2. Definitions ?
Language is system of arbitrary, vocal symbols that permit all
people in a given culture, or other people who have learned the
system of that culture, to communicate or to interact
(Finocchioro, in Ramelan 1984)
Psychology is the scientific study of the activities of the
individual in relation to his environment” (Woodworth &
Marquis)
Linguistics is the science of language and thus is usually defined
as the systematic study of language or, a discipline that describes
all aspects of language and formulate theories as to how language
works. (Yang, 2005)
3. Origin of term
The term psycholinguistics was introduced by
American psychologist Jacob Robert Kantor in his
book An Objective Psychology of Grammar (1936).
The term was popularized by one of Kantor's
students, Henry Pronko, in the article "Language
and Psycholinguistics: A Review" (1946).
The term ‘psycholinguistics’ is a combination of
psychology and linguistics.
4. PSycholinguistics
“It is the study of the mental mechanisms that make it possible for
people to use language. It is a scientific discipline whose goal is a
coherent theory of the way in which language is produced and
understood." (Alan Garnham, Psycholinguistics: Central Topics.
Psychology Press, 1985)
“It investigates the interrelation of language and mind in processing
and producing utterances and in language acquisition”. (Hartley,
1982)
5. “It deals directly with the processes of encoding and decoding as
they relate states of message to states of communicators”
(Osgood and Sebeok, 1983)
“It is the study of language acquisition and linguistic behavior, as
well as the psychological mechanism responsible for them”
(Langaker, 1973)
“It is the study of relation between our needs for expression and
communication and the means offered to us by a language
learned in one’s childhood and later.” (Fraisse, 1973)
6. Psycholinguistics or Linguistics of Psychology
is the study of the psychological and neurological
factors that enable humans to acquire, use and
understand language.
7. Psycholinguistics Analyses the processes of Codification,
the process of standardizing and developing a norm for a
