INTRODUCTION TO SITE
Our proposed site is located at Taman Damai
Utama, Puchong. It is an empty, undeveloped land
approximately 50 m x 50m in size. The site is quite near
to some residential houses and surrounded by trees. The
whole area is rather quiet as it is partially and newly
developed, with many new developments on the way.
There are still many land that is undeveloped around
our proposed site so that makes it quite secluded from
public.

SITE ANALYSIS
POTENTIAL
This site has potential for many types of
developments because it has a flat topography and
ample space. It is located near some residential areas
which can bring benefits to the residents nearby if
developed properly. It is located right in front of the
main road, which makes it highly accessible.
CONSTRAINT
There are many undeveloped land around the
site, which makes the area full of mosquitos. The
surrounding provides no shade to the site from
sunlight during the afternoon, which results in the
site being very hot during that time. There are no
parking space available near the site, which poses a
problem for people who want to park there.

MICROCLIMATE
The sun rises from the east to the west of the site, and the
wind blows from south west of the site.

The site is relatively flat. There are no slopes present.

The site can only be accessed through one main
road, that is Jalan Persiaran Damai Utama 2. This road
is a two way road, meaning people can access it from
both the south or north point of the site.
TRAFFIC
Traffic is relatively light near the site all day as there
are not much developed land around it. The only traffic
comes from residents that live at the residential houses
near the site.

SUGGESTION
Looking at the fact that the proposed site has so much
potential in it, many different types of developments
can be done. My suggestion would be a development
that is practical and can be beneficial the community
around the site, especially the residents living nearby,
while trying not to bring too much negative impact to
them at the same time.
PROPOSAL
I propose to have the land developed into an outdoor
recreational park with a double story gymnasium built
on site as well. There will be a man-made lake located
in the middle of the park, surrounded by trees and a
jogging track. The gym will be built on top of the lake.
There will be four gazebos around the jogging track,
where a good view of the lake can be seen. At each
corner of the site will be where different elements of a
playground are located.

The surface of the playground areas will be covered
with coloured rubber granules to reduce risk of injury
for children playing there, while the jogging track will
be covered with cobblestone pavement. The rest of the
site will be covered by turf. The park itself will be
surrounded by trees and fencing. The gazebos will be
made of wood.
As for the double story gymnasium, I plan to have the
first floor filled with gym equipment, and a swimming
pool located at the second floor. The first floor will
have huge windows so that people can enjoy the view
of the lake while working out. It will be divided into 3
sections, which is a free weight area, cardio area and
stretching area. Locker rooms and shower rooms will be
located on the second floor beside the pool. The gym
can be accessed through stepping stones.

RATIONALE
A recreational park is proposed as a practical
response to the absence of recreational areas around the
site. The whole area is still new but developing rapidly.
Soon there will be many buildings in that area and a
green space is needed to balance out the concrete
jungle. It also addresses to the issue of residents nearby
having no place to relax or have some outdoor time. It
was observed that the residents often jog on the streets
due to the lack of a suitable area to jog, which is highly
dangerous to both them and the drivers on the street, as
an accident might occur. The proposed park will be the
area that provides a place for the residents to jog.
People nowadays do not have a bond with nature and
lack in awareness for the environment. The recreational
park can increase their time spent with the natural
surroundings. Not only that, the issue of obesity is
arising nowadays. The gymnasium and park can
become an answer to the problem by making exercising
fun and encouraging more people to do it in their will.

BENEFITS
The proposed recreational park will be beneficial to
the community around it in the sense that it can keep
the residents off the streets, reducing the rate of car
accidents occurring. It gives children a good place to go
to when they are free, and can reduce the number of
children wasting time in cyber cafes or shopping malls
doing activities that are not beneficial. It can help
residents nearby to socialize and form a good bond with
other residents who come by the park often, increasing
awareness in as a community.
The recreational park brings the community closer
to nature and can instil a sense of love for the
environment in them. The proposed gymnasium can
promote a healthy lifestyle to the surrounding
community and encourage people to do exercises and
keep fit, boosting their confidence in life. The park can
also be a great stress reliever for people who enjoy the
serene environment while relaxing at the gazebo by the
lake.

IMPACTS
Having a recreational area will influence the traffic
around the site as many people will be walking or
driving towards the park or gym, slowing down the
traffic and making it more congested. There might a
problem in finding parking space as well, as there are
no parking sports around the site. This can result in the
many cars parking on the streets near the park,
disrupting traffic flow.
The park can also result in sound pollution. The
sound of children playing noisily can affect the lives of
residents living nearby. Their screams, laughter and
chattercan disturb the peace of the residents, increasing
their levels of stress and affecting sleep. It will interfere
with their daily activities such as studying.
Kids may also use the recreational park as an area
to play truant when they do not feel like going to
school. This will affect their academic achievements
and make their parents worried. It can affect the child’s
future in the long run.

