Search for value as you focus the
coaching conversation
• Identify with the coachee what the real issue is, at a deep level; ask:
1. ‘What would you like to explore today?’
(ask coachee to prioritize, if necessary, and choose one)
2. ‘How is that important to you?’
3. ‘At a deeper level, what could it really be about?’
4. Then, ask: ‘what objective do you choose for our conversation?’
• Invite coachee to rephrase a negatively-worded objective into a positively-worded objective
• don’t want to work so late => want to be more effective
• avoid to be shy => become assertive
• Ensure the objective is focused on the person, not on the problem
• Increase motivation of my team => adjust my behaviors to become a motivating manager
• Make my boss listen to me => find how to change my way to communicate so that my boss listens to me
