Balloon Inside a Bottle
Experiment
Objectives:
 Explain how air pressure works.
 To make the balloon inflate inside the water bottle.
Materials Needed:
 2 Plastic Bottles (2 litres in size, clean and dry)
 Balloons
 Scissors, thumbtacks, or nail (for the hole)
Procedure:
1. Make a hole in one of the bottle (for comparing).
2. Select two volunteers to try out the experiment.
3. Give each volunteer a balloon to place inside
the neck of the bottle, stretching the open end
of the balloon over the mouth of the bottle to seal it.
4. On the count of three, challenge the volunteers
to blow up their balloons.
Conclusion:
- The balloon won’t inflate much the first time because
the bottle is already filled with air. There is no room
for the balloon to expand inside the bottle. However
when you punch a hole in the bottle, the air molecules
in the bottle have an exit.
Questions:
1. How did the balloon stay “blown – up” inside the
bottle?
2. What will happen if you use the hole to inhale the
air inside the bottle?
3. If there is no hole, will the balloon inflate or not?
Why?
