2. Interview
• The word interview is originated from Latin and French words
which meant “see each other”. Generally, an interview means a
meeting between individuals when conversation is kind of
integrative in which questions are asked and answered.
• The person who asks the questions in an interview is called an
interviewer.
• The person who answers the questions in an interview is called
an interviewee.

• Generally, interviews are conducted to hire someone for some
kind of job an any organization.
• But there are so many instances where interviews are used.

4. • According to Gary Dessler,
“An interview is a procedure designed to obtain information from
a person’s oral response to oral inquiries.”
• According to Thill and Bovee,
“An interview is any planed conversation with a specific purpose
involving two or more people”.
• As interview has many occasions to be used in people have
described this term in different ways:

• According to Meriam Webster,
“An interview is a conversation where questions are asked and
answers are given. In common parlance, the word "interview"
refers to a one-on-one conversation between an interviewer and
an interviewee. ”.
5. Objectives of Interview

• In the selection process, interview serves the following
objectives:
i. Verifies the information obtained through application form and
tests.
ii. Helps obtain additional information from the applicant otherwise
not available.
iii. Gives the candidate necessary facts and information about the
job and the organisation.
iv. Helps establish mutual understanding between the company and
the candidate and build the company`s image

• There are many types of interviews that an organization can
conduct.
• It depends on the objectives of taking the interview.
• Some important types of interviews are stated below:
1) Personal Interviews
2) Evaluative Interviews
3) Persuasive Interviews
4) Structured Interviews
5) Unstructured Interviews (informal)
6) Counseling Interviews
7) Public Interviews
8) Conversational Interviews ( semi-informal)
9) Open-Ended Interviews
10)Close-Ended Interviews etc.
7. Personal Interviews

• Personal Interview is the widely used election method. It is a
face-to-face interaction between interviewee and interviewer.
• If handled carefully, it can be a powerful technique in having
accurate information of the interviewee otherwise unavailable.
• At the same time, if the interview is not handled carefully, it can
be a source of bias, restricting or distorting the flow of
communication.
• Personal Interviews include the following:
i. Selection of the employees
ii. Promotion of the employees
iii. Retirement and resignation of the employees.
8. Evaluative Interviews

• The interviews which take place annually to review the progress
of the interviewee are called the evaluation interviews.
• Naturally, it is occurring between superiors and subordinates.
• The main objective of this interview is to find out the strengths
and weaknesses of the employees.
Persuasive Interviews
• This type of interview is designed to sell someone a product or
an idea.
• When a sales representative talks with a target buyer, persuasion
takes the form of convincing the target that the product or idea
meets a need.
9. Structured Interviews

• Structured interviews are such interviews which follow a pre
designed agenda of questions.
• These are research oriented and conducted when a large number
of individuals are to be interviewed.
• Structured interviews are highly formal.

Unstructured Interviews
• Unstructured interviews do not require a special pre-designed
agenda of question flow. Rather it flows spontaneously.
• The interviewer may ask anything without following the agenda
of questions.
• In such interviews discussions are used and these discussions can
be rapidly shift from one topic to another.
• The main objective of unstructured interview is to get most of
the information (interviewee`s perspective) possible.
• Unstructured interviews are informal.

• Unstructured interviews do not require a special pre-designed

12. Counseling Interviews

• This type of interviews are held to find out the issues and
difficulties amongst the workers and why someone has not
been working.
Public Interviews
• Public interviews may be called as social-interviews the
interviews in which directly or indirectly public is involved.
• These include political parties’ radio-television and newspaper.
13. Conversational Interviews

• Conversational interviews are most likely unstructured
interviews.
• These interviews include conversations on specific topic.
• These interviews are semi-informal. (Questions are pre-
determined)
• The objective is to get more information in a lighter mood.
• Television shows, Radio interviews are some of it`s examples.
14. Open-Ended Interviews

• Open ended interviews are structured.
• In these interviews same open-ended questions are asked to all
interviewees.
• This approach facilitates faster interviews faster interviews
that can be more easily analysed and compared.
• These interviews are highly formal.
15. Close-Ended Interviews

• In closed interview all interviewers ask the same questions
• Interviewees are asked to choose answers from among the
same set of alternatives.
• This format is useful for those not practiced in interviewing.
• This is an objective approach.
• Mostly conduced non-verbally.
• It is mostly used for research purposes when ample data is
required.
