2. What is Film Distribution?
Film Distribution is the process in which films are made available to an audience.
There are a number of ways in which a distributor can distribute a film, such as:
Merchandising, advertisement and release dates. It is important for a film to be
distributed in a way, that it will reach it’s target audience, as this can dictate
how much success the film will have. Therefore, distribution plays a very
important role in the success of a film, and how effectively it reaches its
consumer. Distribution almost acts as ‘the middle man’ within the film industry,
as it has to require the materials and rights from the producer of the film, while
cooperating with the exhibitor of the film, so the film can be distributed in the
most effective way.
3. Larger Film Distributors
These figures shown, show the box office takings of the biggest film distributors
in the world from 1995-2017.
1) Walt Disney: $30,909,551,117
2) Warner Brothers: $30,433,424,944
3) Sony Pictures: $24,793,096,189
4) 20th Century Fox: $23,642,120,445
5) Universal: $23,357,028,651
6) Paramount: $22,413,460,394
These companies are incredibly successful, and they would only invest in a film
that had a larger production, and due to the fact that our film is independent, it
is highly unlikely that they would distribute our film.
4. Vertigo Films
Vertigo Films was created in 2002 by Allan Nibbo and James Richardson. In 2003,
Rupert Preston and Nick Love joined as co-founders. It was primarily made for
the production of two films, and it specializes in distributing UK made films, that
were made on a low budget; and example of this is ’Monsters’. They are trying to
combat cultural imperialism of American films that dominate cinemas. This is the
UK’s most successful film distributor.
This is an example of a low budget film distributor, that might distribute our
film.
5. Harambe Productions
Harambe Productions is the media institution that will be distributing our film,
and we created an ident, so the audience will be able to identify this particular
media institution. This is so that our low budget film would be able to be
distributed effectively, and we took inspiration from Vertigo Films
