What is DRILL WORK?
Mathematics is a subject of practice and exercise. So drill work has an
important place in teaching Mathematics. Making use of drills we
expect speed and accuracy in solving mathematical problems. Drill
work is based on psychological principles such as learning by doing and
the law of exercise.
IMPORTANCE OF DRILL WORK:
• It develops confidence and a sense of achievement in the
students.
• In drill work learned material can be retained for a long time.
• This technique of learning is good for beginners.
• It develops speed and accuracy in the learning of mathematics.
• With the help of this technique memory of the child can be
checked.
DISADVANTAGES OF DRILL WORK :
• Drill work should be an interesting affair and not become
unpleasant and boring.
• It should be brief and distributed over some time.
• In this work, the student should be given sufficient opportunity
and a proper atmosphere.
HOW TO MAKE DRILL EFFECTIVE
• Drill work should be an interesting affair and not become
unpleasant and boring.
• It should be brief and distributed over some time.
• In this work, the student should be given sufficient opportunity
and a proper atmosphere.
INFFICIENT OF DRILL METHODS IN
TEACHING MATH FOR CHILDREN
INEFFICIENT OF DRILL METHOD IN TEACHING
MATHEMATICS:
• As well as we know, math always complicated and consist of many abstract things.
Sometimes, all of the problem make student lack of confident and feel no interest
to mathematics. For that reason, teachers need some methods that require student
to do an exercise, read, or writing in many times until they are usual to use any
theorem in problem solving. The repetition methods or known as drill, is very useful
to improve math skills of student. But, in fact math is not only about solving every
equation and pro blem that has given for those of students, so we can’t hold on
this methods so long. According to theobservation of Development Mathematical
Thinking Institute, drill is also improving the basic skills of math for children in
calculation, but not for the logic. The influence of this method such as, student just
only can count but not relating the problem and solution, this method make an
assumption that math is only about calculation, and also they will not have good
basic theory in solve the problem, so I think teachers need another teaching method
such as fact fluency to improve the mathematic skill of students. Drill is an old
method in teaching mathematics especially in arithmetic. The purpose of this
method is student able to calculate speedily and accurately. In each drill session,
there must be at least 6 –
• 6 – 20 questions which must be answered correctly and efficiently. Before the
students trying to calculate, teacher must give an instruction about basic ways
to solve the problem first. Students try to solve the problem in some durations,
for checking the speed and accurate of the answer. Make a target for each
question, for example for one problem student must be able to solve in 40
seconds normally. According to the process of preparing teaching with drill that
has spent much time before the student start to study. So, the first missed of
this method is waste the time. Even that time is no the matter in learning, but
schools has a standardization and indicator that must be reached by students
while learning process. In the indicators is also consist of how many times that
will be spent for some lesson and the lesson plan have already plot on the right
schedule, so, if the learning process is out of time, it influenced another
lesson plan in the plan. With the other words, drill is inefficient for timing
while teaching
-
Something that you need to know, in the first of research in psychology by Thorndike,
drill method was forming to the animal to prove the behavior theorem. In that
research, Thorndike wanted to see the response of the animal with something that
always gave for them frequently. But, in the following time, this method is applied to
the human, especially to the learning system. His purpose is simplifying the complex
problem in teaching mathematics in the schools and the obstacle which student faced
with using new learning method. Thorndike applied drill teaching for children in
elementary schools. He reasoned that students in the elementary age were not yet
able to deduce the rules of mathematics. So, he focused on drilling math question to
the children, by giving durations about 10 minutes and 100 problems. The drill is
consist of basic math (sum, division, multiplying), as a result, student were success
solve all the problems that he gave for them. By that story, we can look at what kind
of math questions that he gave for the students and what is the level of students in
learning process
What
will they do, if they only knowing about solve an equation as soon as possible and poo
r basic knowledge about math but unable to connect it into the real condition of math?
