2. Documentary
A documentary film is a very non-fictional film
of a real life event or subject etc…
Documentaries are used to tell the story of
what happened. Documentaries can be viewed
on a variety of different viewing platforms such
as television, websites (4oD) and often they will
be brought out on DVD. Depending on what the
documentary is about, both single and multi
camera techniques are used. Usually in larger
budget documentaries single camera
techniques are used this is because it is more
expensive and time consuming and can be very
tedious. If a documentary is filmed using multi
camera techniques this means it has been
filmed with more than one camera this is used
in lower budget documentaries as it is a
cheaper process as a larger variety of footage
can be captured at one time. An example of a
documentary is ‘love Marilyn’ which is about
her recently discovered personal journals and
letters.
3. Series
A TV series is a number of episodes of a TV show. A TV series
can contain around 8-30 episodes depending on the show
itself. Normally the more popular TV shows have more than
one series as they have a greater audience that like to follow
the stories of the characters within the show. Both single
camera techniques and multi camera techniques are used
within TV series it just depends on the type of show and the
budget of the show. For example soaps such as Emmerdale
and Coronation street will use multi camera techniques as it
is a lot cheaper and quicker as more footage is shot a once.
This also makes editing a lot faster which is useful when
having a busy time schedule like these shows.
There are a lot of different genres of television series such as
crime which includes shows such as criminal minds and
person of interest. Then there are adult cartoon series such
as Southpark and Family guy.
As well as a series there is also a serial which is a single series
that usually consists of about 3-6 episodes and is not
continued on by a following series. This is most popular in
small crime dramas such as ‘the Guilty’.
A TV series can be view on a variety of platforms they are
usually found on TV first and then later on stream on
websites such as 4od and Netflix. A lot of the series then get
turned into a DVD and then box sets.
4. Single Drama
A single drama is a special part drama and
normally only lasts for a few episodes and does
not continue on into another series. They are
usually a ‘one off drama’. The drama ‘Murder’ is
an example of a single drama which won best
single drama in 2013. This drama looks as if it
would have had a high budget and therefore I
expect that the majority of it was filmed using
single techniques. This has allowed the directors
to be very precise and creative with the lighting
and shots as they wouldn’t have had a tight time
schedule like the soaps. A single drama like a
drama series can be viewed on a variety of
different publishing platforms. Firstly they will be
released onto the television and then will go on
to be aired on websites and DVD.
5. Soap Opera
The most popular things view on television are
soap operas. Soap operas are fictional and
scripted and are written for entertainment
purposes. The characters and events are
influenced by things that can happen in everyday
life. This makes soap operas appealing to the
audience that follow the soap as they want to
follow the storylines of the characters that they
can relate too or find interesting. Normally soap
operas are filmed using multi camera techniques
as they have a tight schedule to stick too as they
are aired around 2-4 times a week. They also use
multi camera techniques as they speed up editing
and filming time by using more than one camera
filming at one time which helps keeps cost down.
Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Coronation street are
examples of soap operas. Soap operas are
normally viewed on the television however can be
viewed on catch-up television and websites such
as itv player and Netflix.
6. Feature Film
Feature films usually last between 70
minutes and 210 minutes and are
normally a full length production.
Children’s feature films are usually
between 70 and 105 minutes long.
There's a variety of different genres of
feature film such as:
horror, action, comedy etc.. An example
of a feature film is Scooby doo the movie
which is a film based on the children's
cartoon television series Scooby doo.
Feature films are usually shot using single
camera techniques as they are high
budget productions and do not work to a
tight time schedule unlike soap operas.
Films used to be only able to view in the
cinema however now they are available
on film channels, dvd and websites such
as Netflix and lovefilm.
7. Music video
Music videos are very common with popular artists. They are
created to give the audience something to watch when listening
to the song on a viewing platform e.g. television. There are
different kinds of music videos such as narrative, performance
and a combination. A narrative music video is when the video
tells a story usually the story goes along with the lyrics e.g. the
video for ‘Wheetus – teenage dirt bag’ the video reflects the
songs lyrics. A performance video is when the band or artist is
videoed performing throughout e.g. this is used in the video for
‘Greenday – American Idiot’. A combination is when a
combination of both a narrative and a performance is used.
Music videos can be filmed using both single and multi camera
techniques depending on the type of video it is. Narrative music
videos like ‘teenage dirtbag’ are usually filmed using a single
camera this allows the director of the video to be more precise
with the shots and allows them to film in different locations
easily. Multi camera techniques are usually used when filming
performance music videos such as ‘American idiot’ this is so
they can get various different angles and shots and this also
makes the clips quick and easy to edit. Music videos can be
viewed on a variety of different viewing platforms such as
televison and music websites such as youtube.
