The first steps involve assessing the qualities of the exisiting buildings and making a decision on whether to retain or remove
aspects of the building in order to enhance these qualities. The vast wall that surrounds 37 induktorn is an example of a quality
that should be enhanced. The removal of the extraneous buildings and the roof leaves the wall as a barrier to what is inside. A
new public space can then be inserted inside the walls, in this case taking the form of a new public greenspace.
For a block so large, through-connections are important to
improve pedestrian flow and convenience. Pedestrian and
bicycle pathways are proposed both north-south (connect-
ing the access to public transport in the north with the pro-
posed greenspace to the south) and east-west (connecting
both sides of the tram line and down to the water).
With the expected removal of Bromma Airport from the
area in the year 2038, housing regulations are expected to
change in Ulvsunda. This creates the opportunity for hous-
ing to be built at 37 induktorn, making it a truly mixed-use
development.
A new mixed-use program with a focus on sports and recreation is proposed. The addition of a public swimming pool, gymna-
sium basketball court and rock climbing centre are offset by some office and retail tenancies to the north of the site. Because
of the additive nature of the buildings in the area, the new program has been effectively ‘stuck’ on and over the existing walls,
which in turn become interior partitions in some areas, while remaining as the main building envelope in others.

INDUSTRIAL RE-USE
Ulvsunda, an industrial area in the Stockholm inner-city was to be
revitalised into a mixed-use urban precinct. The site was a large
warehouse, originally storage for a freight company.
The site called for connection to a new tram line that connects Ulvsunda
to the greater Stockholm area. The response was to develop a new sports
and recreation centre in the old warehouse, including an open park,
swimming pool, multi-purpose courts and rock-climbing centre.
The main asperations for the design were to retain the 170m long walls of
the existing warehouse to create a sense of drama and mystery as to what
lay behind.
4.
5. The proposal highlights existing elements of the site, retaining the industrial
character, while new additions, distinctly different but also homogenous are
inserted into the site. The muted palette of the new additions seeks to further
highlight the exisiting elements of the site.

URBAN TRANSPORT HUB
This was an experiment into the use of exisitng infrasrtucture to create a welcoming
and easy-to-use transport node in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. The research
develd into the percieved dislike of underground spaces and how to make them into a
more inviting and public-friendly zone.
The project also considered the mix of transport types and connection between bike,
bus, tram and train as well as an emphasis of quality public space within the urban
environment.
8. GRASSLANDS ARENAfor ZOOS VICTORIA
The grasslands arena is a specially-designed performance area for the
educational shows for the public put on by Werribee Open Range Zoo. The
breif was to expand the existing serval presentation area, better plan the
waiting area to decrease patron congestion along with a research project
on how best to manage audience participation and promotion of zoo
initiatives. The result is an immersive amphitheatre, with an Australian/
African Grassland theme.

10. SPÅRVÄG
How do you convey movement through still images?
As part of a workshop with Stiftung Freizeit from Berlin, these images were produced
to convey the concept of ‘moveable public space’. The spårvägn or tramway becomes a
strip of public space in Stockholm, connecting Solna in the north to Årsta in the south.
The program for the spårvägn is not prescribed, merely suggested as a way to enliven the
journey and emphasise the need and convenience of transport as ‘public’.

13. FLINDERS STREET STATION COMPETITION
FOR HASSELL & HERZOG DeMEURON
The winning design for the international design competition for Flinders Street Train
Station, an icon of the city of Melbourne, was a collaboration between HASSELL and
Herzog & DeMeuron. I produced the explanatory exploded anonometric for the first stage
competition panels. Through the simple use of colour and line we were able to express the
proposed changes and the functionality of the proposal.

RESTAURANT AND BAR
FOR PASCALE GOMES-McNABB
I was engaged by PGM and to create a digital
3D model for a complex pattern of steel tubes
for the fitout of the Bentley restaurant and
bar, Sydney. Through this I was able to produce
a series of visualisations and drawings for
construction/assembly.

JAMES and the GIANT PIZZA
FOR EDWARDS MOORE
A fairytale inspired rooftop pizzeria, erupting into it’s surrondings, located in a prime
location on the roof of the iconic Melbourne Central.
The front section of the container, with it’s mirroed lining, hinges open to create a
reflective backdrop, blurring interior and exterior space. The cave-like space of the
interior is part functional kitchen, part customer seating, enhancing the spectacle of the
pizza-making process.
Pizza is ordered remotely, via translucent wireless LED balloons above each table, that
change colour according to the status of the order.
17. EX-LAB
The Experimental Design Lab, or the Ex-Lab, is a design and research collective that promotes creative
utilisations of computation in art, architecture, engineering and related design disciplines. Based
in Melbourne, Australia, the collective organises experimental collaborative research projects and
exploratory workshops that focus on learning through making with digital fabrication at its core.
18. TECTONIC REEF
The Tectonic Reef, an installation built on the beach
during the St Kilda Festival 2011 was the result of the
first initiative of the Ex-Lab. The workshop culminated in
the design, fabrication and construction of a piece that
explored the potential of advanced digital techniques by
allowing the final form of the installation to be defined
by participants at the festival by following a simple set of
rules, much like the growth of a simple organism.
20. SCULPTOR’S STUDIO
Located in the Abbotsford convent, overlooking the River Yarra,
the studio was designed to engage the creative spirit of the
public, whilst housing a resident artist. The resulting design is
a culmination of the free-flowing waters of the yarra and the
rigidity of the convent. Containing two studio spaces (one public
and one private) a gallery and an office, the building delivers an
environment in which the public can interact with the artist.

21. URBAN OFFICE and RESTAURANT
Located in an up-and-coming area of Melbourne, the administration building
of the balloon company contains weather stations, a reference library, public
greenspaces and a rooftop bar. The building is situated on the corner of two
main streets and the atrium space acts as a laneway through the building, from
one street to the other.