However, almost all
of students don’t have any problem with counting, but they are bad in finding the simpl
est solution by
connecting what they have learned with their own way solution. Believe it or not, the dr
ill method isolate students skill in math. For example, in the class, they are taught by t
eacher about step of solution
then they start doing same as the teacher have taught for a lot of exercises until they fi
nd the plot of
solution that must be taken for similar question. Now see, every similar question or tes
t can be solved by students by using same step for many times.
. In real condition, almost all students have same problem in math. They have known about 8Ă— 9 because
of drill and remembering concept, but they don’t know that they can simply add 1× 8 for 9 times or
another ways. It’s better for the teacher ask ing their students to do some exploration in math
calculation, so they will feel more interest in math and can improve their sense in solve another kind of
math question. We know that theory is totally different when we are applying it in the real condition. In
fact, not every student got the point of drill teaching. Some of the students is able to follow the stream,
but not for the others. Based on the scoring check before and after applying drill method, some students
show the decreasing grades. The result is prove to us that student has their own way in solving the
problem before which has make them more confident to study. When drill does not working for the
students in the class, that’s time teacher need another strategy. Moreover ,“If drill doesn't work as well
as the approach first advocated by the meaning theorists over 70 years ago, why aren't classrooms using
a meaning-based approach to teaching fact fluency?”(Strother, 2010, p.3). As long as we know about drill
is it always related to counting, though math is not only about calculate something. So, according
toMathematical Learning Institute, it’s better to teach student with another strategy to improve
student’sskill in math. Student needed a learning method that connected with fact of mathematics. It is
very important to build basic concept of math. Not only build the basic skills, fact learning method is
teaching abouthow to solve any problem which student doesn’t know, with all the information or fact
that student have and know. By learning with fact fluency, student will be more
Many ways that can be done by teachers to improve the skill of mathema
tics of students. But,surely, students must be preferred to study with effici
ent method and interesting and drill is not a solution.Drill can make stude
nts get bored by many exercises that have given for them. Not only borin
g, but alsodrill is isolate students skill in solve the problem in mathematic
s and by drill method, student just onlythink about solve every questions,
however math is not like that. Moreover, students will have a poor basic i
n mathematics because they are satisfy enough with finishing a math eq
uation speedily andaccurately, without connect to the real application of t
he theory. So, as the solution, the teachers should beable to teach with a
nother ways that more effective and efficient to improve the skill of mathe
matics ofchildren, and learning by fact fluency is the answer because it re
quires the student to find what they
CONCLUSION
• This study is a survey to examine the effectiveness of drilling methods in
improving the student's control of animal titles. Based on the data and
findings that have been made, it is evident that the drill and training
practice method is a more effective method of teaching and learning
than traditional methods. Although respondents consist of gender, family
economic status and the achievement of different mid-year exams,
these characteristics do not influence the mastery of students when
studying this subject. In today's information technology era, educators
need to be conscious of choosing or applying appropriate teaching
methods in their teaching process in order to achieve educational
excellence. From the research done, the finding shows that drilling
and training method is effective in teaching and learning. The
practice of exercising plays an impressive role in teaching and learning

The influence of this method such as, student just only can count but not relating the problem and solution, this method make an assumption that math is only about calculation, and also they will not have good basic theory in solve the problem, so I think teachers need another teaching method such as fact fluency to improve the mathematic skill of students. Drill is an old method in teaching mathematics especially in arithmetic. The purpose of this method is student able to calculate speedily and accurately. In each drill session, there must be at least 6 –
  • 10. • 6 – 20 questions which must be answered correctly and efficiently. Before the students trying to calculate, teacher must give an instruction about basic ways to solve the problem first. Students try to solve the problem in some durations, for checking the speed and accurate of the answer. Make a target for each question, for example for one problem student must be able to solve in 40 seconds normally. According to the process of preparing teaching with drill that has spent much time before the student start to study. So, the first missed of this method is waste the time. Even that time is no the matter in learning, but schools has a standardization and indicator that must be reached by students while learning process. In the indicators is also consist of how many times that will be spent for some lesson and the lesson plan have already plot on the right schedule, so, if the learning process is out of time, it influenced another lesson plan in the plan. With the other words, drill is inefficient for timing while teaching
