Teenagers need more sleep than adults to stay healthy and cope with stress, with the National Sleep Foundation recommending 8-10 hours per night. Research also shows that increased social media use can lead to higher stress levels and negative emotional responses in young adults. Teens themselves report stress levels during the school year of 5.8 out of 10 on average, higher than the 5.1 reported by adults, with the pressures of school, family, social life and media culture contributing to increased stress levels in young people compared to the past.
