2. What is Language ?
 A language is system of arbitrary, vocal symbols that permit all people in a given
culture, or other people who have learned the system of that culture, to
communicate or to interact (Finocchioro, in Ramelan 1984)
 A language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human communication
(Wardhaugh, in Ramelan, 1984)
 A language is arbitrary system of articulated sounds made use of by a group of
humans as a means of carrying on the affairs of their society (Francis, in
Ramelan, 1984)
 A language is a set of rules enabling speakers to translate information from the
outside world into sound (Gumperz, 1972).

3. What is Philosophy ?
 Philosophy, derived from the Greek ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom), is
literally defined as “the love of wisdom.” More broadly understood, it is the study
of the most basic and profound matters of human existence. Philosophy is a way
of thinking about certain subjects such as ethics, thought, existence, time,
meaning and value.

4. WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUANGE?
 Philosophy of language is the reasoned inquiry into the nature, origins, and
usage of language.
 Philosophy of language inquire into the nature of meaning, and seek to
explain what it means to "mean" something.
 Philosophy of language defined as to understand what speakers and
listeners do with language in communication, and how it is used socially.
 Philosophy of language defined as to know how language relates to the
minds of both the speaker and the interpreter.
 Philosophy of language is the investigation how language and meaning
relate to truth and the world.