TASKS OF PROFESSIONALS
LAND SURVEYOR
The land surveyor is a government authorized specialist. Before
construction, they will determine our site’s boundary and establish beacon
on site to define it. The information will be represented in the cadastral
survey, which will be stamped and registered at the surveyor general’s
office. They will also establish a level for our proposed development as
well as a benchmark which will be used as a reference point throughout
the construction phase.
CONSTRUCTION CONSULTANT
The construction consultant will bring together all the different
professionals to be involved in the project, giving advice to the client as
well as being their representative. They identify the potential construction
problems before construction and suggest alternatives to the client while
evaluating the proposals of other professionals. They deal with the other
professionals on the client’s behalf, solving problems for the clients.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER
The geotechnical engineer has to investigate our site before construction to
determine the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the soil on
site that may influence our project flow. They make sure that there are no
natural hazards that will happen on site such as landslides. After
evaluation, earthwork, foundation and pavement design is carried out for
the park.

BUILDING CONTROL SURVEYOR
The building control surveyor ensures that regulations are followed in the
design and construction stage of our project. Building control surveyors
check the proposed plans before construction to ensure that they meet the
required standards, including areas such as fire safety and structural
stability of the gymnasium and park. They also follow the progress of
construction.
ARCHITECT
The architect has the responsibility of designing the gymnasium structure.
They have to come up with conceptual drawings to be proposed to the
client. After it is approved, the architect will come up with detailed
construction plans. It is their duty to make sure that the design of the
gymnasium structure is aesthetically pleasing, functional, economical and
safe. During construction, the visit the site often to make sure that the
contractor follows the design and makes revisions to the design when
needed.
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
The landscape architect designs the landscape of the park. Before
construction, they have to investigate the site and come up with a site
analysis and site inventory. After that, they will produce conceptual
drawings to the client. Once approved, they will produce detailed
construction plans as well. They have to take in consideration the
accessibility of the park design as well as the environmental aspects. They
also order the playground elements from suppliers. After construction,
they provide consultation on vegetation maintenance to the client.

INTERIOR ARCHITECT
The interior architect designs the interior space of the gymnasium. They
determine the materials used as well as the lighting and colours of the
space. Before construction, they will visit the constructed gymnasium to
measure the dimensions. After that, they will come up with conceptual
drawings which will later be improvised into construction plans after the
client’s approval. They have to ensure that the design makes full use of the
space’s potential.
STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
The structural engineer has to make sure that the gymnasium will not
collapse into the man-made lake when loaded with equipment and people.
After the architectural design is completed, it is their duty to design the
structural members and calculate the amount of reinforcements needed
according to the architectural design. They also design the roof trusses to
sustain all expected loads and forces. They will produce the structural
drawings accordingly.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
The electrical engineer produces electrical drawings according to the
architect’s design of the gymnasium. The electrical drawings contain
information about power, lighting and communication. During
construction, the electrical engineer visits the site often to make sure that
the electrician is follows the electrical drawings. After construction, they
are called back for maintenance consultation on the electrical system of the
gymnasium if needed.

QUANTITY SURVEYOR
Before construction, the quantity surveyor calculates a budget based on the
client’s requirement. They then help in feasibility studies and plan costs to
help design team stay within budget using practical solutions. After all the
technical drawings and construction plans are produced, they will produce
a cash flow data so that the client can arrange the finances needed at each
stage. They will also produce the Bill of Quantities to have contractor
tenders measured against. During construction, they make sure that the
contractors to not go over the budget. After construction, they produce a
statement of final account for the client.
CONTRACTOR
Before construction, the project manager draws up a plan to carry out the
construction project. They then hire the labour and professionals required.
They are responsible for supervising, firing and paying the workers while
obtaining materials for the project. They need to acquire all necessary
licenses and permits before construction begins. During construction, they
make sure that the project is completed within the given timeframe and
follow the budget as closely as possible. They also deal with emergencies
that occur on site.
SITE SUPERVISOR
The site supervisor will be on site throughout the entire project, managing
the workers hired by the contractor. They do not have ultimate control of
the project like the contractor but they are responsible for making sure that
the workers are doing their job properly and on time. They have to ensure
that a safe and legal work environment is maintained to prevent accidents
or injuries from happening to workers.

ARTISAN
Artisans, although not professionals, are the real workmen on site during
the construction phase. They are mostly technicians that carry out their
duties based on instructions given by the professionals. There are various
artisans with different duties, here are the few examples:
The MASON is in charge of mixing mortar and laying bricks for the walls
of the gymnasium as well as doing the paving for the jogging track. They
also make the cement stepping stones on the lake that lead to the
gymnasium as well as plastering the ceiling of the gymnasium.
The CARPENTER builds, installs and repairs structure made of wood,
steel or glass. They build the stairs for the gymnasium and erect
scaffolding during construction. They install the partitions, doors and
windows for the gymnasium. After construction, they may be called on to
repair broken structures in the gymnasium.
The PLUMBER installs pipes, fixtures and other plumbing used for water
distribution in the gymnasium according to the technical drawings
provided. They determine the layout of plumbing systems, water supply
networks and waste and drainage systems first before installing the
structures accordingly.
