The Andrew Goodwin Theory
1. The Andrew Goodwin Theory
Goodwin states there is a system which you are able to identify genre and
many musicians use this method to capitalize on their intended genre, in hopes
of getting a particular audience.
Part of Goodwin’s system contains a 5 step method the audience should look
out for.
Thought beats - Being able to see the sound. The general structure of the
song, Chorus/Verses. Also the sound of the voice. If the voice is unique
enough the voice can create a trademark helping the star image. Along with
the voice, depending on the way the voice is presented, the viewer may get a
sense that the song is the story and the singer/artist the storyteller.
Narrative and performance - Very important. Sometimes the music isn't enough
for the audience. It doesn't give all that we need to be satisfied. It can also
change our opinion of the song. Much like how i've listened to a song and not
liked it but then seen the video and loved it. However Goodwin suggests that
music videos should coherent repeatable. Narrative and performance work
hand in hand make it harder for the audience to lose interest.
2. The star image - the selling tool in most cases.
Star imagining can be essential to most pop music videos.
Metta narrative which is a big story that describes the
development of the star over time. This is important in the
music production process over time.
The relation with the visuals and
the song. Illustrate, The sounds and the visuals
can match the lyrics in sync, this is usually a common trend
as it is easy to do and makes the video easy to shoot.
Amplify Lyrics or visuals can constantly be replayed so it
is drummed into the viewer's vision. Disjuncture The
meaning of the song is completely ignored.
3. Technical aspects. This is the basics. Things like how the film is shot, Movement, angles, mise-en scene, editing
sound special effects all that.
Colours play an important role. They can drastically change the mood and atmosphere of the film.
Cinematographers use this technique to create different feelings within a sequence and they work just as good in
a music video.
Location. Where the music video is set. This can be anywhere from the streets of LA to a planet way far from
earth. As long it's within the constructs of its own theme, anything goes.
Best thing to do in a music video is to try and match the beet. The more the music video is in sync with the song,
the more of an effect will reach the viewer. It's like a 2 part infomation stage. So you've got the song then the
video. We all long for the main chorus because that's the best bit. So in turn so does the vidoe need to be at its
best bit.
