This PowerPoint presentation discusses communication, its types, and barriers. It defines communication as the process of sharing messages between people using channels, contexts, and culture. Verbal communication uses speaking, listening, writing and reading, while non-verbal communication uses gestures, facial expressions, body language, and other cues. Both have advantages like immediacy but also disadvantages like potential for misunderstanding. Barriers to communication include noise, assumptions, language differences and emotions. Overall, both verbal and non-verbal communication are important but can be improved by understanding potential barriers.
2. COMMUNICATION IS A PROCESS OF SHARING
AND CONVEYING MESSAGES OR INFORMATION
FROM ONE PERSON TO ANOTHER WITHIN
CHANNELS, CONTEXTS, MEDIA AND CULTURE.
COMMUNICATION IS A PROCESS, SO
THEREFORE IT WILL NOT BE SUCCESSFUL.
COMMUNICATION HAS ELEMENTS AS WELL.
4. WHAT IS VERBAL
COMMUNICATION?
VERBAL COMMUNICATION IS THE USE OF
SOUNDS AND WORDS TO EXPRESS MESSAGES.
THIS IS THE MOST COMMONLY USED TYPE OF
COMMUNICATION .
THIS CAN BE IN THE FORM OF SPOKEN AND
WRITTEN.
5. ADVANTAGES OF VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
COMMUNICATING VERBALLY IS MORE PERSONAL AND
INFORMAL.
IT MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT.
IT PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERACTION AND
FEEDBACK BETWEEN THE SPEAKER AND THE RECEIVER.
6. VERBAL COMMUNICATION HELPS CORRRECT
OUR MESSAGES ACCORDING TO THE FEEDBACK
AND NON-VERBAL CUES FROM THE LISTENER.
IT IS VERY FAST AND NON-EXPENSIVE.
7. DISADVANTAGES OF VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
A WORD USED UTTERED CAN’T BE TAKEN BACK.
IMPACT MAY BE SHORT LIVED.
MESSAGES EXPRESSED VERBALLY CAN BE
FORGOTTEN EASILY.
THERE IS NO LEGAL EVIDENCE OF ORAL
COMMUNICATION.
9. WHAT IS NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION?
It is a type communication wherein non-
verbal actions / devices are used to transmit a
message from one person to another.
Non-verbal communication is the
communication used by people who can’t
speak (mute), can’t hear (deaf), and those who
were not able to see (blind).
10. TYPES OF NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
VOICE – Pitch, speed,
and tone
GESTURES
FACIAL EXPRESSION
BODY MOVEMENTS
EYE CONTACT AND
MOVEMENTS
TIME
USE OF SENSES
PARALANGUAGE – The
manner of using voice
11. ADVANTAGES OF NON – VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
It can be used to communicate to other people
who may not be able to understand verbal
communication.
People who are unable to hear and speak can
understand better with the help of this form of
communication
12. Since non-verbal communication produces
little or no sound at all, it can be a safe way of
communication (if you do not want other
people to hear what you are saying to the
person/people you are talking to).
At some point non-verbal cues are more
meaningful than verbal ones.
13. DISADVANTAGES OF NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
Just like the verbal communication, non-verbal
communication may not be for all people. Other
people might misunderstand and give other meaning
to what you are telling them especially when you are
using hand signals.
14. Also, other people, especially in some
countries, may get offended if you use hand
signals to talk to them ( in some countries they
believe that pointing with one finger is
offensive, handing money or food with the left
hand is dirty, etc. ).
15. BARRIERS IN COMMUNICATION
NOISE
ASSUMPTIONS /
MISCONCEPTIONS
INAPPROPRIATE MEDIUM
LANGUAGE DIFFERENCES
EMOTIONS
POOR LISTENING SKILLS
16. OTHER BARRIERS IN COMMUNICATION
SEMANTIC BARRIER
ORGANIZATIONAL BARRIER
PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIER
17. VERBAL VS. NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
VERBAL COMMUNICATION MAY BE EASIER TO
UNDERSTAND FOR US BUT IT HAS DISADVANTAGES. THE SAME
WITH NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION WHICH IS THE EASIEST
WAY OF EXPRESSING MESSAGES FOR PEOPLE WITH
DISABILITIES BUT IT STILL HAVE ITS OWN DOWNSIDES. EITHER
VERBAL OR NON-VERBAL, COMMUNICATION IS STILL NEEDED
FOR ALL TO IMPOSE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND
EXPRESSING OF ONE’S FEELINGS AND BELIEFS.
