3. Problem Statement
• Since the advent of human civilization, society has
specified certain gender roles
• Taking care of the child is considered as the
responsibility of mother solely
• Difficult for women to manage both work and home in
this era of gender equality
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
4. Proposed Solution
• Reducing burden on women as a mother
• Allow women to contribute more towards the society
• Develop a system capable of soothing and monitoring
the baby itself
• Design a smart cradle, with distinctive features i.e
automatic swing (using cry detection), interactive toys
and two way communication
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
7. Implementation Steps
• Cry Detection: Classification of audio signal as either crying
or non-crying sample using raspberry pi 3
• Baby Soothing: Integration of different features in the cradle to
soothe the baby automatically
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
8. Methodology
• Voice activity detection around the cradle
• Classification of the detected voice as crying or non-
crying
• If cry is detected, rock the cradle for a particular time
• Again classify the sound around the cradle
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
9. Methodology (Contd.)
• If a cry is still detected, stop rocking of the cradle and
turn the toy on
• Again classify the sound around the cradle, and alert
the mother through text message if cry is detected
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
10. Applications
• Provide a smart solution for child care industry
• Help working women balance their work and domestic
chores
• Can be used in day care centers for the aid of human
beings
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
11. Audience
• Working women
• Young first time parents who are busy, stressful and
technology dependent
• In market there is no product who has exactly same
features as our product
• Our product is a standing competitor in the child care
industry
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
12. What we have done so far?:
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
• Classification of audio signals in MATLAB
• Computation of accuracy of training data in WEKA
• Classification of audio signals on python using
raspberry pi3
• Rocking of cradle through rpi3 using wiper motor
• Controlling the toy through rpi3
• Sending SMS to phone through rpi using GSM module
13. Results of Classification
• Accuracy of our cry detection system using KNN for
values of k ranging from 0 to 25
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
14. Hardware Developed
• Developed the mechanical structure of the cradle
• Controlled rocking of cradle from Rpi through wiper
motor
• Integration of toy in the cradle
• Integration of GSM module with Rpi3
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
16. Working of the cradle
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
17. Future Deliverables
• Develop our own android app to control the cradle
remotely through mobile phone
• Monitor the baby remotely through the app
• Moisture level detection using moisture sensor through
raspberry pi3
• Two way communication between cradle and the
parents
Undergraduate Final Year Project Presentation
Dated: 1st April, 2018
18. Summary
This Automatic Baby Soothing and Monitoring System
detects voice around the cradle, classifies it and decides
whether to rock the cradle or not, based on the
classification. Moreover, if crying doesn’t stop, it employs
music and interactive toys; to soothe the baby. It also
allows the mother to control certain features of cradle via
a specially developed android app. In this way, it aspires
to bring certain amount of relief to mother, and help her
balance work and domestic life.
