Dharmavaram saris are woven in the town of Dharmavaram, Andhra Pradesh, which is known for its mulberry and non-mulberry silk production. It takes approximately 8 days for two weavers to complete a 6-meter sari. The process involves purchasing high quality cocoons, degumming and dyeing the silk yarn, pre-weaving preparations like warping and sizing, and weaving with traditional pit looms. Dharmavaram saris are unique for their twisted two-color design and use of computer-aided jacquard looms to efficiently produce customized patterns.

3. Weaving: It takes nearly 8 days for weaving a sari by two weavers to get complete sari
of 6 meters. The number of process involved in getting Dharmavaram sari
Purchase of raw material
Maintenance of quality
Degumming of the purified silk
Plying of yarn
Dyeing of yarn
Drying of yarn
Pre – weaving process involved:-
Winding of the yarn into warp and weft
Sizing of the warp followed by weaving and cutting and folding
4. PURCHASE OF RAW MATERIAL:- Cocoons with very good quality are collected
from the rearers by following rearing techniques recommended/suggested by silk
scientists. Such cocoons stifled, cooked in the yarn.
DEGUMMING OF THE PURIFIED SILK:- Soda, ash and soap is used for removal
of natural gums.
PLYING OF YARN:- Plying is done to create a balanced yarn for converting it into a
sari.
DYEING OF YARN:- Using various acidic and basic dyes are used to get the desired
colours which is based on the liquid ratio, temperature and chemicals, pH, etc.
5. DRYING OF YARN:- After colouring the fabric it is dried on bamboo sticks within the
rooms and used to weave the sari by the interlocking weft method. the popular method is
using is jacquard weaving were in the design is loaded on the computer punched into a card
before loading it on the looms.
PRE-WEAVING PROCESS:- Shift bamboon and bobbin are used as warp while weft is
made of a pirn.
SIZING OF THE WARP:- For weaving suitability the warp extended is sprayed with rice
conjee. Weaving is done on pit looms which is followed by designing and cutting waste on
the market demand.
COLOURS:- To get a double shade that are accentuated by the colour boarder and pallu’s.
The Dharmavaram pattu silk sari woven in 2 colours giving it twisted effect which makes it
unique.

7. TOOL & MATERIAL: - The important implements and machineries used in
various stages of manufacturing a sari. For drying process dyes huge container
for boiling and iron rods for drying and used. While in designing and weft
formation fly shuttle are the main implements. While weaving a design is
plotted on a graph paper by punching them as jacquared which helps in
punching designs according to desired patterns. The design required for a sari
is initially drawn in a computer and ounched on a card, which are later loaded
in a jacquared in the looms.

9. FINISHING: - These are not only famous but also water to the needs of the
customers. The designer are decided by the designer according to the market or
customer needs. The cost of the sari varies according to the additional designs
with kundans, stones and chamkies.
