personal safety and creating a safe working environment. C. State the
learning objectives for the lesson, connecting them explicitly to the
standards for TLE in the Philippines.
II. Identifying Hazards (20 minutes)
2. A. Divide the class into groups and provide each group with a set of
handicraft materials and tools. B. Instruct the groups to examine the
materials and tools and identify potential hazards associated with their
use. C. Facilitate a class discussion where each group shares their
findings. Guide the discussion to cover various hazards such as sharp
objects, hot surfaces, and toxic materials. D. Summarize the
discussion by creating a list of identified hazards on the board.
III. Safety Measures (30 minutes)
A. Present a PowerPoint or multimedia presentation that explains
common safety measures in making handicrafts, including the proper
handling of tools and materials, wearing safety gear, and creating a
clutter-free workspace.
B. Demonstrate and explain how to use safety goggles, gloves, and
dust masks correctly.
C. Distribute safety gear to each student, allowing them to practice
wearing and using them correctly.
IV. Hands-on Activity: Creating a Handicraft (40 minutes)
A. Divide the class into pairs or small groups and provide each group
with a handicraft project to work on (e.g., paper quilling, beadwork,
yarn crafts).
B. Instruct students to plan their project, considering the safety
measures discussed earlier.
C. Allow students to work on their projects while circulating the room
to ensure they are using tools and materials safely.
D. Encourage students to discuss and share safety tips within their
groups.
V. Reflection and Evaluation (10 minutes)
A. Gather the class together and ask students to reflect on their
experience.
B. Discuss how the safety measures contributed to a safer working
environment and improved the quality of their work.
C. Evaluate student learning by asking open-ended questions about
the hazards and safety measures covered in the lesson.
Connections to Learning Objectives:
The Introduction section engages students and sets clear
learning objectives that connect to the importance of safety and
health practices in the workplace.
3. The Identifying Hazards activity allows students to identify
potential hazards, aligning with the objective of understanding
potential risks in making handicrafts.
The Safety Measures section ensures students apply safety
measures to create a safe working environment, fulfilling the
objective of applying safety measures.
The Hands-on Activity provides an opportunity for students to
develop skills in using tools and equipment safely, aligning with
the objective of demonstrating proper tool use.
The Reflection and Evaluation section allows students to reflect
on their learning and connects to the objective of understanding
the importance of safety measures.
Connections to Standards:
Standard TLE-HE-8-1 is addressed through the Introduction
section, emphasizing the importance of safety and health
practices in the workplace.
Standard TLE-HE-8-2 is met through the Identifying Hazards
activity, where students identify potential hazards and discuss
safety measures.
Standard TLE-HE-8-3 is addressed in the Hands-on Activity
section, as students demonstrate the proper use of tools,
equipment, materials, and processes in creating handicrafts.
Engaging Learning Activities:
1. Group work in the Identifying Hazards section allows students to
actively participate and collaborate in examining materials and
tools for potential hazards.
2. The hands-on activity of creating a handicraft allows students to
apply their knowledge of safety measures and develop their
creativity and craftsmanship.
3. The Reflection and Evaluation section encourages students to
reflect on their learning experience, reinforcing their
understanding and promoting critical thinking.