  • 11. - Something that you need to know, in the first of research in psychology by Thorndike, drill method was forming to the animal to prove the behavior theorem. In that research, Thorndike wanted to see the response of the animal with something that always gave for them frequently. But, in the following time, this method is applied to the human, especially to the learning system. His purpose is simplifying the complex problem in teaching mathematics in the schools and the obstacle which student faced with using new learning method. Thorndike applied drill teaching for children in elementary schools. He reasoned that students in the elementary age were not yet able to deduce the rules of mathematics. So, he focused on drilling math question to the children, by giving durations about 10 minutes and 100 problems. The drill is consist of basic math (sum, division, multiplying), as a result, student were success solve all the problems that he gave for them. By that story, we can look at what kind of math questions that he gave for the students and what is the level of students in learning process
  • 12. What will they do, if they only knowing about solve an equation as soon as possible and poo r basic knowledge about math but unable to connect it into the real condition of math? However, almost all of students don’t have any problem with counting, but they are bad in finding the simpl est solution by connecting what they have learned with their own way solution. Believe it or not, the dr ill method isolate students skill in math. For example, in the class, they are taught by t eacher about step of solution then they start doing same as the teacher have taught for a lot of exercises until they fi nd the plot of solution that must be taken for similar question. Now see, every similar question or tes t can be solved by students by using same step for many times.
  • 13. . In real condition, almost all students have same problem in math. They have known about 8Ă— 9 because of drill and remembering concept, but they don’t know that they can simply add 1Ă— 8 for 9 times or another ways. It’s better for the teacher ask ing their students to do some exploration in math calculation, so they will feel more interest in math and can improve their sense in solve another kind of math question. We know that theory is totally different when we are applying it in the real condition. In fact, not every student got the point of drill teaching. Some of the students is able to follow the stream, but not for the others. Based on the scoring check before and after applying drill method, some students show the decreasing grades. The result is prove to us that student has their own way in solving the problem before which has make them more confident to study. When drill does not working for the students in the class, that’s time teacher need another strategy. Moreover ,“If drill doesn't work as well as the approach first advocated by the meaning theorists over 70 years ago, why aren't classrooms using a meaning-based approach to teaching fact fluency?”(Strother, 2010, p.3). As long as we know about drill is it always related to counting, though math is not only about calculate something. So, according toMathematical Learning Institute, it’s better to teach student with another strategy to improve student’sskill in math. Student needed a learning method that connected with fact of mathematics. It is very important to build basic concept of math. Not only build the basic skills, fact learning method is teaching abouthow to solve any problem which student doesn’t know, with all the information or fact that student have and know. By learning with fact fluency, student will be more
  • 14. Many ways that can be done by teachers to improve the skill of mathema tics of students. But,surely, students must be preferred to study with effici ent method and interesting and drill is not a solution.Drill can make stude nts get bored by many exercises that have given for them. Not only borin g, but alsodrill is isolate students skill in solve the problem in mathematic s and by drill method, student just onlythink about solve every questions, however math is not like that. Moreover, students will have a poor basic i n mathematics because they are satisfy enough with finishing a math eq uation speedily andaccurately, without connect to the real application of t he theory. So, as the solution, the teachers should beable to teach with a nother ways that more effective and efficient to improve the skill of mathe matics ofchildren, and learning by fact fluency is the answer because it re quires the student to find what they
  • 15. CONCLUSION • This study is a survey to examine the effectiveness of drilling methods in improving the student's control of animal titles. Based on the data and findings that have been made, it is evident that the drill and training practice method is a more effective method of teaching and learning than traditional methods. Although respondents consist of gender, family economic status and the achievement of different mid-year exams, these characteristics do not influence the mastery of students when studying this subject. In today's information technology era, educators need to be conscious of choosing or applying appropriate teaching methods in their teaching process in order to achieve educational excellence. From the research done, the finding shows that drilling and training method is effective in teaching and learning. The practice of exercising plays an impressive role in teaching and learning
