2. Visual analysis
• The titles in the opening are very simple with a black
background and silver writing, the dark colour of the
background is often associated with Horror and
Supernatural films
• All throughout the clip the lighting outside and inside
of the house is very dim, this give an unnerving feeling
to the audience
• The house and the props in the house are relatively
modern, this shows that it is set in the present so it
would be more relatable and more unsettling for the
audience when a Supernatural element is introduced
3. Audio code
• In the beginning of the clip there is quite, slow
music playing whilst the titles are being shown,
this paired with the dark background created
quite a mysterious and tense atmosphere.
• When the two men are talking, one uses a very
hush and calm tone of voice. This again creates a
tense atmosphere as its obvious that he’s trying
to remain calm but he is still scared by the
situation
4. Enigma code
• The enigma codes are the factors of the film opening
that engage the audience and make them want to
continue watching.
• The first enigma code is the music, the music played
through the title sequence is tense and mysterious
which makes they audience want to continue watching
• The second is the characters, in the first five minutes of
the clip we know that someone has broken into their
house but we don’t know anything about the person or
why, so the audience will want to continue watching to
find out.
5. Narrative code
• The story line in the opening is that a couple
think they’re alone in their house but
someone with mental health issues has
broken in and it standing in the bathroom
• This shows that there is something strange
going on as its very unusual for someone to
break into another persons house, especially
is they are as mentally unstable as the man is
6. Technical code
• Through out the film opening there was a lot
of close-up shots being used. This shows the
persons reaction or focuses on a specific
aspect in the clip
• These shot types are used a lot in
supernatural films as it often highlights the
Supernatural points that occur during the clip.
