NUS-ISS Learning Day 2018- Training for the Smart Nation
- 2. What is a Smart Nation?
Tengah, Singapore’s 24th HDB town, will
be transformed into a “Forest Town” that
is green, sustainable and smart.

The Smart Nation is Data Driven
The ranking… is said to help show
how technologies such as
connected sensors, meters and
lights which collect and analyse data
are able to improve public
infrastructure and services, and in
turn, to change the way citizens live,
work and get around the cities in
which they reside.

Smart Transportation
Cellular data was used to track the
number of people on MRT station
platforms and the flow of commuters
at interchanges……
……to minimise waiting times during
peak hours, or determine the direction
of escalators to facilitate the
movement of commuters
Smart Retail
A retail mall used M1’s analytics services to find the time of the
day when human traffic is high, and which entrances, exits or
foot paths most visitors use..…
…...to allow mall owners to derive differentiated rental rates,
best tenant mix and optimise maintenance & cleaning
Smart Health
Millions of medical transactions were sieved to flag spikes in
cases of chronic condition such as diabetes
...….in one company 70% of claims were from 10% of
employees who suffered from chronic diseases.
After designing a chronic disease management programme for
the company, the number of claims dropped by 60%

- 4. Data Analytics ‐ Making Sense of Data
• Descriptive Analytics
• What is happening and why?
• See/find patterns, trends & insights
• Data Visualisation, Data Dashboards, etc.
• Predictive Analytics
• What will happen?
• Use data to build models to predict the future
• Statistical Modelling and Machine Learning
• Prescriptive Analytics
• How to improve, what action to take?
• Cut costs, reduce waste, maximise utility
• Optimisation methods, what‐if modelling, etc.

Advanced Data Visualisation
A Marey chart is commonly used to analyze transportation systems.
It displays the times that a vehicle stops at stations on its route. https://blog.data.gov.sg/how‐we‐caught‐the‐circle‐line‐rogue‐train‐with‐data
“It looked fairly random, but when we zoomed into
the chart a pattern seemed to surface”

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is marked by emerging technology
breakthroughs in a number of fields, including robotics, artificial
intelligence, nanotechnology, quantum computing, biotechnology, the
Internet of Things , 3D printing and autonomous vehicles (Wikipedia)

- 9. Example Applications
https://youtu.be/zAdjjFCMX8Y
With Singapore's emergency dispatch
phone operators receiving almost 200,000
calls for assistance a year, every minute is
vital.
To develop the system, researchers
collected over 1,000 hours of combined
recordings of English and Mandarin
speech from Singapore and Penang ‐
where languages are mixed in speech like
in Singapore ‐ and recordings of
Singaporeans from radio stations, YouTube
and SoundCloud.
The recordings are manually transcribed
to text. The system then "learns" the
association between the text and
collected samples. It knows about 40,000
words each in English and Mandarin, and
has an accuracy rate of about 90 per cent.
AI Singapore (AISG), a programme under the
National Research Foundation, is investing
$1.25 million to set up the AI Speech Lab

Example Applications
Mr Koo said the H3 Zoom.AI team is working hard to develop more features
by the end of this year. With machine learning, the more buildings the
drones scan, the greater the data base of defects it can detect.
The system, which has cameras that upload
thousands of images onto a cloud platform to be
scanned, has already been tested at several JTC
properties such as the 31‐storey, 128m‐tall JTC
Summit, and could be making the rounds at JTC
industrial parks next year.
