1. Project Name: FMP
Project Author: Jonathan Mak
Backstory / What is the context of the task, what has happened before?
I have always been a passionate consumer on visual pieces, from the composition of a
short film or a web series, to Western and Japanese animations. This being the case, I
have experience in visual editing, in addition to editing audio. I have also gained
experience from being a: Camera Operator, DOP and Producer, giving me an insight on
how a visual piece is produced. From these experiences, I have learnt how to use
equipment that is needed to produce a visual piece: cameras, microphones and editing
software. Furthermore, I have been quick to adapt to new types of technological
equipment.
With this experience, I want to produce a trailer for a YouTube web series, in which it
shows how an individual combats problems that the youth faces.
Opportunity / What’s the core problem you’re aiming to solve? What opportunity does it
suggest?
With my concept, I am hoping that it is something my target audience is able to relate to,
and able to educate themselves, so that they may be able to overcome problems that they
might face. In addition to this, I am hoping that it is something that I can work towards, in
the near future. In response to one of the themes given, I could tap into the gaming
culture, since the technological advances in gaming are beyond imagination and is forever
changing.
Other YouTube series can be considered the competition, web series such as ‘Single By
30’ (Wong Fu Productions) and ‘Youth & Consequences’ (Anna Akana). My inspiration is
derived from those types of YouTube channels, who create short films or sketches, a
piece that is able to convey a message that can inform an audience.
Scope / What’s in? What’s out?
If successful, this piece would target the national audience of the UK, helping raise the
awareness for individuals to find who they are in terms of personality and hobbies. To
further support this, I would release this during a summer holiday, to increase viewership
as it allows my target audience to watch it.
Due to it being released on YouTube, it would enable the option for international
individuals to watch it, increasing viewership, in addition to this, I need to take into account
the time zones and release it to a time where most people would be able to see it.
Upon completion of the trailer to the web series, the concept for this could possibly result
in the pilot episode being produced for the future, forming the start of the web series, with
a more detailed plot line, more cast and crew members, sponsorships and a higher
budget.
2. Target Audience / Who are they? Where are they? Describe them
In hopes that my piece is relatable to them, my target audience would be someone similar
to an amateur gamer, someone who's still in education, who can just about afford a
platform to play games on, someone who isn't confident with themselves and is timid from
the outside world.
Gender: Male/Female
Age: 15-22 year olds
Personalities: Introverts, competitive, completionists
Hobbies: Gaming, Social Media consumer, Internet browsing
Income: Retail jobs or pocket money
Socio-economic group: C2-D
Geographic: UK
Constraints / What are the brand, technology, resource, people constraints?
Some limitations that I may come across could be something like:
Hiring a location where we can record in, and communication with the individual
that owns the location to look into hiring it.
Props and costumes that will require money, ranging from single to triple figures.
If I were to include third party music or visual representations, I would be required
to check the licensing behind it, making sure whether it is protected under
copyright law.
Equipment and software that is required to record the piece: Where might I get a
suitable camera and record audio? How much would it cost, whether to rent or to
purchase?
If money is a huge restraint? Am I able to get funding from something like a
sponsorship from a company? And whether the response to that funding would be
used efficiently.
Am I able to hire cast and crew members that are willing to put in the time to do
their job?
How long would it take me to compile the necessary paperwork required in the
shoot? For example: script, shot list, lighting plans storyboards, etc.
Assumptions / What are all our current assumptions. Both in terms of the target market
and our abilities
When it comes to equipment, hopefully, I would be able to plan what I need specifically for
certain scenes, if the location were to be big and open, would I need to hire a boom mic?
If it were to closed and small place, what camera set up would needed. This type of
equipment would be hired and provided by Global Academy. In hopes that there is stock
and that I book it in advance.
If I am not certain on locations, would filming outside be applicable? Would the weather
allow filming to be appropriate, in hopes that the equipment doesn't get damaged.
In hopes that if I were to use certain soundtracks that require permission from the
creators, would it help support my piece? Could I use certain tracks to convey certain
connotations?
To ensure that my piece turns out the way I wanted it too, I need to find the right people
who specialises in that role, for example, a camera operator who knows how to operate
the camera.
3. Resources / Who is in the core and extended team? What is needed to achieve success?
Crew members, is something I need, although I am capable of handling all these different
job roles, fulfilling it would be difficult by myself and could possibly result in a loss of time,
therefore, I would need:
Producer
Scriptwriter
Camera Op
Lighting
Continuity
Actors
Paperwork would be needed to guide me through to production, so that I am sure on what
I would be required for the recording of the trailer:
Script
Shot list
Storyboard
Continuity log
Lighting plans/Floor plan
Equipment is needed in order to produce the trailer for my piece, knowing how my
equipment is utilised beforehand would be ideal, to reduce time consumption:
Video camera
Audio recorder
Tripods
Editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition)
Lighting equipment
Props:
Laptops/Computers
Tables and chairs
Clothing/bags/accessories
Streaming platform: YouTube is ideal as
Success / How will you measure success? Describe the hard metrics of success.
Success for me, would be:
Creating a suitable work environment for my colleagues
Produce a video trailer that is 720p or higher, in the H.264 video type
Knowing how to use the equipment needed for production and post production
A successful upload to YouTube
Having a viewership for the trailer
Having my audience wanting to watch the web series, after watching the trailer
Have the duration of the trailer be around 1-2.30 minutes long
Having done all pre-production paperwork to lead up to production
Envision / What does success look like? Feel like? What will you be famous for? Where
will this project lead?
As this will be the first sketch or web series type content that I will produce, success to me
would be that if I were able to work well with my colleagues, to produce it to a standard
similar or better than existing YouTube Red series.
In hopes that this piece is produced correctly, success would mean if I were to benefit
from it, something like:
Sponsorships
Recognition by audience
Feedback from my audience
4. Something that I can look back at in the future and see how i’ve progressed
