A case for positive psychology in pre service teacher education
Recent research in the area of positive psychology underlines the interconnected and highly correlated links between a positive emotional style and an individual’s psychological well-being. Cross sectional studies have shown that “happy” people tend to be more socially engaged and function better in their lives (Huppert, 2009). A meta-analysis of longitudinal studies has shown that happiness engenders the behaviours and beliefs that precede success in work and life (Lyubomirsky et al., 2005). Experimental studies using mood induction techniques have found that positive emotion significantly broadens attention (Rowe et al., 2007), enhances cognitive processing capabilities resulting in more creative and flexible problem solving (Isan & Daubman, 1984, Isan et al., 1987), increases taught action repertoires (Fredrickson & Branigan, 2005), improves learning (Bryan et al., 1996), boosts task performance and self-efficacy (Bryan & Bryan, 1991)
The principles and exercises of positive psychology have been taught to teachers in the Geelong Grammar school and to drill Sergeants in the US army resulting in positive outcomes to the well-being of both organisations (Seligman, 2012). Barsade (2002) would suggest this is aided by emotional contagion, the transfer of moods between groups through a process known as the ripple effect. Drawing on these research findings the study outlined here aims to examine the potential benefits of promoting the principles of positive psychology with pre-service secondary school teachers in Ireland.
Previous research suggests that training teachers to teach positive psychology techniques to students significantly reduces and even prevents symptoms of depression, hopelessness and anxiety while increasing optimism, engagement in learning, academic achievement and social skills (Brunwasser et al., 2009, Seligman et al., 2009). Teaching undergraduate pre-service teachers positive psychology may develop their openness to change as research suggests that positive psychological constructs such as optimism, hope, efficacy and resilience are malleable and open to positive change.

One of the primary causes of disability worldwide, depression affects a sizable percentage of the population. Persistent feelings of sadness and guilt, changes in sleeping patterns (insomnia or oversleeping), changes in appetite, decreased mental and physical energy, unusual irritability, inability to enjoy once-enjoyed activities, difficulty working, and thoughts of death or suicide are all symptoms that can be associated with any type of depressive disorder. These "down" symptoms alone may indicate a unipolar depressive disorder like dysthymia or severe depression if they are present. A person may be diagnosed with bipolar illness if they experience alternating spells of depression and euphoria. Adolescents and young adults increasingly have difficulties with their mental health (Poppen et al., 2016). An individual's mental health is something only they can fully comprehend, making it difficult for friends and loved ones to spot warning signs in time to intervene. Juvenile and young adult suicide is a major problem in today's world. A lack of life experiences, self-confidence, and faith in one's own skills contribute to the suicides of many young individuals.

Mental illness has been a problem that is affected the population for a long period and worryingly young people and adolescents are experiencing many effects that lead to some committing suicide. The stress that today's youth encounter nowadays is the most significant of all these issues, especially the pressure they receive based on their academic expectations and poor communication about their troubles to their parents. There is also a gap in the schools in terms of students receiving counseling services because there are limited professional counselors that attend to student needs. Despite the fact that psychologists claim stress could be caused by anything, many young people find the rapid pace of modern life to be a significant source of anxiety. to Anxiety and Depression.
Anxiety and depression have been prevalent issues in the United States and other parts of the world since the beginning of time. Anxiety and depression, which manifest in a variety of ways, can have a negative impact on people of all ages. Despite the fact that the first person to develop an addiction has never been identified, it is a widely held belief (Freeman, 2020). It has exacted a significant toll on the younger generation in recent years, which is especially concerning given the ongoing global epidemic. Many people do not prioritize their mental health and do not believe it should be one of their primary concerns. When, in fact, one's mental health is absolutely necessary in order to complete mundane tasks like going to class or working a job. As a result of increased focus on the topic from a wide range of fields, the state of people's mental health has been elevated to the status of a critical problem in today's society. Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, a sizable minority of people continue to believe that medication is the only way to treat mental health issues, despite the fact that the vast majority of people understand the importance of mental health (Ginsburg, 2020). This essay will coherently argue the alternative solutions to anxiety and depression. In that case, getting enough sleep and maintain a stable diet are the solutions other than medication that are discussed in below paragraphs.
