Traditionally, urban mobility has been about moving people from
one location to another location within or between urban areas.
u  People needed to move in order to
access jobs, housing and urban services
such as education and entertainment
u  People preferred motorized mobility to
non-motorized mobility, because the
former is economically more efficient
than the latter, especially as cities grow
and the society becomes more affluent.
u  Urban mobility is no longer just about
moving people around by motorized

Traffic Gridlock Is Increasing Commute Time And Lowering
Productivity
City and traffic management authorities have implemented numerous projects like road
widening, flyovers, bus rapid transit systems, monorails and metro to improve traffic
congestion and quality of life for citizens. However, these measures have seen varied levels of
success but have not been sustainable over time
Drivers in New York City spent 91 hours in traffic in 2016. It
is estimated that traffic congestion cost American drivers
nearly $300Bn last year, averaging out to about $1,400 per
driver
Drivers spend an average of 32 hours a year stuck in jams
during peak periods in the UK, with the direct and indirect
costs of hold-ups reaching £31 billion last year, an average
of £968 per driver

phased traffic lights, implemented congestion charging and smart
parking
ü  Barcelona has made extensive use of sensors to help monitor and
manage traffic. City planners are planning to remodel the flow of
vehicles to reduce congestion
ü  London has made big investments in smart traffic technology
ü  Traffic lights in London respond in favor of buses to smooth the
progression of public transport
ü  City is leveraging sensors to monitor parking spaces. San
Francisco city officials use the data for dynamic parking system
that adjusts the cost of parking based on whether spots are
occupied or are vacant
ü  Oslo has started rolling out smart LED lighting and has launched a
broad sensing network for monitoring traffic levels and parking
spaces

(DoT) launched the Smart City Challenge

Traditionally, urban mobility has been about moving people from one location to another location within or between urban areas. u  People needed to move in order to access jobs, housing and urban services such as education and entertainment u  People preferred motorized mobility to non-motorized mobility, because the former is economically more efficient than the latter, especially as cities grow and the society becomes more affluent. u  Urban mobility is no longer just about moving people around by motorized vehicles u  What people really need is the accessibility to various urban services u  There is a need to build and deploy safe & sustainable transportation solutions “ Yesterday” “Today” Source: World Bank Transporta4on for Development blog, 2015

  • 6. © 2017 Bambucluster. 6 Traffic Gridlock Is Increasing Commute Time And Lowering Productivity City and traffic management authorities have implemented numerous projects like road widening, flyovers, bus rapid transit systems, monorails and metro to improve traffic congestion and quality of life for citizens. However, these measures have seen varied levels of success but have not been sustainable over time Drivers in New York City spent 91 hours in traffic in 2016. It is estimated that traffic congestion cost American drivers nearly $300Bn last year, averaging out to about $1,400 per driver Drivers spend an average of 32 hours a year stuck in jams during peak periods in the UK, with the direct and indirect costs of hold-ups reaching £31 billion last year, an average of £968 per driver What is Smart Mobility and why do we need it? City planners are planning to remodel the flow of vehicles to reduce congestion ü  London has made big investments in smart traffic technology ü  Traffic lights in London respond in favor of buses to smooth the progression of public transport ü  City is leveraging sensors to monitor parking spaces. In December 2015, the US Department of Transportation (DoT) launched the Smart City Challenge 8 •  The DoT asked mid-sized cities across the U.S. to develop ideas for an integrated, first-of-its- kind smart transportation system that would use data, applications, and technology to help people and goods move more quickly, cheaply, and efficiently •  The DoT received 78 responses from cities across the U.S. and shortlisted 7 finalists: Austin, Columbus, Denver, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Francisco •  In early 2017, Columbus, Ohio was chosen the winner What is Smart Mobility and why do we need it?

Each Zipcar replaces 15 private cars on the road, and every Zipcar driver drives 80 percent less than if they used their own cars” “Uber has enabled people to enjoy mobility without owning a private vehicle” “Chariot is the anti-Uber model. At the end of the day, a commuter wants to get to work quickly, reliably and affordably.
