creative manner of imparting
wisdom from older generations.
Solve the Following Riddles:
1. Its entrails are long and it can fly. But then
becomes lazy when no wind goes by - (Mahaba
ang bituka at ito’s lumilipad. Kapag hindi
mahangin ito ay tinatamad.)
Solve the Following Riddles:
• They have tongues but don’t have speech. Always
together, identical to each. Tie them up, bind them
even tight. They’ll still be faithful and leave you
not. (May dila nga ngunit ayaw magsalita. Kambal
sila’t laging kasama ang isa’t-isa. Itali o igapos kahit
higpitan mo pa. Tiyak silang sa iyo ay sasama.)
Solve the Following Riddles:
• It’s not heaven but has days and months. It stops but
then right away resumes. Grows older but stays always a
year in age. Its life’s end is celebrated with fun and
homage. (Mayroong araw, mayroong buwan hindi
naman langit. Mayroong katapusan ngunit muling
nagbabalik. Tumatanda ngunit isang taong gulang lagi.
Wakas nya ay ipinagbubunyi.

• It has no eyes but it can cry. It has no feet but it
can walk by. (Lumuluha walang mata. Lumalakad
walang paa.)

of clothes. (Hindi pari hindi hari. Ngunit ang damit
ay madami.)

• My cow is in Manila, you can hear its moo.(Nasa

Proverbs
pithy sayings that contain advice or state a basic
truth. Proverbs or salawikain are an important part of
our cultural heritage. They preserve our traditions,
beliefs, customs, and ways.
Folk Narratives
Folk narratives include myths and legends
that involve religion and gods of old.
Myth
a traditional story, especially one concerning
the early history of a people or explaining
some natural or social phenomenon.
Legends
A legend is a genre of folklore that consists of a
narrative featuring human actions, believed or
perceived, both by teller and listeners, to have
taken place in human history.
Fables
types of animal tales that teach a moral using
animal characters that have human personalities.
Assignment
Ask you elders for some proverbs and share
them in the class.

Speech
Figure of Speech - a word or
phrase used to express a meaning
other than the literal meaning.
1. Metaphor
• compares two
unlike things by
saying that one
thing is the other
thing. It does not
use like or as.
• The Philippines is the Pearl of
the Orient Seas.
• My sister thinks life is a game.
• Lisa believes that time is money.
• Liam has the heart of a lion.
• She’s a real firecracker.
2. Simile
• uses the words
like or as to
compare two
unlikely things.
• She swam like a fish.
• He was as quiet as a mouse.
• She is like a firecracker.
• My sister thinks life is like a
game.
• Lisa believes time is like money.
3. Personification
• giving human
attributes to
objects that are
not human.
• The trees danced in the wind.
• The stars winked in the night sky.
• The flowers begged for water.
• The camera loved her.
• The wind whispered softly in the night.
Activity:
Decide whether the figure of speech used in the
sentences is a metaphor, simile, or personification.
1. Why does the sea laugh, Mother?
2. Like an angry giant, the storm uprooted trees and
hurled the roofs of houses across the fields.
3. Bugan is the brilliant sun that warms the earth and
drives away the chill of the night.

  • 18. Identifying Figures of Speech Figure of Speech - a word or phrase used to express a meaning other than the literal meaning.
  • 19. 1. Metaphor • compares two unlike things by saying that one thing is the other thing.   • 20. 2. Simile • uses the words like or as to compare two unlikely things. • She swam like a fish. • He was as quiet as a mouse. • She is like a firecracker. • My sister thinks life is like a game. • Lisa believes time is like money.
  • 21. 3. Personification • giving human attributes to objects that are not human. • The trees danced in the wind. • The stars winked in the night sky. • The flowers begged for water. • The camera loved her. • The wind whispered softly in the night.