Despite this, a significant number of people either do not give mental health the attention it deserves or do not believe it is all that important. Some people are also responsible for contributing to the stigma associated with mental illness. A little more than half of those polled in the General Social Survey in 2020 said they would not want a member of their family or a close friend to marry, work next to, or spend the night out with someone who had a mental illness (Knowles, 2020). People who have mental health issues may be hesitant to seek help because they are afraid of the stigma that may be attached to them if they do, which is a significant issue. The findings of this 2020 survey show that many American households continue to struggle with the concept of accepting mental health issues in their loved ones.
According to a 2020 statement from Zhang, "many people believe that people with mental illnesses are aggressive and dangerous." In fact, they are more likely to be assaulted or to injure themselves than they are to cause harm to others. People suffering from mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are less likely to seek alternative treatments and are more likely to rely on excessive medication if these stereotypes are perpetuated. This study aimed to determine the excessive use of screen gadgets among teenagers in Labangon, Cebu City, Philippines and its effects on their social and emotional functioning. Nine participants, two males and seven females aged 11-19, completed a survey and interview. Thematic analysis revealed that factors like opportunities for enjoyment, accessibility for schoolwork/leisure, social support, shared interests, and lack of family interaction contributed to excessive screen use. Both positive and negative effects on social and emotional functioning were identified. An intervention program was proposed to help participants balance screen time and develop healthy social and emotional skills.

Mental health problems are very worldwide among adolescent. This may be due to the truth that attending family members to a difficult time for many traditional and non traditional among adolescent. Adolescent after effecting high school are typically younger, depend on parents for financial support, and do not work or work part time. Thus, in addition to stress related to academic load, these adolescent may have to face the task of taking on more adult like responsibilities lacking having yet mastered the skills and cognitive maturity of adulthood. Stress, life events, past experiences and genetics all play a part in determining our mental health. Student life exposes individuals to risk factors affecting mental health including financial worries, periods of transition, substance use, parental pressure, culture shock and disconnection from previous supports. Descriptive research design and simple random sampling technique was adopted for the study. A sample size of 60 people was collected using planned interviews. Introduction
When discussing the influence of social media on mental health, first, it is pivotal to understand what social media is and the different dimensions of mental health. On the one hand, social media refers to how people can share information on various issues. Information can be shared in video, image, and audio, among other formats. The information shared via these platforms can benefit the users or have damaging consequences, such as mental issues and radicalization. Some popular social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Flickr. According to the Pew Research Center, over 84% of Americans will use social media in 2022, compared to 5% in 2002 (
Pew Research Center, 2022). The most used platforms in the United States are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Mental health is pivotal because it influences the decisions people make ad their participation in daily routines. Issues like trauma, abuse, child neglect, unemployment, and divorce can lead to mental health problems affecting individual functioning. Some dominant mental health issues include depression, sleeping disorders, stress, aggression, and self-denial. On the other hand, mental health incorporates three dimensions: physiological, social, and emotional well-being.
It has been argued that social media can affect users’ mental health negatively or positively. One of the highly cited benefits of social media is that the platforms offer users a high sense of privacy. With privacy guaranteed, individuals can openly discuss their woeful experiences without having too woeful experiences. In other words, social media provides a better platform for self-expression, which is not guaranteed through physical encounters. Social media also has the potential to help individuals network with others and build healthy relationships, which is crucial in reducing exposure to mental wellness. Besides connecting with individuals, social media can enable people to connect with other agencies created to deal with mental issues (Robinson & Smith, 2022). to Anxiety and Depression.
Anxiety and depression have been prevalent issues in the United States and other parts of the world since the beginning of time. Anxiety and depression, which manifest in a variety of ways, can have a negative impact on people of all ages. Despite the fact that the first person to develop an addiction has never been identified, it is a widely held belief (Freeman, 2020). It has exacted a significant toll on the younger generation in recent years, which is especially concerning given the ongoing global epidemic. Many people do not prioritize their mental health and do not believe it should be one of their primary concerns. When, in fact, one's mental health is absolutely necessary in order to complete mundane tasks like going to class or working a job. As a result of increased focus on the topic from a wide range of fields, the state of people's mental health has been elevated to the status of a critical problem in today's society. Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, a sizable minority of people continue to believe that medication is the only way to treat mental health issues, despite the fact that the vast majority of people understand the importance of mental health (Ginsburg, 2020). This essay will coherently argue the alternative solutions to anxiety and depression. In that case, getting enough sleep and maintain a stable diet are the solutions other than medication that are discussed in below paragraphs.
