ITS Education: A dedicated
platform?

2. ITS Education and research biopic
University of Leeds education ethos: Research led
learning
• ITS and Sustainability (carbon accounting for ITS, resilience,
demand management, social aspects)
• Evaluation of ITS, consequential analysis, wider impacts,
equity
• ‘Big data’ in Transport (UGC, harvesting social media for
improved transport policy and user benefits, incentives,
governance).

3. ITS Education Platform: General comments
• Role for ITS students (e.g.
information exchange,
‘community’, ‘buddying’ etc?)
• Encouraging education
excellence - IRF ITS annual
student competition/prize (e.g.
applied paper?)
• Links with continuing
professional development
(training)?
4. ITS Education survey - observations
• Response level – IRF membership/networks span 5
continents and 70+ countries, do views vary significantly by
location?
• Respondent Diversity – academics are in the minority –
any differences amongst potential ‘suppliers’ of education
and ‘consumers’
• Fund raising – is fund raising for student scholarships,
travel grants, doctoral training networks viewed in the same
light as research funds? (differences by location?)
• Widely accepted mission statement – how is the quality
of ITS education defined (depth, relevance, breadth)?
5. ITS Education survey - observations
Links with industry - IRF strengths in industry contacts –
also important for student projects, access to data etc?
Curriculum development – challenges of rapidly evolving
state of art and technology advances
Linking with industry to fix match with labour market –
student employability now high on agenda
Platform funding – questions remain on how to support the
platform
