Case Study Description
• Legislation: All Swedish State Authorities should
  implement an environmental management
  system
• That includes that all authorities should have staff
  of trained competent environmental auditors to
  carry out internal environmental audits
• Who could do this?
• The University of Gothenburg has trained its own
  staff since 2004.
• We could do it!

Key Outcomes
• The University of Gothenburg was assigned by the Swedish EPA to
  perform training for authority staff.
• The University set up a training during three days for internal
  environmental auditors
   – First day: ISO 14001 and Swedish legislation about EMS, basics about
     environmental aspects, target-setting, follow-ups and the role of
     environmental auditors
   – Second day: European and Swedish Environmental Legislation.
     Applications on actual activities at departments. How to interpreting
     legislation texts. How to know how to comply to the law.
   – Third day: Environmental Audit Exercise at different departments at
     the University or at the EPA in Stockholm. How to write a report. How
     to conduct a closing meeting with department officials.
• Several hundreds of internal environmental auditors has been
  trained by the University of Gothenburg.

Next Steps
• We teach and we learn a lot! We make new friends!
• Today we exchange the service of internal
  environmental auditors with other stakeholders, for
  example The Opera in Gothenburg.
• This autumn we might train and further exchange
  internal auditors with The Police Authority.

• Could we do better? Other parts that should be
  involved in the training?
• How travel from environment to sustainability in this
  issue?

Case Study Description • Legislation: All Swedish State Authorities should implement an environmental management system • That includes that all authorities should have staff of trained competent environmental auditors to carry out internal environmental audits • Who could do this? • The University of Gothenburg has trained its own staff since 2004. • We could do it! 2012 Symposium | Power of Partnership

Key Outcomes • The University of Gothenburg was assigned by the Swedish EPA to perform training for authority staff. • The University set up a training during three days for internal environmental auditors – First day: ISO 14001 and Swedish legislation about EMS, basics about environmental aspects, target-setting, follow-ups and the role of environmental auditors – Second day: European and Swedish Environmental Legislation. Applications on actual activities at departments. How to interpreting legislation texts. How to know how to comply to the law. – Third day: Environmental Audit Exercise at different departments at the University or at the EPA in Stockholm. How to write a report. How to conduct a closing meeting with department officials. • Several hundreds of internal environmental auditors has been trained by the University of Gothenburg. 2012 Symposium | Power of Partnership
  • 6. Next Steps • We teach and we learn a lot! We make new friends! • Today we exchange the service of internal environmental auditors with other stakeholders, for example The Opera in Gothenburg. • This autumn we might train and further exchange internal auditors with The Police Authority. • Could we do better?