Despite this, a significant number of people either do not give mental health the attention it deserves or do not believe it is all that important. Some people are also responsible for contributing to the stigma associated with mental illness. A little more than half of those polled in the General Social Survey in 2020 said they would not want a member of their family or a close friend to marry, work next to, or spend the night out with someone who had a mental illness (Knowles, 2020). People who have mental health issues may be hesitant to seek help because they are afraid of the stigma that may be attached to them if they do, which is a significant issue. The findings of this 2020 survey show that many American households continue to struggle with the concept of accepting mental health issues in their loved ones.
According to a 2020 statement from Zhang, "many people believe that people with mental illnesses are aggressive and dangerous." In fact, they are more likely to be assaulted or to injure themselves than they are to cause harm to others. People suffering from mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are less likely to seek alternative treatments and are more likely to rely on excessive medication if these stereotypes are perpetuated. This study aimed to determine the excessive use of screen gadgets among teenagers in Labangon, Cebu City, Philippines and its effects on their social and emotional functioning. Nine participants, two males and seven females aged 11-19, completed a survey and interview. Thematic analysis revealed that factors like opportunities for enjoyment, accessibility for schoolwork/leisure, social support, shared interests, and lack of family interaction contributed to excessive screen use. Both positive and negative effects on social and emotional functioning were identified. Mental health problems are very worldwide among adolescent. This may be due to the truth that attending family members to a difficult time for many traditional and non traditional among adolescent. Adolescent after effecting high school are typically younger, depend on parents for financial support, and do not work or work part time. Thus, in addition to stress related to academic load, these adolescent may have to face the task of taking on more adult like responsibilities lacking having yet mastered the skills and cognitive maturity of adulthood. Stress, life events, past experiences and genetics all play a part in determining our mental health. Student life exposes individuals to risk factors affecting mental health including financial worries, periods of transition, substance use, parental pressure, culture shock and disconnection from previous supports. Descriptive research design and simple random sampling technique was adopted for the study. A sample size of 60 people was collected using planned interviews. Introduction
When discussing the influence of social media on mental health, first, it is pivotal to understand what social media is and the different dimensions of mental health. On the one hand, social media refers to how people can share information on various issues. Information can be shared in video, image, and audio, among other formats. The information shared via these platforms can benefit the users or have damaging consequences, such as mental issues and radicalization. Some popular social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Flickr. According to the Pew Research Center, over 84% of Americans will use social media in 2022, compared to 5% in 2002 (
Pew Research Center, 2022). The most used platforms in the United States are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Mental health is pivotal because it influences the decisions people make ad their participation in daily routines. Issues like trauma, abuse, child neglect, unemployment, and divorce can lead to mental health problems affecting individual functioning. Some dominant mental health issues include depression, sleeping disorders, stress, aggression, and self-denial. On the other hand, mental health incorporates three dimensions: physiological, social, and emotional well-being.
It has been argued that social media can affect users’ mental health negatively or positively. One of the highly cited benefits of social media is that the platforms offer users a high sense of privacy. With privacy guaranteed, individuals can openly discuss their woeful experiences without having too woeful experiences. In other words, social media provides a better platform for self-expression, which is not guaranteed through physical encounters. Social media also has the potential to help individuals network with others and build healthy relationships, which is crucial in reducing exposure to mental wellness. Besides connecting with individuals, social media can enable people to connect with other agencies created to deal with mental issues (Robinson & Smith, 2022). INTELLECTUAL IMPACT Reasearch performed at King's College Institute of Psychiatry reported a temporary 10 point drop in IQ of those who reported constant use of social media. Decreased productivity at work is costing the economy billions of dollars and studies show that it takes an average person 25 minutes to refocus after online distractions. POSITIVE BENEFITS Not all effects are detrimental. Social media allows people to stay in touch with friends all over the world and keeps people informed. It can ignite desire for change and demand social justice. It can also impact emotions globally, and for the better.
