2. This is Harry, who is a prime example of my target audience
He is male
To quote the guardian “ if you saw the industry panels at music conferences in the past
year, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the people working behind the scenes are all
white men. ” (http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2009/jul/23/behind-music-
female-a-rs)
Due to the high concentration of men in the music industry, and many bands my magazine
cover are male because of this, a male like harry would be able to identify with them
more, and as such my magazine would appeal to him more
He is between 17-25
This age range is due to the free time needed to attend gigs and festivals, and the “student
culture” of live music my magazine covers. 25 is the upper bound as that is around the age
people may start a family and therefor have less free time or sdisposable income
3. He has a deeper interest in music
Not simply a passive listener to music, Harry has been
learning to play at least one musical instrument for a
while, and has the experience and knowledge to
understand some of the more technical articles in the
magazine. Although experience in playing music is not
needed to enjoy OPEN MIC, the interests that draw an
audience member to my magazine have probably
already drawn them to an instrument as well
4. He knows his tech
A sizable portion of my magazine is focused on
reviewing and discussing the latest live music
technology and equipment. To enjoy these
sections, Harry has probably had an interest in
music technology for a while, perhaps even taking
it at GCSE or A-Level, and may have found this
magazine while browsing online for guides or
discussions on some obscure piece of tech
5. He has disposable income
Another reason for the age choice, Harry has
obviously got to be able to afford to buy OPEN
MIC regularly, and like most people this age, may
have a part time job from which he gets the
disposable income to do so. Without any real
responsibilities as all his base needs are taken
care of by his guardians, Harry is free to spend his
money on self actualisation purposes, such as
music magazine
6. He goes to festivals and gigs
Another knock on from disposable income, an interest
in gigs and festivals, being the main steer of the
magazine is a must. If he did not regularly attend gigs
or festivals, I doubt he would have enough interest to
buy my magazine.
7. To conclude, my ideal audience is…
• Male
• 17-25
• Played/ taken a deeper interest in music
• Have an interest in music technology
• Have disposable income
• Have free time to attend gigs and such
